Wow, thank you all for those comments!

    Arjen-

Thank you for taking the time to explain what you liked and dislike about the photo and I never knew about this form of lighting called tweazer lighting! Thankyou very much! I can see where you're coming from and will keep that in mind for future images.

    Frank-

This was indeed her first sitting and also my first portrait sitting but it was hard to capture a natural, candid type, looking image whilst retaining a flatering look. Will have to work on that next time.

Hi Shing Yan Lau! That's a very beautiful photograph. It captures the romance of travel!

    Crop in

    Stephen Willett, July 28, 2004; 10:17 A.M.

I like your photo. Its close to the best in plane shot that I have seen. I don't like the scratches on the window though and I'd probably crop in tighter. With the black border its just too much dead space.

Thank you allShing Yan Lau, July 28, 2004; 12:31 P.M. (edit) Thank you all for your kind comments. Stephen: I've uploaded a tighter cropped version. I do agree, there was a little too much negative space. A tighter crop improved the asthetics of the image (also changed the border to white to make it pop out).

I've always wanted to make a travel-esque picture by incorpating

elements of travel that everyone will recognize instantly. I could

never figure out how to make shots taken on an airplane work, but I

think this one is the most successful of all attempts. I like the

abstract nature of the picture, the shadows giving defintion to the

window and drawing the viewer's attention to the subjec matter beyond

this 'hole'. I hope to convey a feeling of curiosity; what lies

beyond this window-to-another-world? What do you think?

  1. The first time I used my 80~200mm/F2.8D at a 'live event'. I like the

contrast and how the viewer is instantly drawn to the dancer due to

the featurelss background. Focus and exposue was pretty good

considering I had to manual focus under extremely dim conditions and a

dynamic changes in lighting. I also like how the relatively slow

shutter speed made the hands nothing but a blur to imply movement.

I could potentially improve this shot by cropping in more, making it a

    tighter shot?

    Anyways, apperciate any critique!

  2. Glad it did the image more justification. As I've learned, no matter what scanner you use, you'll still need to mess aroudn with curves / levels to get the correct contrast and brightness level (and color / saturation for color photos).
  3. This picture was taken while I was up in a hot air ballon (crazy wake up call! 4 am?!), thus I didn't have much choice in perspective.

I acutally snaped this pic while I was on the way back down (it was around 9:45 am). As for the sharpness, I think it has more to do with the Jpeg artrifacts. The print looks pretty sharp (albiet slightly grainy) printed in 8x10". Nevertheless, stopping down more would of help ( I beleive I was shooting at F/8 or F/11).

Thanks for the comments! Apperciate it.

  4. "As the radiating warmth bathes my face, I feel the beginning of a new day.

A day full of new possibilities,

A day full of regenerated hope.

    The future promises many opportunities waiting to be seized;

A gift to us that many turn a blind eye to.

So value this gift, as life does not wait.

    Relish the past,

    Value the present,

    Hope for tomorrow.

And that my friend, is why I live." ~Shing Yan Lau

    Urban Sunset

          2

The most vivid and colorful sunset I've seen in my whoe life (there

were also pink and purple hues, but lost in the process of

    digitizaion).

Photographed this from my apartment building so it was pretty limited

in how I was to frame the image.

Hong Kong's answer to the Uk's tube and the NYC subway.

In my humble opinion, it's pretty hard to take photos in public

without people staring at you. With that in mind, I think this is the

best photo I have that best portray; Mass Transit Railway.

    Appreciate all comments and critique

I personally don't like it. The person closet to the viewer is mroe of a distraction than anything else. Lighting is harsh and unintresting. The only notable object in this picture is the expression of the person in the middle.
  5. First of, thank you all for taking the time to look at my picture! I highly apperciate it.

A little information about the subject: This is NOT A REAL GUN. It is a TOY. It's a replica that uses refrigant gas (HFC 134a, which is charged up inside the magazine) and is able to shoot out little pellets at extreamly low power/velocities (~1 joule). This particular replica is made by Western Arms and is a Gas blow back model. For more info you should check out these two sites:

The forums are a great place to start asking ;)

Where I live (Hong Kong), firearms are illegal to own, thus for any gun enthuist, airsofting is the way to go.

Anyhow, I've found that pictures with the slide in battery are generally quite weak. It's hard to get a good angle yet lighten the shadows (my camera doesn't have a hot shoe). This is espically true with the Glocks since they don't have much curvature/pronouced areas.

Once again, thanks for taking a look at my picture :)
