Henry Clark: I did not do spot metering and 16-35 is gone now. Your suggestion about the different light distribution patterns fooling the evaluative metering makes sense to me.

 

Baivab Mitra: I do have a 24mm prime. Since I ended up keeping the 17-40, I will test them against each other.

 

M Barbu: Your questioning the lighting conditions is fair enough. I did the testing indoors, with window light, no direct sun in view on a clear day. I have no way of detecting 1/3 to 2/3 of intensity change without actually metering for every shot. But the compared images were taken in the same 20 min. time frame -approximately- and not in a particular order. Meaning I kept switching between the lenses many times and my testing was completed in two days. So when I claimed that the lighting conditions were the same, I was convinced that I ruled out that possibility. My observation was consistent throughout the process and also note that the manual exposure results were identical.

Recently I've been shopping for a wide angle zoom lens. Yesterday I had a chance

to test both 17-40L and 16-35L on my 5D. I covered all f-stops at the focal

lengths of 16, 17, 24, 35 and 40mm.

 

There was one puzzling observation I could not make sense of it: In Av mode, all

17-40L shots were 1/3 to 2/3 stop darker than corresponding 16-35L shots.

Meaning, under the same settings/lighting conditions, the camera metering was

consistently different for the lenses. When I shot manual, the outputs were

close enough to be called identical. In case you wonder, the camera metering was

evaluative in Av mode.

 

I could not come up with an explanation for it and I am quite curious. Any ideas

about what is happening?

 

Thinking that they are not relevant, I am not including the general results of

my tests in this thread. I will be more than happy to share them with anyone

interested in. Also I have all the raw test files if you'd like to see and make

your own conclusions. Feel free to email to me.

No Leslie, I stayed until the end. Ten or so of those images were taken during the actual parade. Maybe I'll post a few more. Wasn't it a fun day? The energy around was very moving. I was very wet and tired at the end but I am glad I went.

I use Photoflex softboxes. They are very good quality and considerably cheaper than Profoto.

Are you sure you have "Profoto Grid Reflectors"? Because "Profoto Zoom Reflectors" are different and they measure 7.5"!

Custom Function #10 - Superimposed Display needs to be set to 0=On.

If you are interested in semester long/more serious courses, all community colleges offer them. West Valley College - Photo1 course covers both film and digital photography basics including the darkroom experience. Most community centers offer shorter and simpler digital photography classes.

 

The nice thing about the community college courses, the earned units count for both high school and four year college requirements. We did this for my daughter when she was in high school.

I worked on it a bit. The arm is enlarged using the liquify filter (bloat and warp with a large brush). I also increased the overall contrast (levels & curves) and sharpness. Hopefully that's what you needed.<div></div>

San Jose, The Tech Museum of Innovation has an earthquake platform that visitors can stand on and experience how the actual shakes from famous earthquakes felt. I also remember another exhibit, you can build structures with blocks and test their strength against different kinds of earth movements.

 

It is a wonderful place for both adults and kids. You can easily spend a whole day in the museum. About 50 miles away from SF.

I think it may be worth to convert to tiff first. It won't add information to your 8-bit original. But it will reduce the amount of destruction brought by the editing. I mostly notice the difference in large monochrome areas. As the previous poster mentioned, 8-bit files tend to show severe banding after tonal adjustments.

Phil B, Sorry it is my bad. I swear I had the same problem and was getting around it by transferring as I explained before or with batch process. I upgraded to the latest DPP version very recently, tried now and it is working just fine. I don't know if it was a problem with the early version, cannot verify now. Maybe I was just plain confused. Sorry again!

Try transfering to Photoshop from the Edit Window using "Tools/Transfer to Photoshop". "File/Convert and Save" converts the RAW file into JPG or TIFF directly without any adjustments you made. I hope it helps.

I was in Turkey this summer, it is my home country. You should also visit the Underground Cistern (Yerebatan Sarayi) and the Grand Bazaar (Kapali Carsi). They are all close to each other with the places mentioned above in the Old City. I would suggest taking a boat tour in the Bosphorus. If you are interested in getting the proper historical information, I would suggest finding a guided tour. It makes a very big difference knowing what you are staring at. On the other hand, it would limit you time wise while taking photographs.

 

You'll find decent local beer and wine at many nice local restaurants. The serving sizes are small though, especially comparing to American servings.

 

Safety shouldn't be a problem, keep your valuables close to yourself. Nothing major but I've heard some snatcher stories and I don't know how true they were. You'll see how friendly the people are in general.

 

Taxis are reasonably priced and regulated, pay only the amount displayed in the meter. The traffic is hectic, be extra careful when crossing across streets and do not assume that they will give you the right of way. There are ATMs everywhere, I find it the most convenient to withdraw money (in Turkish Lira of course) as I spend.

Thank you for the answers. I guess it is time for me to change my practice. I'll take a look at the book mentioned, one big reason for avoiding the sharpening was the doubt that I won't be able to do it the right way and mess up my prints.

I've been printing my full frame images on Epson R2400 in smaller sizes without

any obvious problems using the resizing utility in the printer interface. Is

there a reason for me to consider using Photoshop itself for resizing instead of

the printer utility?

 

Also I skip the sharpening before printing altogether knowing that the resizing

is not finalized. Outputs are fairly good looking but I still wonder if they

could be improved further with sharpening (assuming that the images are focused

properly).

First of all thank you all for taking your time and answering my question. Of course I do not want to give away my photography and I do not want to make a reputation by doing it. What I want is to gain the visibility needed to start my business going. I thought it as a trade off: Donating 15-20 hours worth of work, in return meeting prospective clients and proving them that I can produce the quality work they would want for their own businesses. This is not a random organization, it is a certain group of people I am specifically interested in gaining their attention, leave alone that they are all volunteers (to the extend of my knowledge) working together towards a common goal that I can relate closely.

 

Is this really very different than other forms of marketing? Don't I need to pay for my marketing anyways? At the moment I have more time than money. Honestly I do not know how to reach my prospective clients more efficiently. I am not one of the young fellow photographers who can afford to take their time to build their careers slowly. I am a middle aged mother who is crazy enough to seek a career change following a late found passion. I understand that you cared enough to spend your time to answer my question. I appreciate it a lot. But I would like to clarify that I am not trying to short sell myself or damage my image. I am open to any suggestions that would provoke my mind to approach differently to the marketing aspect of my photography. Best Regards.

I am planning to volunteer my photographic services for a non-profit

organization. The work will be consist of photographing their monthly

events and producing some corporate portraits. Images will be used for

publicity and on their website. Since I am just starting a photography

business of my own, I thought it would be a good way to gain exposure.

This is a networking program and the exposure may be very beneficial

for my business.

 

I would really appreciate if I could get some feedback on related

experiences or any details that I need to consider ahead of time..

Would it be too hard to implement the recent slideshow feature to

portfolio pages including all of the subfolders? Now I can see the

thumbnails without delay, I miss the convenience of viewing them all

in a single slideshow without switching between individual folders.
