  1. I've paid my models from $25 to $35 per hour, plus provided them with a few "free" pictures. Most of my prospects have responded to classified ads in an arts and entertainment free circulation newspaper. I state simply that I am seeking a model for portfolio development purposes, and ask applicants to send a letter and a sample photo. Most of the respondents have been "want-to-be" models, also looking for portfolio material. Some come to the shoot alone, but I've had moms and boyfriends accompany them too. I prefer that, in fact, lest one find oneself in a "he said, she said" situation. I do have a business card, which those of us who remember the "Rockford Files" know can make a difference. My luck with asking people directly has been limited, although a bit more successful when I've been referred by a third party. I agree with those who suggest using a modeling agency. The subjects are self-selected, and interested in what they and you are doing. You can sometimes rent studio space there, too.
