Just wondering if the crop works for this photo?
-
A player just after he dropped the ball. My only question is -> does the crop of the shot work?
-
Nice composition, great shot. I like it.
IMHO If you are able to use a flash at the game I would experiment using a flash to enable the players face to been seen more clearly - but you would have to check the photography policies first. Just a thought.
-
Great angle that allows capturing the players faces and good DOF. Well done, I know from personal experience just how hard is it to shoot under stadium lighting.
IMHO I don't like the sloping background, makes to too distracting for me, I would try to rotate it about 6 degrees in a clockwise direction

What happened to the Goal Keeper?
Great Shot, I like the composition and you waited for the right moment.
IMHO a higher aperture could have been used to blur the crowd in the background, or the shot could have been taken from a higher angle simply to visually separate the heads of the players from the crowd because I find it visually distracting. But I still think this is a great shot.

My first macro shot (ironically using a 135mm lens), converted to B&W.
Any thoughts or criticisms appreciated.

Nice composition, the sky has been merged very well and like the idea, but IMHO I think it is too dark in the left corners, right side is good (you can see the bank of the river). The other problem that I have with the shot is there is no reflection of the moon on the water.
I hope you are enjoying the 10D; it is great camera and keep trying the merging, I think this would be awesome with a water reflection - even I have yet to complete a good merge of two frames.

Football player before kick off during his grand final. This was my
first attempt at colour to BW conversion and one of my better
portraits to date. All comments welcome, especially critical comments.

Great work catching the moment, you also have composed the frame very well.
IMHO you would have been best to be on the other side of the track to use the sunlight. From the shooting angle you have used the subjects appear too dark because of the bright sky. On the other side of the coin you can use the bright sky to capture a silhouette of the airborne rider.

This is a fantasic shot, great focus on the face, good shooting angle removing dark shadows on the face, and good DOF. Well done!

My favorite night shot. A 10 second exposure without a tripod.
Any recommendations would be appreciated.

First attempt at a sports portrait shot - any comments appreciated

Wow - very well done indeed. Great catch, especially in capturing the emotion with the whole face being well lit - sporting shots that show the whole face are always hard to get in sunlight without harsh shadows - well done.
IMHO I would try to digitally increase the colour saturation as this only real thing that could be improved, as the colours appear little washed out to me.
-
Thanks David - now if only I can get this in a game not just at training :), the hardest thing in not to get the action, not that it easy to begin with, but the emotion that is part of it.
-
David,
your comments are so true - in sports photography aesthetics and originality come second place :) just get that moment.
-
Wow - that is cool, well done capturing the moment - also it is good to see that there is not a head still in it :) .
IMHO I would crop the image to capture number 75 to the right of the frame - this is because the large depth of field has captured members of the crowd. While this is not too distracting, by cropping it focuses more on the running back.
Well done

Very nice - I like this shot.
IMHO I think that it could be even better if you had the camera closer to the ground, to emphisise the hight of the stadium. Also if the side line judge is a bit too distracting for me, I would have moved the frame to have him far left and waited for the players to be closer to the camera (about the 20 yeard mark and the ball on the hash marks closest to the camera). Just my thoughts.
Again well done.

The good - good angle, you have been able to get almost all of the players in the frame, also - and I believe more importantly, you have been able to get some faces of the players - always hard with football in sunlight as the helmets create very harsh shadows over the face in sunlight - the only real way around this in wait for late afternoon, or a overcast day.
The not so good - as with the previous comment - depth of field especially important since the crowd are wearing team colours. Also I think is would be better to move the frame lower to capture the hands and feet of the Offensive Tackle closest to the camera, and possibly wait for all of the offensive line to be set.
Keep at it!

Finally managed to get a good lense and was lucky enough to get this
shot. I did manage to get the whole body but cropped the image to
focus on only the torso - just wondering if people think that the
crop was unnecessary?
-
Very well done in getting the action of this shot - this is always challenging and they don't come too often. Like the other comments the crowd is distracting but this would be the appiture limitation of the lense - only a lot of money can change this so don't beat yourself up. One method I use to get around the distraction of the crowd is to crop the image to fill the frame with as much of the subject(s) as possible. The only other point I would like to make is the AF has focused on the backgroud player; again it forces the viewer to scan for the player/ball. I find that if you can focus on the face of the player then do so - it shows the emotion of the player that you what the viewer to focus on. If you can't focus on the player's face then focus on the the helmet/jersey numbers and/or the ball. Again well done.
