i like the crop you did!
to answer the first question, this was shot with two large strips standing on edge with two small strips wedged between them at the top and bottom. that's what you see in her pupils.

I wish I could say this shot was thought out and that I was trying to capture a 'look'. There was a small service going on, and I felt it inappropriate to take photos. It was really bright outside and really dusty inside, as they were doing construction about 100 feet away. When I saw this 'beam' I took the shot to see if the beam would show up. This was the only exposure I took in that cathedral. I'd forgotten about it until I saw the print. I was excited, but knew it was more fluke than competance.

I kept missing sunset colors time after time. I changed the metering to spot (rather than average or center weighted). I started looking for a neutral tone to meter from. In this case, I think I metered off of the gravel road. I think the biggest change came when I switched film to Fuji Velvia. It really pulls in these types of colors. Now sunsets seem to turn out more consistant for me. If you find other ways, I'd love to hear them, though.
