  1. From the Nov. 2, 2000 edition of the Economist.

"Chain messages circulating in Egyptian high schools call for a ban on Pepsi, because the five letters are said to stand for Pay Every Penny to Save Israel." So I say that the young man on the right did read his boycott list. Then again a letter to the editor in the Nov. 16, 2000 edition noted that "Pay Every Penny to Support the Intifada" is an as likely rumour. All that aside Richard this is a better than average picture of a peaceful protest.

  2. Everyone, thank you.

I feel silly because I did not realize that the raised rectangular part with the notch is the switch to engage the linkage between the aperture and focusing ring. I guess I should of worked it out but I never like forcing anything on a camera. Scott, your description is great. Most of points 2-5 are known to me, but confirmation is always good. Sanford, I get around the problem of full flash draining my batteries by adjusting the power of my flash unit. Jae-Myung Shim, if the aperature direction ring was reversed the lens could not have been mounted on a metered Nikon with meter coupling. Both the AI system, and its predecessor system require the aperture scale on a lens to decrease (i.e. 32->2.8) when viewed from above while mounted on the camera. So thanks again, and here is a description and photo just in case anyone else cares or this thread gets archived.

This lens has a sliding linkage that couples the aperture ring to the focusing ring. The linkage external component is the small rectangular part on the bottom of the lens focusing ring opposite the 25 foot mark. It has two plastic prongs facing the camera. These prongs serve as a sight to indicate the selected GN. The linkage is engaged by pushing rectangular part towards the numbers engraved on the aperture ring. You will feel it click into place when it engages properly. The travel distance is about 2mm, any less and likely you have not properly engage the linkage.

  3. Short Question: How does one use a 45mm f/2.8 Nikkor GN?

Specifically, the GN feature? Please, indicate if you have used

this lens or you are just aware of how to use it. Thanks

    Details: I recently bought a 45mm f/2.8 Nikkor GN non-AI version. I

bought it because, I like using cameras such as the Olympus RC/DC/SP

and Canonet (GIII) QL17/19 where one can couple the aperture scale to

the focus distance, and the entered flash guide number. Upon

receiving my lens I could not see how to couple the aperture ring to

the focus ring. Does the lens not work that way or not i.e. is the N

scale simply a look up table for providing the optimal DoF, aperture,

distance combination for a given flash GN? Someone was kind enough

to post a picture of a similar 45mm GN.
