i call this lens 50/2.8G. Shoot with f/2.8 and you get decent result.

I recommend buying new lens. i still have this lens. Using it for landscape work. Robust. Take filters. Very good sharpness at center. weaker as it goes to the edge. Don't recommend shooting wide open with focus point on edge. I mostly shoot landscape with f/8 or smaller. It is still sharp for me. Couple it with DX camera, it is an ideal for walk around lens / street photos. it "takes away" the edge too where it is weak.

Yes, Nikon D500 is very fast. Under dim condition, it performs well. However, DX in unnatural for me. High ISO is not so good. Noise is apparent (compared to FX).

You have to be on top of everything to fully maximize their 36mp potentials. It is not everyday camera. on top of that, it still uses the old 3500FX multicam AF module which is not very precise. It has only 15 cross-type AF points, which makes autofocusing job difficult. You have to focus via LV to get more accurate focus, and yes, even in the daylight! I recently acquired D500 which focuses so accurate, it becomes my everyday camera in any situation. It leaves my D800e in drybox most of the time. <br /> <br />To be able to get the best of (incredible) D8x0 sensor:<br /> 1. Get the best lenses (that yield the best resolution) you can get. Only a few of them in nikon lineup. 24-70/2.8 is not one of them. Even the VR version. and also all "prehistoric" nikon lenses. :)<br /> 2. Focusing in live view to get the most accurate focus.<br /> 3. shoot on tripod, with cable release (or self timer) and with Mup (mirror up) mode.<br> and optional:<br> 4. upgrade your computer with lots of hard drive space.<br> <br /> <br />Do that, and you get the best of D8x0. <p>Thanks Andrew for elaborate summation. However, I am not getting with 1.3x cropped format (as well as 1.5x cropped format on d800/e) affecting DOF. I understand about the S/N ratio, and pixels size and all that but how is DOF different in those original vs cropped format? It is basically the same image, only cropped with photoshop.<br /> I think it is more like 819mm / (4x1.5 x 1.4) = 819 F/8.4, as far as DOF concerned.</p>

<p>Thanks Allan and Ilkka. I just recently purchased a D500 and how it basically put my D800e on dry box most of the time. Thinking of getting a 300/4E and how it fits perfectly with D500 for 450mm range.</p>

I turn both bluetooth and NFC on my mobile phone and allow automatic download.<br> Pair the camera and mobile phone. Once connected, it is automatic download. I choose 2 MB file (not original).<br> I keep my mobile phone on my pocket. I keep myself busy shooting. When it is break time or done with the shoot, the files are already transferred to mobile phones and i can share the pics to social media (i.e : instagram). <br> So far it works well for me.</p> <p> </p>

<p>I have D800e and I found its AF performance inaccurate. My keeper rate is down. I sent it to Nikon Service to take a look at it. They were kind enough to lend me D800 for vacation. So I used D800 during vacation I was very HAPPY with it. AF performance was fine as expected. It seldom hunt. It performed well under low light condition.</p> <p>So I came back from vacation and get my camera back. The technician said "We checked everything. Nothing wrong with it. It is just the way it is"</p> <p>So I had it for almost 3 years. Since then, The focus were 50-50. Under low light condition, my success rate is down to 30-70. On moving subject, I dont expect anything anymore.</p> <p>I use this camera for one thing and one thing only: commercial. On tripod, and with LIVE VIEW Focusing.</p> <p>Else (wedding, children, casual, family, vacation, journalistic, event, etc.), i use my reliable Canon 5Dmk3.</p>

Use both (invest both). Keep both lenses. Buy and use the most current and advanced body. Lenses prices will not drop significantly so no need to worry for keeping them for a while. Switching bodies is marginal. <br /> Use the best of the two can offer.</p>

<p>I am puzzled with nikon AF technology; it stays conservative with 15 cross-type AF points from D3 to the latest D4s. Though they improve the sensor module but I think the cross-type AF points have lots to do in accuracy especially in dim light situation. I find my 5dmk3 has much more success rate compared to d800e in that situation.<br> We are discussing canon vs nikon, unaware that there's another brand coming out strong. Samsung has been catching up and its latest Samsung NX1 spec is quite amazing on paper. If good enough doesn't meet your expectation, you should go at least consider going full frame or jumping ship to medium format.<br> Ikka, my D800e is practically a landscape camera. Not an all-around camera anymore. The only way to get pinpoint accuracy is focusing through magnified live view, manually.</p>

Canon shooters envy nikon'DR and nikon shooters envy canon's AF. I own d800e and 5Dmk3 and i know exactly the limitation of both cameras. I decided to use two systems since neither of them can satisfy my needs. Nikon is conservative with15 crosstypes AF points from D3 to the latest D4s. I hate it. A week ago I did a modeling shoot and how i missed (no kidding) 90% of the subject eyes under shade or dim indoor light. D800e sucks big time. Where in this situation i get more consistent / better accuracy with my canon 5dmk3. 7dmk3 is a cropped sensor camera so dont expect a good DR performance. 7dmk3 is designed for speed and af accuracy. Else, for me, is a bonus.

<p>I always use AF-ON button. I feel like I can avoid camera shake by doing so.<br> AF-C mode, always keep it pressed <br> AF-S mode, always focusing using AF-ON.</p>

<p>nikon SU800 is the most unworthy/overpriced/unreliable piece of equipment nikon ever made. When it is made back in the day, I sticked with my studio monolight. Wherever I went, I packed my studio monolight. It is heavy but i had no choice until pocket wizard radio trigger came and save the day. Now numerous radio triggers with various brands are available on the market with very competitive price and very reliable. Day or night, rain or shine, direct or not direct, indoor and outdoor with High sync speed up to 1/8000s, I never look bad for mediocre infra red triggers.</p>

<p>Nikon should eliminate built-in flash from d810. It's nice to have, but I get some trouble when using with a PC lenses. I can't fully shift the lens upward because it get stuck to the flash hood. Whereas canon 5d3 doesnt' have one, so canon PC lenses work well with 5d3.<br> Speaking of PC lenses, nikon need to upgrade all PC lenses. </p>
