  1. Short answer, operator error! I heard it said long ago thats (its hard to make anything fool proof, because fools are persistant). A lot of people are getting Hasseys lately because of falling prices that don`t know a lot about cameras period. And thats fine but they are learing about them the hard way. I don`t think hassey has any photography schools any more. When I got my first Hassey about 25 years ago I drove to Richmond Va. and attended a class taught by Ernst Wildie the Hassey tech. director. Thats were I learned what to do, and what not to do with a Hassey.
  2. 35mm is better suited to low light candids without flash or tripod! It can be done with the hassey but you will need faster shutter speeds because of focal length of the lens and camera movement which will mean faster film speed. That is why you will need 800asa or faster film. You can use 160 or 400 if you use a flash, unless you are shooting outside. As said before, without flash you won`t get many sharp photos without a tripod avaible light indoors, you will get a few. Hassey has more camera movement at slow speeds , you can lock the mirror up before exposure ,but that makes candids hard. You have to use the right tool for the job. If I was planning to shoot low light with no flash I would carry the camera with the fastest lens I had and the fastest film I could get by with.A sharp 35mm image is better than a blurry hassey image.I do shoot in low light with my hassey and no flash but as said befor I always use a tripod if possible if I can`t use flash. You don`t use a sledge hammer to mount a picture on the wall?
  3. Kodak portra 800 or fuji NPZ 800 is the best way to go.The large neg of your camera will allow you to still get great images. I would rate the 800 film at around 600asa At little overexposure with print film is much better than underexposure. I have shot 16X20 and 20X24 portraits with both of these films. I use slower film when I can but if the light is not avaible you do what you have to do.Use a tripod for sure and fill flas if possible. Don`t worry about mixed light as a good professional lab can correct just fine. If you need 800 shoot 800! I would use 400 or 160 for the other shots acording to the light, I carry plenty of all three speeds when I shoot color.Tripod, Tripod, Tripod!!!!!!!!!!
  4. I use the older style pro shade all of the time. Both in the studio and wedding candids etc.It works better than any of the smaller shades. It also cost less, because one shade can handle all of the optics. It would be tough with a polorizer but I don`t use or need them.It works fine with regular filters because the use the inner bayonett mount and the pro shade uses the outer mount.
  5. 1 The switch between the syncro and compure is the depth of field preview.By pressing it down it will stop the lens to the f-stop set and will stay stopped down until you make an exposure.2 The red numbers are the EV settings, for use if you want to set exposures with a EV number from a light meter. The green numbers are shutter speed slower than 1 second.3 the red arrow is used to set the EV settings. You need to buy a copy of Ernst Wildi (The Hasselblad Manual) it will explain everything bettr than I can.A lot of people don`t understand opf use EV settings but I think that is the best way to shoot with Hasselblad equipment. If you have a lighy meter that shows the EV setting. When the f-stop and shutter speeds are locked together and the correct EV number is set you will have the correct exposure at any shutter speed or f-stop picked!I hope this helps you in getting started.
  6. I use 2 ELMs mainly which are the same camera only older. Works great not a problem handheld. I much prefer them over my CM because of instant returen mirror and other features. You will always get sharper images with a tripod. The 645 is the same basic size as a hassey. I see no advantage to a 645, been there done that but don`t want the T shirt. The hassey is much better you don`t have to turn the camera on its side to do vert or horz shots. Also the Hassey optics are much better than any 645s. I would vote ELX!
  7. I think that people should be able to make comments without name calling. That said if the camera was shipped with the correct screen it would not move around in the camera. I have 4 hasselblads right now and have owned more in the past and none of them have screens that move around in the camera. And I have had a bad experences with that camera store in the past. The correct screen in a like new camera will not move around , Mr Dewberry I`m sure has the answer as to why it does!
  8. You can start out with the sunny 16 rule outside. Set the shutter speed to the film asa-example asa160 would be 125 of a sec. Then set the fstop to f16 this is in bright sun.The c style lens locks the shutter speed and fstop together so you can make changes and keep the same exposure.I have two ELMs let me know if you have other questions. These are great cameras!
