  1. A roll of good clear wide packing tape will provide you with a lifetime of screen protection for all your digital gear with a screen. After losing my $20 LCD protector off my digital SLR in a remote area of Alaska, someone suggested this packing tape. Works well, replace it anytime you want, dirt cheap, doesn't leave a mess, but you have to spend a little time to get a good fit. Some of you may not like this idea, but it works great in a pinch.
  2. I was at the "Pearl Market" in Beijing last week and many, many

vendors were selling mostly Canon and Casio point and shoot digital

cameras in their stalls. The cameras were recent models and the

vendors seemed willing to bargain down to very good prices. Of course

I was skeptical of the deal since I doubt warranties in the US would

be honored, but I couldn't help wonder if anyone out there has

purchased from these "markets" in China and thought they got a great

deal on a reliable camera. This is the same market where you can get

fake Rolex watches and fake high end brand name purses. The camera

that I could hold and inspect was not fake since I actually compared

it side by side to my own Canon SD500. If it was a fake, I don't see

how it could have made to such detail and be worth the effort. This

isn't like making a copy of a leather purse. So, anyone out there had

any luck with this market? I might pick one up when I'm out there again.

  3. Thanks for the responses so far. I'll check out Photo Gear Mall in Beijing. I can always get 120 in Velvia 100, but the 220 gives me 16 shots instead of 8. That's a big difference when you're trying to reload while you're moving in a van or boat. The Fuji 690 is great with 220 and I can always order it from Adorama or someplace like that. I might need more while I'm in China.
  4. I have a black MP and want to do some unique customizing. Camera

leather.com offers lots of colors and textures that would make a very

unique camera. The MP is is near mint condition, and if I do change

the covering will I be decreasing the value of this camera? Has

anyone had any experience with camra leather.com? Thanks.

  5. I'm having trouble finding the calculations or the conversions to tell

me what this camera's lens/format is equivalent to on a 135mm camera.

Can anyone help or show me the link to do this type of conversion for

all film formats and lens? Thanks.

  6. Here is a difficult to find Minox GT-E (two version). It has the dark

grey semi-sticky finish for a non-slip grip. Built in sky filter,

self-timer, backlight switch, etc. Please see the various websites and

photonet for more detailed info on this model. Box, manual, & all

paper work included. All original stuff. I probably shot 10 rolls

throught this camera. There are three corners that have some slight

rub wear. This has taken many excellent slides comparable to my

Leicas. Want to post here before going to *bay site. See pics. See

"huville" on *bay site to check out my feedback. Asking $200 plus

shipping. I don't take Paypal, but will accept cashier's checks or

money orders. Will also accept personal check once it clears. Email

me a phu1@san.rr.com or contact me through here to find out more.

Pictures available. 5 day inspection period. Thanks.

  7. I bought this lens used (on this site in fact). It was advertised as

having some dust in the lens, but the more I look at the front of the

lens, the more scared I get seeing all that dust. I don't know if the

light was just right when I looked at it last, but there seems to be

more dust than the first time I looked. Images/slides/prints are

clear and I haven't detected any flare or weird reflections of light

(I use the hood) so I'm not too concerned. I'm real happy with the

optics. I use the Leica as a tool not a collection. I know most of

you will say I shouldn't fret and generally I don't, but lately I've

gotten a little concerned so I'm asking this crowd of Leica people to

give some opinions. Did Leica have a problem with these? Should I

have it cleaned? Is it even possible to have it cleaned? I think I

should just forget about it and shoot! I'm sure I'll see some great

    replies.

  8. Where is this topic going? No, I'm not ready, but I don't dream or hope to have a show. I'm just having fun using my cameras, enjoying capturing images for myself and family, and reading what other have to say about photography. I do have a career that is not in photography, so I have to devote more time to that. I'm I in the minority here?
  9. The reply to your post didn't seem to take. Email me as I have a GTE for sale that I was about to put on eBay. I already emailed you some pics. If not interested, please respond so others might want to take a look.
  10. Thanks for the last two responses. It helps!

Trevor: I didn't mean to take over your thread for requests for help, but I hope some of this helps you too.

I welcome anymore commments or suggestions regarding D70 custom settings. Any comments on saturation settings?

    Thanks.

  11. Thanks Trevor for your question. I too have similar concerns/questions and I wanted to quantify the question you and I may have. I also shoot primarily in fine JPEG and choose to do most of the exposure/settings in the camera as opposed to spending too much time in PhotoShop to do post production. I am not a professional and use a HP 7960 photo printer which has, as the default, sRGB for its profile. My PhotoShop CS is set to Adobe RGB(1998), as recommended by most PS books, and I am currently setting my Nikon D70 at IIIa under the custom setting which is some sort of sRGB. I do not know if I should really be using the Adobe RBG (mode II) in the D70 instead. My question or request for information is this: For a JPEG shooter with a D70, what are the recommended settings for the camera, and PhotoShop CS knowing that I am printing on an HP printer with sRGB default profile. By using sRBG in some devices but Adobe RGB in others, am I defeating the purpose? or creating unwanted conflicts? Please don't tell me (us) to just shoot RAW and therefore always use Adobe RGB, since some of us don't want to spend too much time in PS.

Also, what is adding more saturation in camera actually doing to the image? Isn't this the same as using Vivid???

    Thanks for the help.

  12. I've gone to one and I doubt you can pick up too much considering the crowded room and the instructor's need to stick to their outline. For the same money and time, I should have gone out and spent the day walking the countryside and experimenting with my camera & lens and shooting lots of film or memory cards. It is you and not the camera. The more you try things out for yourself the more you will develop you and your style. Forget what other people (or companies like Nikon) are doing. Why does everyone have to photograph like everyone else? Go out and have fun! The technical stuff will come to you as you need it. If you are a complete novice to photography, just get a few of the excellent books on the subject. It will get you going in only a few hours or less. Good luck.
