  1. And to Kelly: There is no duty on most photographic equipment, but there is sales tax (14% in Ontario now). The reason why your customers were hosed by UPS was probably because you sent their item UPS Standard, which is nice and convenient for you, but completely worthless for anything valued at more than $20 because of their ridiculous brokerage fees.

    By the way, I can't believe you think it's so hard to send mail internationally through USPS. I am happy to send items to the US, and it annoys me when US sellers can't be bothered to send stuff here. I have heard the "customs form" excuse so many times. The CN22 (or equivalent) customs form is NOT hard to fill out! There is nothing like a seller telling you that your business is worth so little to them that they can't be bothered to get off their ass and go to the post office and mail a $1000 item, or even have the USPS pick it up from the door.

  2. I occasionally find it is cheaper or in my interest to buy items in Canada. For example, I bought my 30D from a store in BC and avoided paying PST, which made it slightly cheaper than ordering from B&H at the time. I bought my film scanner from a place in Quebec, again to avoid PST. It was somewhat more expensive than ordering from B&H, but Nikon Canada will not honour US warranties, so it was worth a bit extra to have a useful warranty (plus my Mastercard extends the warranty if I purchase an item with a Canadian warranty). I also sometimes buy small items from the local Henry's when I don't want to place a large order with B&H to offset their high minimum shipping charge.

    Unfortunately, those items were exceptions. Even compared to ordering from out of province, B&H's pricing it usually significantly better than Canadian dealers. Canon Canada seems to be making more of an effort to bring Canadian prices in line with the current exchange rate, but it often not enough, and there have been no changes to pricing on older items (like their entire lens line-up). At least we can be happy that Canon offers full North American warranty coverage. Nikon users get screwed with higher MSRPs (the D200 is a full US$200 more) and the "Canada only" warranty game.

    Dear Chris,

    <p>

    Not very! And they are, shall we say, very highly coloured. (I talk to Bob from time to time).

    Cheers,

    That is certainly the impression I got having read many of Bob's forum postings, as well as his own site when he was updating on his case.

  4. From what I remember (I did some calculations), the D200 has something like 15% more area in the viewfinder, which is not really a huge amount.

    I would love to compare the 30D and D200 side-by-side in person, but even now it is impossible to get my hands on the Nikon in Canada. I ordered one on December 8, then eventually decided to go with Canon instead (delay did not factor into the decision). I could have walked into a store here and bought a 30D the day it was released in Japan. I cancelled my D200 order after picking up a 30D at the end of March, but there was a miscommunication somewhere along the line. The store called me up on April 7 to say my D200 was in stock. I felt pretty silly telling them I didn't want it anymore (the salesman was very excited...).

    The bottom line is the the viewfinders in both cameras are crap compared to almost any film SLR. Using my Canon A-1 after my 30D is just crazy, and that is not even a 100% viewfinder.

  5. Basically, the 1.8 is a piece of crap. Optically great, but really bad in all other respects. Get the 1.4 if you can afford it, or the 1.8 if you're on a budget/won't use it much. I have a 1.8 because I am on a limited student budget, and it bugs me every time I use it. For $80 is it very good value compared to the rest of the EF line-up, though.
  6. The newer Apple camera connector is much better than the old Belkin equivalent, but as far as I'm concerned, it is not really a practical solution for storing files from your 5D. It is still slow, still drains the battery, and there is no way to preview raw files. A dedicated portable storage device would be a much better choice.
