  1. I just sold my new Summilux to a member and am in withdrawl.

    Looking for a 50 1.4 or 1.5.

BUT need something that I can drop or abuse and not feel remorse.

    So am looking at

    Nikon 50 1.4

    Canon 50 1.4 or 1.2

    Jupiter 50 1.5

    Voigtlander 50 1.5

    Zeiss 50 1.4

I am leaning towards the Voigtlander Nokton.

The only one of these lenses that I have prevously owned was the

Canon 50 1.2 It was not one of my favorites but it was Fast.

Has anyone done any comparisons with color film or slides?

Is there that much difference between a cheap Jupiter and the Nikon?

How about hoods for the different lenses?

    Filters?

    How about coatings?

    Thanks

  2. http://kitamura.co.jp/

    http://www.fujiya-cameraten.com/

Kitamura have some used M6 and Fujiya has 20 or so.

Prices are 110,000yen($940US) for the M6 and 130,000yen($1110US) for the TTL. Both are excellent companies. I use Kitamura mostly because I can order a used camera from any store in Japan and have it sent to my local store , examine it and then decide IF I want it.

Both of their pages list used cameras and are updated everyday.

Any questions or if you need some sales peoples name , give me a buzz and I will introduce you.

  3. I have put an order in for a custom Fogg bag.

It will be a smaller version of the Lyre and no front pockets.

I needed something to fit in my briefcase but also carry like a

regular bag. Will hold a M/35 (or 50) mounted and a 50 and 90 stacked.

If anyone is interested please contact Nigel at Fogg.

Or for any Japanese listers Hiroshi Yashima (Distributor).

  4. The first time I and my wife came to Japan about 17 years ago.

I went to the tourist information desk at Narita airport and asked them to find me a cheap hotel. They took me at my word and found a $12 a night converted office building hotel.

My wife always brings that Hotel up whenever friends talk about their vacations.

I recommend staying at a Ryokan or Minshuku.

If you want a total Japanese experience stay at one with an Onsen.

Most people in Japan take their holidays at Onsens.

Very relaxing and the Ryokans prices tend to be a little higher about $100 per person but include dinner and breakfast. The dinner is usually very good and is something you will remember for the rest of your life. Dinner is usually about 10 different dishes and it is served in your room.

Stay in one city and explore it well.

Kyoto is considered the most beautiful city in Japan.

Tokyo or Osaka are considered the most exciting.

Choose one and then explore it.

I live in the north of Japan and prefer it to the chaos of Toyko.

  5. 4 kinds of tripods.

    -heavy

    -med

    -light

    -super light

    I would choose super light.

-less than 250gms or under a pound

    -less than 10 inches

    -under $20

-it lived inside my camera bag

Don`t laugh but it is those cheap car radio type antenna.

Now comes the smart part remove the cheap head and replace it with a Leica Ballhead. Instant upgrade and everybody in the know checks their trusty Leica accesory catalogue for this "very hard to find Leica acessory tripod" that was only available to a chosen few.

Shoot my secret is out now.

Tripods are made for many purposes and I have heavy , medium , light and super light. One tripod will not do everything.

  6. Hmmmm

    Billingham Alice

    Domke F5

Lowe Nova (can`t remember exactly but something like that)

Coach ladies purse (I still use that one but leather is Heavy) it has a handle and strap and most importantly doesn`t look toooo feminine.

I`m still looking for something even smaller that I can throw into my briefcase. I have a new bag made for digital cameras that fits a M6ttl+35/2 and a 50/2+90TE stacked on each other. Problem is it has a front pocket that makes the bag larger than necessary. It has a flip top because zippers tend to catch or scratch. The bag is 2.75"x 6.75" plus the front pocket. So for my purposes that is the perfect size

There was a bag maker posted this week that has some really small bags.

Can`t remember the name.....but there was a homepage posted.

I might try one of their bags. But as I recall "tres cher"

So I would check some of the digital camera bags at a local store.

2.75" should be a good depth and shorter than 6.75".

  7. -more compact, the hoods stick out quite a bit and always get caught on the inside of my jacket

-I need to keep the lens cap on at all times(well not when shooting) because of the dust at the race track

From what I remember someone stacked 3 or 4 39mm filters on the 90 and 2 or 3 39mm filters on the 50 and 35 before any vignetting occurred.

  8. Looking to make compact hoods out of stacked filters.

Someone posted a comment about how many filters can be stacked before

    vignetting. Particularily 50/2 , 35/2 and 90 TE .

    Any source for cheap filters?

Also what caps do you use on filtered 39mm lenses?

  9. I have owned a CL , M2 and M3`s.

The CL was my pocket camera with a 40 and sometimes a 90.

The M2 and M3`s were what I used with all the other lenses.

    For versatility choose the M`s.

    For pocketability the CL.

    For resale the M`s.

    For endurance the M`s.

For repairing the M`s are easier(to get serviced) and the same price to repair as a CL.

    Personally I would choose a M.

For lenses it really depends what you put on your SLR when you shoot inside.

For me I always (inside and out)keep a 75-150 on my SLR.

And when it starts to get dark I put on 50 1.2 or 85 1.4

But my alltime favorite SLR lens has always been a 135.

But I`m not comfortable with the 135 on a M.

If I could only have one lens with a M I would probably choose a 75.

    But for you.......

Sooooo I vote for the M2+50(rigid)

  10. Probably 90percent of my published race photos were shot with a 135.

Albeit they were all done with Nikons.

But as I officially retired from racing last year.

I`ll be shooting racing for my enjoyment with my Leica M6ttl and 50,CV75, a 90 and maybe a 135 if I can learn to coordinate the finder and focus.

Do the 135 bugeyes work with the M6 ?
