Many thanks for the advice and comments.
Originally looked at the AFS 28-70mm f2.8 but as I already use a 17-35mm f2.8 the
35-70mm f2.8 is now the obvious choice.
The lens is new and boxed etc and selling for ?435 ($795) so I'm going for it.
Thanks again.

...or buy yourself a big old Nikon F5 then if anyone tries to steal it you can bash them with
it ...and it will still work afterwards.

I've been offered a 'new' Nikkor AF 35-70mm f2.8D which seems to be an earlier version
of the current model as it has a Push Pull zoom action.
Does anyone have any experience of this lens and are Nikon still producing this version?
Any input much appreciated.

Appreciate the input Rob...
Point of my post is to request feedback from other Canon Ixus 500 users so I know what
to look for when mine arrives.
-
Just ordered a Canon Ixus 500 with bigger memory card and spare battery.
Have been looking for a small digital point and shoot for some time and after much
research and prevarification finally decided on this model.
I also use a Nikon F5 and Contax T3.
Did I make the right choice?

Slightly off subject but... the Nikon F that stopped a bullet belonged to Don McCullin
(English War Photographer).

Try www.nikonlinks.com for loads of stuff on the N55 plus a download for the manual.

Have you thought about taking some 'inspiring' pictures yourself around your own home
town, perhaps with family and friends and emailing them to your sister?
Just might motivate her to reciprocate.

Suggest you search the archive. I posted a similar question a couple of months ago re
running Photo Secretary on my Powerbook G4 OSX 10.3.4.
Received some positive responses.

Thanks for all your input. Will do as Andre suggested and live in hope...
Shop I bought the lens from are the good guys: most of my stuff comes from there and
have never had any problems.
-
That's what I thought... problem is because these slots are damaged leads me to believe
that whatever service or cleaning wasn't carried out by an official Nikon Service
Department. Rather a false economy on a lens at this price?
As you suggest, if the results are as good as I hope they will be, there's nothing to worry
about... still left me a bit twitchy though.

The lens hood mounts onto the extreme outer circumference of the front of the barrel.
The ring I'm referring to is literally encircling the front element, about 8-10mm inside the
hood mount.
Hope this is more specific?
-
Recently acquired a Nikkor AFS 17-35mm f2.8D in near mint condition. On the ring
surrounding the front element are two 'slots' which show slight signs of wear.
Does anyone know what these are for and does the wear indicate the lens has been
disassembled?
Any input appreciated.

...me too.
Best Buy: Nikkor AF 85mm f1.4D. Staggering picture quality plus brilliant build.
Worst Buy: Nikkor AF 50mm f1.4D. Indifferent picture quality plus felt like it fell out of a
Christmas Cracker.

Thanks for all your advice... also did a search on the 20-35mm and it received a pretty
good press so that's the one for me.
The original new price on this lens was ?1300/$2395 but the (apparently overpriced)
version I saw has since been sold... so now the hunt begins...
Thanks again.

Does anyone have any hands-on experience of the Nikkor AF 20-35mm f2.8D?
For example: how does the image quality compare to the prime AF 20mm f2.8 or current
AF 17-35mm f2.8?
Recently saw a mint 20-35mm on sale in London for 545 pounds sterling (US$1010)... is
this a
reasonable price?
The lens will be used on an F5.
Any input much appreciated.

Way back in the 70s (man) I had a Canon A1 with Canon 70-210mm f4 and 50mm f1.4.
Looking at those pictures now reveals stunning sharpness, contrast and colour balance...
although some of the composition leaves something to be desired.
Now I use a Nikon F5 with, among others, Nikkor 28-70mm f2.8 and 85mm f1.4. The
results are still stunning but not that much better than those taken with my old Canon...
the composition still needs work.

...or a Contax T3: small, rugged and discrete (especially the black version) with a Carl
Zeiss Sonnar 35mm f2.8. Can be expensive but ideal for street photography.
-
Appreciate your prompt response Geof... seems I'll need to give this a bit more thought.
Thanks again.
-
Thanks for your help Geof. May I ask why you decided to sell your Photo Secretary... did it
not come up to your expectations or were there other reasons?
Haven't found much feedback on what this software actually does so can't really figure out
if it would be of any practical use.
Many thanks.

Has anyone used F5 Photo Secretary on an Apple Mac... will it run on OS X or only Classic
9?
Any input much appreciated.

My Nikon F5 plus Nikkor AF 85mm f1.4D. Ideal for most situations, totally impractical for
others... that's life.
-
In short: don't be an arsehole all your life... take a day off.
-
Of course 'complement' is correct... I posted it because I wondered what Henry had in
mind regarding supplementing his digital gear. Why query his own English... loathe
to mention '...couldn't care less...' in the original post.
Meanwhile...

Having said all this: the thing not only rocks... it also rattles.
Shaking this lens produces a distinct rattling of the front element which one wouldn't
expect of a brand new unit.
It would be comforting to know that this is normal?
