  1. Hello Pnet members..

I am wondering what do you use "Smoothen" grainy images off high

ISO? With my Nikon D70, even ISP 400 is displaying quite a bit of

grain in dark areas making any kind of cropping unacceptable. The

whole objective of bumping up the ISO to handle the lighting

    situation is out the window..!

I was shooting humming birdsthe other day around 7:00 AM under

overcast condition and the I using ISO 800 and then at ISO 400

hoping that I can increase exposure using the RAW plugin. And every

single image was grainy... I finally went down to ISO 200 but I

couldnt even get a sharp image of the bird

    (http://www.photo.net/photo/3678985) due to the

    shutter speed.. :(

The worst being unacceptably high grains in dark areas at 800 and

1600 which I found out after trying to get a composite of the milky

    way. (http://www.photo.net/photo/3677672)

So.. the next best thing will be to get a program that can do a

decent job of handling the grains.. is there any that is preferred

    for this kind of work?

    Thanks and Cheers

  2. Hello P.Net members,

I am looking to buy a used TC for D70 & Nikon 300mm AFS F4. KEH

lists TC-14E and TC-14E II models.

    1. Is there any optical difference between the two? They're both 5

elements in 5 groups, same weight, 10 contact pins, etc. etc..

    2. What model should I be getting for my combo if they happen to be

    compatible with my setup?

Any one experience with the TC20 performance? is there a big drop in

sharpness with this combo and does AF performance drop significantly

    compared to the 1.4X?

    Thanks in advance

  3. Dear Photo.net member,

I realize my question is a very generic one and I have seen few

    similar posts but

dont have much info and runs out of steam.

    My question:

I am looking for some lighting equipment information for a starter

    portrait studio setup.

    My equipment:

    Nikon FE2, Nikon D70 and Nikon N80.

    Lens: Nikon 50mm f/1.4, Sigma 105mm f/2.8 macro, Nikon 180mm f/2.8,

    Nikon 300 f4 AFs.

I will at somepoint investing in a nikon 85 f/1.8.

I understand that the lighting is highly specific to

    setup/preference but I need

basic information about the type of commonly used

( and preferred) light types, accessories that I can do

    research on before investing.

I can spend around 500$ over the period of 6 months setting this up.

Thank you in advance and as always I appreciate the help.

  4. Just an addendum to my post.

The bogen 3405 has pan-tilt head and it is non-removable.. so if you want to change heads, then this is not for you.. but if you just want a good compact tripod for hikes, then this is really good.. also the center column can be reversed for low angle shots - if you want to twist your neck to some crazy position :)

    Take care

  5. Thanks for info guys. I sure will mail Dave too.. There is no doubt that his compositional and creative skills are unmatched. It is just that with winter approaching, I am not gonna have a lot of time with light for outdoor photography (other than star trails etc) and I really would like to build a setup that can be used for experiments.

  6. Hi, I am trying to comeup with a lighting setup to capture

controlled experiments and I need help buying equipment.

For example, What is the lighting scheme of David Nitsche's pics

    http://www.photo.net/photo/2987370

    http://www.photo.net/photo/2577451

Is this strobe or just bright lighting with high shutter speed?

I would welcome suggestions for specific light models also.. :)

    Thanks in advance and regards

  7. I do go to the botanical garden a lot, the problem, I was not

able to select a location where the birds will return every time..I spent 4 hours once without getting one good shot :( .

I am hoping to setup the feeder next spring and hopefully get some

hummers.. :) I just dont seem to get tired of watching these birds.. Thanks for the tips Scott , Regards - Anis

  8. Hi,

I am looking for hummingbird spots to photograph them in wild. Is

there a spot in austin,Tx where I can find them. I did

manage to find a bunch of these little guys/gals when I went to

possum kingdom state park.. but the light was so low that I could

only manage 1/200 and would like to capture them at 1/800 or higher.

Here is an image I took last week..

    http://www.photo.net/photo/3678985

If someone can Identify the species, that will be great!

  9. Also, Is it possible to buy a quickrelease plate combination (like

a third party one) to use with the existing ball head? Like a bottom

one screwed to the ballhead and a another release plate to

the camera ? or do I need to buy another head just to get the

    quick release capability?

    Thanks

  10. Hello,

After quite of bit of tussle with different arguments I have

bought a Benbo trekker finally. I (would like to ) primarily shoot

macros particularly insects and such. The tripod I had earlier

for that was a bogen junior..and it didnt provide the kind of

support I needed in field. After much research it came down to

Gitzo 2220 explorer and benbo trekker.

When I got the benbo, I found it quite ackward to set itup in even

basic position.. that one lock control was a bit novel to me.. but I

think I am getting the hang of it now.. any tricks you recommend for

setting this faster :) ? I was reading one post here that setting

this thing is like setting up a dead spider..lol

My other question is, what kind of head do other owner of this (or

similar tripod use).? the little ball head that came with it doesnt

    look like

it can hold a D70 with 180mm with extension or a 180mm macro lens..

and without a quick release plate, It becomes a bit difficult to

take the camera out fast enough as it the requirement with insect

shots where you need to move fast..

as always thanks for the info !

    Cheers

    Anis

  11. I really think you should consider the collar version.. I got that push pull zoom last year... the image quality is very good, but the weight is just too much to hang on the camera.. and you cannot set your camera in vertical postion as it will just pull it down..

having said that, the lens is built very well, and is very crisp. So that 300$ is very good deal for this lens.

  12. Pablo,

You can be reasonably sure that your new F5 will be pretty good

shape.. I have bought quite a bit of stuff from KEH (all in bargain) and I am yet to be disappointed. They have pretty conservative rating.. I too am looking for an used F5 .. may be I can find one in 400$ next year :)

    Regards
