I am currently trying to decide between a Leica 90 Summicron, 90 Elmarit/2.8, Canon 85 f1.5 or f1.9, all in LTM to use with my Leica IIIg. I have loved using my 90/2.8 2006 Elmarit-M but that has mainly been on my digital M's, which have a wider range of ISO than I use on my various LTM cameras. I rarely use anything higher than ISO 200, because I really dislike grain. My normal films are Ektar 100 Pro, Fuji Provia 100 and Fomapan 200 B&W, so is f2.8 fast enough? - possibly. Otherwise it seems a bit of a trade off between the chromatic aberration of the Summicron against the spherical aberration of the Canon lenses. I am also told that the earlier 5 element LTM Elmarit is a little less good than the later 4 element Elmarit-M but the Elmarit-M 90 is so good, that "a little less good" is probably more than acceptable on film. I can get a perfect Canon 85mm f1.9 or a good Canon 85mm f1.5 for less than I would have to pay for a middling Summicron. I thought I had bought a near mint black LTM 90 Elmarit 90/2.8 but sadly it turned out the Japanese seller did not understand the difference between LTM and M bayonet lenses. A black Elmarit LTM 90 is probably like unicorn poo, often rumoured but never actually seen. Wilson
