  1. To Martin :

So sorry for the delay, it' a long time that I don't access photo.net

Anyway, yes, the repair was made under warranty in a week (including shipping !)and I've payed nothing.

Shame on the Nederland service !

The firmware update must be consider under warranty even if performed by the "end-user" ... or, on the contrary, why Nikon should post the firmware on his site ???

sorry for what happened to you

    Alberto

  2. This is just to share my experience:

yesterday I decided to update my D70 with the new firmware. I've

followed exactly the procedure described on Nikon site (I've

downloaded the firmware from Nikonusa site)

First I've "upload" the A firmware, everything turned ok (the monitor

    showed "Done")

I turned off the camera and I repeated the procedure (reformat the

card - placed the "B" firmware in the root of the card, and start the

    procedure of update).

At the end (around two minutes... but I didn't control the time for

sure)I read again the word "Done" on the monitor.

So, I turned off the camera.

When I turned on the camera :

    1) the monitor didn't turned on

    2) the upper display doesn't show the card capacity

    3) the procedure to format the card didn't work

    4) the green led on the back didn't work

    5) the Quality was set to JPG Large (normal comp.) and I can't change

    it

6)the word "CLOCK" is blinking in the upper display (like I have to

    set it)

    BTW

the camera focuses correctly, meter correctly.

The bracketing, the ev value, the single/continue/self timer, the AE

    lock are usable.

The camera fires with and without flash and the viewfinder display is

working, but nothing is recorded on the CF.

I reset the camera both with the two green pushed together, as with

the little depressed "pinhole" under the base..... Nothing happened.

I take off the battery for a while.... nothing again.

I call the Italian Importer (Nital): Mister Maio ( of Nital Italy)

was surprised and can't figure out what was happened ... maybe the

led on the back was still on when you turned off the camera ? I

didn't remember... but I'm sure that the word "Done" was on the

    monitor...

Well, today, I'll send the camera to them for the repair.

So, be caution (even if I still have no idea of what exactly happened)

I repeat : I followed exactly the procedure described on nikonusa

    site.

    kind regards

    Alberto

  3. I can only agree with you, regarding the kind of comments that we see everyday, and that "There really isnt critique anymore".

But it's an other story, and it has nothing to do with the habit of resubmitting a request.

I also understand your concern about "the more times you cycle your critique thru the system, the more you bump out someones picture and length of exposure"

But, please, consider what I've expressed in my previous post, that the problem will remain even if we restrict the rules, because after few hours of visibility, your critique request will be hardly visible anyway... We have too much new upload everyday (every minute?) to allow that your or mine photo will remain visible enough... Maybe it would be better to eliminated the page "Newest Critique Requests" but even if so, when you'll start to browse in a Cathegory, you'll obviously find first the last uploads... I continue to think that the problem of "resubmitting a critique request" is a false problem with a very low impact on the visibility of older request...

    kind regards

  4. Sorry, but I must ask to the moderator of this forum to delete the last post. Since there's no new regulament about repeated critique request, this last post is not correct.

Other members before, expressed the same concepts without named someone.

It is, frankly, an excess without reason.

  5. I have to repost my thought (in a "corrected" english :-), because we have different threads on the same subject... :

Where is the "abuse" ? Sorry, but frankly, I don't understand the compliant. Re-submitting photos is not prohibited... like is not prohibithed re-touching with Photoshop... and I really would like to know which of the two is really not ethical..

Second, resubmitting a photo does'nt force the people to vote for it. Resubmitting a photo in the critique, allows it only to have more visibility, but if the members don't like it they simply don't vote...

The real problem, is in the "rotation" of the photos in the gallery, meaning that the new photos uploaded are really visible for a while, going to be like "invisible" after some days. I think all of us have experienced that a new upload will receive votes, comments and views in the 2 or 3 following days and after becomes ..ignored. (the exceptions are the "fan clubs"...obviously... maybe realy not so ethical) So, I know that my images will be seen and judged ONLY (with rare exception) by who is online in these two days and the others (those for ex. that are working or sleeping in the other part of the world) will never comment on it. Now, do you find this situation acceptable ?

So, before to eliminate the possibility to resubmit, it would be better to reconsider the way the photos are showed in the gallery.

  7. Michael, maybe you can find at the same price of the Quantaray, a good usel lens.

I always think that with a low budget is meaningful to buy brands like Nikon or Canon. The final photo will be made by the lens, not by the body...

In this view, a new Pentax (with Pentax lens) or a used one was to be preferred.

  8. Ciao Steve !

generally speaking a mix should be better : Nikon FE2 with 24/2.8 and 28-105 will help you to cover the most situation.

A little tripod will be useful for internal shots in Church (we have many and beautiful here)

I suggest you to carry with you some films. In Florence, Siena or in Grosseto for example you'll have no problem to find big shop with a wide range of film,) but in the small villages you'll find only some kodak gold.

Black & white films should turn out good (we are going to have so & so weather in the next period...)

have a wonderful trip in this wonderful land

    regars

  9. Thanks Mark and Bob for the prompt replay.

Mark, many here are not Pro, many are here for Passion.

The fastest car you've mentioned is it real ? How many prints people are making from digital ? How many labs are offering quality in this kind of prints ? I don't ask you about a comparison side by side of a digital prints vs an analog enlargment because I'm sure you know it very well.

In other words, the fact that Kodak or other brands are going in that way does it mean they are going better ? And, that we have to follow ??

    To Bob :

Really, if I have only to "judge the final print" there will be no story. Or is there some new cmos that can do better 8x10 than my 6x4.5 ?

The examples you gave me, are not correct in my opinion, because the cathegories you've mentioned lives perfectly (but separeted !)

I only ask this, to separate these two cathegories, definitively.

  10. Particularly to the attention of Philip Greenspun and Brian

    Mottershead.

    Dear friends, I'm a member of Photo.net since February 19, 1999.

    I'm not a pro-photographer, I am a doctor primary, but photography is

    my Passion.

From 1999 to today the impact of digital imaging is obvious. I'm not

interested in a sterile war between the analog and the digital, but

the war started anyway, and we cannot ignore it.

I have requested (and ignored) to create a "second land" here on

photo.net dedicated to the digital imaging.

I strongly ask now again, to "don't loose the train" and start this

important modification : divide photo.net in two distinct sector.

I am, and I'm sure that many feels the same, frustrating from

the "contamination" (sorry I know this word sound strong, please

accept this term in a correct way) of the digital imaging creators.

I feel unacceptable that (it's only an example, but very common...)a

photo made in medium format could be superficially rated 3 or

injuried with comments like " maybe you can add a little bit of

    contrast in PhotoShop..."

We are (like it or not) two distinct cathegories of members and we

need a separation. I don't agree with generic statement like " we are

all talking of image" because the WAY we obtain it is TOO different.

The rating system is also weak : Aesthetics & Originality are too

    wide and generic.

This "condominium" between analog and digital it's the origin of

flames between members, suspects of copyright violation, members

    banned or suspended...

On the contrary side, The last flame I've seen , is related to this

    photo :

    http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo.tcl?photo_id=1776357

The author is an Italian who lives in Toscana (Tuscany) very close to

San Quirico and Pienza (where comes the famous and now "common"

    classical images of Tuscany)

In this shot, he made the replica of those famous images and

immediately received a lot of comments, some not so friendly.

He made the photo in digital, and many suspected an image

    manipulation....

I am an analog photographer, and my parents were from Tuscany, so I

can say (without fear) that this image is true. I know this place, if

you go there with a point and shoot you can achive this kind of

    image... without tricks.

Please, I'm sure you have understand the meaning of my request, I

feel my bad english a "real prison" for my thoughts.

Excuse, if I made some errors.

    kind regards

    Alberto Pastorelli

  11. Hi, just bough (20 days) an F100 with the 70-200 VR, replacing the F90x + 80-200 2.8 .

    Mine firsts impressions are :

    1) After 12 rolls of film I had to change the alkaline batteries (simply terrible !) my old F90x was an other story... maybe the extensive use of the VR feature... but I've used also other "normal" lenses... anyway, I'm trying the lithium now

    2) I miss the capability of leaving the film's tail out when rewinding (seems that this options is available via Nikon assistance...)

    3) the data back (MF-29) doesn't imprint shooting data, only date and hour. And, only on the frame (not between). More, the capability of printing the data on frame 00, is not completely automatic. You have to remember, when you put on a new film, to abilitate the data-back, and then to disable it after the "first shot". Really distubing...

    4) no mirror lock-up, even with self timer... it's a pity...

    5) no eyepiece curtain

6)previewing DOF is now electrical (just to drain more batteries...) and make high noise (seems that you push the shutter...)

After those considerations, the camera works perfectly.

Anyway, I find myself disturbed from what I've reported (expecially for the price....)

    regards

  12. Hello Richard !

    1) "Will I have to use exposure compensation on every exposure that I take? "

No ! Only when the circumstances required it. For example, when you can't go more near (to fill up) to meter the part of the image you want.

    2) "I understand that with the 35mm and probably with the 45mm I will need to open up a stop or two "

This is not a rule. If the background has a difference of one stop or two and the subject you need is little or not centered you can do it, but, remember, this doesn't mean "always"

By the way, with color negative (and more with a 400 iso like NPH) you have an exposure latitude wide more than 2 stops...

    3) "am actually thinking about buying the new 645Nii...but do I really want to spend $1500 for a new body..or would I be better off just buying a spot meter and learn how to use it in conjunction with my P645 "

The 645n is a wonderful camera, but the only changes (in metering) from the manual 645 is the capability to meter in a "matrix" mode.

    4) "I've read in some posts that center weighted metering is one of the metering options put in cameras just for the "good old boys" who learned their trade when that was the only metering available....but now it is obsolete and no one really uses it anymore. Any thoughts on that? "

I really think this is a kind of nonsense observation. There are situations in which you have no time to measure in multiple spot to build an average or center weighted, and the matrix system is in error... It doesn't exist an "obsolete" way to measure the light, on the contrary is the subject that requires a different method to approach.

    kind regards

  13. In my experience, some of the best MF lenses are from CZJ.

For example, the 300mm f/4 Sonnar MC is a wonderful lens both mechanically and optics.

I use it, with an adapter, on my Pentax 645N, loosing the autofocus (but with focus confirmation in the viewfinder)and working in stop-down mode.

I can also use it with the Pentax teleconverters (both 1.4x and 2x) with great quality results...

By the way, the 180mm f/2.8 Sonnar MC is even slightly better...

    regards

  14. As I stated in many other responses, the Pentax 645N is , in my opinion and between the many camera I own, one of the best investment I've made.

And regarding a previous post that claimed : " ...Your Leica gear is able to do things that most MF gear will not be able to do, namely give you excellent photographs while shooting at low shutter speeds handheld..." sorry, but I strongly believe the contrary.

I extensively use the Pentax 645 in any available light with good results. And when you'll start to make enlargment the Leica will remain at home only as a "status symbol".

The Pentax lenses are wonderful, the only one I sold was the 80-160mm that did'nt satisfy me at all.

The 45mm is exceptional, the 120mm macro razor sharp too, not speaking of the 55mm (not autofocus) or the 200mm...

And more, they are cheaper (thank God!) than others...

More, it is possible to use via an adapter, great lenses like the Pentacon 6 (Zeiss Jena)

The camera body is wonderful with the highest engineering design, with a Photographer in mind. Think only to the double tripod attachment (at 90° degree) that allows you to change from landscape to portrait in one second... All the commands lies where you normally think they must be... it is capable of spot, medium weight and "matrix" readings... wide or "spot" autofocus...continuos or single shot... bracketing... exposure memory lock... all modes... multiple exposure... normal AA batteries...

And the wonderful capability to impress the data (f-stop, shutter speed, mode and reading, on the film out of the frame of each exposure.

Yes, it has no interchangeable backs (I mean in the middle of a roll) and no interchangeable viewfinder.

    Anyway, she makes wonderful photographs.

    regards
