  1. Not at all familiar with Deardorff prices.

I ended up purchasing an Ebony from Bruce a few months back and he gave me the best price out of (i believe) three US dealers (none here in Canada). Bruce was in communication with me immediately on all enquiries, had the camera in stock and shipped it promptly. Subsequent dealings revealed Bruces Schneider and Rodenstock optic prices to be the same and sometimes better than most competitive US dealers.

    Very Professional. Highly reccomended.

  2. Bill, i got my 1 gallon syrup (orange/root beer) jugs from a wine making supply shop for about 2 bucks each. For another 50c you can pick up plastic washered lids that seal up really well.

You have to wash them out really well, found out the hard way with root beer colored developer! ....

  3. Jan the Ebony takes the international backs. Therefore no modifications are needed for the Shen Hao/Da Yi backs.

I had initially tried to source used Sinars and Horsemans for many months with no luck (espescially rare here in Canada), so like you i jumped into the .net archives & discovered favorable reports on the Shen Haos. Kerry Thalmann likewise rated them positively in his 2003 View Camera article entitled "6x12 on a shoestring".

I picked up a Da Yi of the "auction site" for $200 USD and was/am pleasantly surprised. So pleased in fact that i will pick up another.

My criteria is: light tight/film flatness/ precise film plane positioning and even frame spacing. The Shen Haos measure up really well. Good Luck Jan.

  4. Bear Season is upon us, this tragic report urges strong caution to

    all.

A male Grizzly Bear that had been relocated into Banff National Park

(May 27th) returned, then attacked and killed a young woman jogging

at the directly adjacent Canmore Silvertip Golf Course yesterday.

It is reported that the bear had approached a woman photographing

wild flowers prior to it's relocation.

In that incident, the woman (& dog) was able to slowly back out of

    potential harms way.

    Here is a report

  5. Angelo it is great that you are asking for advice. But don't even consider this. Brown bears are unpredictable at the best of times, habituated ones are akin to looking down the barrel of a loaded gun with a faulty hair trigger. They are going to go off sometime, you just don't know when.

J Scott Schrader <Hoshino made it a habit of eating, cooking and storing food in his tent> I have read every report i could get my hands on pertaining to this tragedy & have never come across this. Please share your source with us?

  6. More than a few accomplished & professional wildlife photographers are still shooting film Casey for various reasons.

<Although there are "accomplished" wildlife photographers still shooting film, they will in not distant future all have to shoot digital because E6 will be the first film to become extinct and processing unavailable even if they've stashed away thousands of rolls in a deep freeze.> Pure bunk Jay!

Whil'st the digital juggernaut has diminished demand in 35mm E6 film use (incidentaly, i shoot both). E6 is a cornerstone in commercial stock, architectural, travel & fine art photography particularily in medium & large formats & as such will be around or available for a long time.

  7. Arthur, thanks for having the decency & common sense to ask about safely visiting Bear country.

Call in the visitor centre & pick up their Bear safety paraphenalia & talk to the rangers. You might get a hold of Herreros book as it's still the bible.

Don't forget, bears have lives too so the "R" word"s (respect's) a big (safe)deal. Enjoy your trip.

  8. Last month the photography community was saddened to learn that

wildlife photography pioneer Erwin Bauer passed away (thankfully

    peacefully)at age 84.

Tragically yesterday, Peggy Bauer (Erwins life & business partner)

was killed in a 4 vechile accident in their home state age 72.

Erwin & Peggy Bauers will be missed and fondly remembered.'"The

Bauers" where pioneers and a class act to all who knew them.

Best to their family and many friends....

    recently.

Erwin Bauer passed away peacefully next to his life and business

partner Peggy on february 19th. He will be sorely missed.

Best wishes to Peggy in this most difficult time....

  10. <300mm is a football lens, not a nature lens> Not true (maybe so for Mike).

The 300mm focal length was & continues to be a staple in the equipment inventories of many of the worlds top nature & wildlife photographers.

  11. CORRECTION on my last post. Artist Johnny Johnsons "Moose On Tundra" is actually entitled "Morning Thunder". BTW edition sold out.

Reminds me of a quote by the truly great photography art master Ernst Haas-"What better profession could there be than the one of a photographer, almost a painter in a hurry, overwhelmed by too many constantly changing impressions".

  12. Most everyone agrees that a lions share of wildlife photography out there is generic, often times boring.

But please don't let anyone try and tell you that photography (in particular nature photography) in its rarest and highest forms are not works of art!!!

Mark and Stephen take a good look at Lantings "Twilight Of The Giants"-"Penguins On Iceberg", Manglesons award winning "Arctic Fox & Polar Bear" Hoshinos "Caribou Crossing The River", Johnsons "Moose On Tundra" and a few of Brandenburgs wolf images.

  13. Andras,

i utilize both methods that you are enquiring into. I find i have more success with a "floating blind" as it offers more flexibility in one not being tied to a single location.

In researching, i looked closely at fishermens float tubes. Here in Western Canada there are many to choose from, but none could be purchased without some sort of modification. I lucked into a fellow who built custom float tubes for local fishermen. His designs came covered in a variety of cordura colors, i chose a standard army camoflage & ordered extra pockets for photo stuff & a more adjustable harness.

For camera support i cut out of "3/4 plywood a tube fitting support that strapped onto the front of the tube. It is painted (to repel water) & attached to it is a sturdy ballhead. A wire frame is hinged on top of the float tube & is covered with camoflage netting.

Naturally, a pair of chest waders is needed to make this setup work & particular attention has to be paid to making your camoflage netting match as closely as possible the habitat you are working in.

Good Luck, it's a lot of fun (& double check that no black equipment cords are hanging out of the pockets) ;-)

  14. Koen, we are in the middle of a late wet spring in the Banff Lake Louise area, so there is a whack of snow on the ground still making serious hiking a chore at best. Its a bit early for workshops this early in the season, but you should be able to book onto some guided tours.

There is transportation but you will have to do some research, a good resource would be www.canadianrockies.net to start with. I agree with Kevin regarding the Jasper option, but not about Banff & Lake Louise being overated, both are truly world class. One thing is for certain, you will encounter many other photographers.

    Have a good trip.

  15. Hans, you can adapt the 173 for the Lee system. I used a large semi rigid margarine tub lid (approx 16") cut to a square the inside dimension of the Lee filter holder slots. Centre precisely the front of the 173(cokin logo/173#)on top of your square, draw around the edge, then cut out the piece with a box cutter. The frame should quite snugly butt up agains't the original cokin slots, if you wish epoxy it in place. Not pretty, but it works.

  16. Rob, what Doug is referring to is the Knight Inlet fly in lodge almost straight east of Vancouver Island. Try www.knightinletlodge.com, or use keywords-knight inlet/grizzly bears. Costs are around $750 USD for 3 nights. Good luck.

  17. "But he said he wanted slides" So you get your lion & tiger images from your RF compact disc written onto slides. Starting at $5.00 Cdn for film writing (10megs)here locally does'nt seem that expensive to me, i guess price is all relative. Have seen RF discs @ around $250 (Cdn dollar).
