The following site has an extensive discussion of the likely conditions for a mirage, which is the first point in trying to photograph them: <a href="http://mintaka.sdsu.edu/GF/mirages/mirintro.html">http://mintaka.sdsu.edu/GF/mirages/mirintro.html</a>

Almost exactly the scene you describe is shown in the photocritique section: <a href="http://www.photo.net/photo/316301">http://www.photo.net/photo/316301</a>

I'm not a wildlife person though I live in SA, and I haven't been to KNP. I can tell you that Pilansberg has plenty of white rhino, and a few sable/roan. I took these pics on a short trip in Aug '95 with a 35-200 zoom:

I have taken many dozens of such photos, and the metering is pretty easy. The streaks are hardly much brighter to the camera than the rest of the sky (your eye tends to exaggerate edge contrast), and the exposure difference would seldom amount to more than 1/2 stop. Meter for the sky, or use the sunny f16 rule as a starting point, but note that bright clouds or dark ground may appear in the frame. Several examples on my website: http://www.capetownskies.com/sunbeams.htm
