  1. Returning to the "Question". You are a photoggraphy student on a $500.00 budget and want to use your money wisely. Buy the Nikon N80. The N80 will allow you to shoot in manual, aperture priority, shutter priorty, and in program mode. All of your bases are covered. The N80 has more functionality than the N90 and that is why Nikon has discontinued the N90. Why buy a camera that has been discontinued (the N90) when you can buy one that has more of the latest features (the N80). After MUCH research which included reader comments, physically trying different camera bodies, reviews from professionals, and opinions from camera dealers, I purchased the N80 with a 50mm f/2.8 lens, and the MB-16 power winder for approximately $550.00. I am very satisfied. I highly recommend the power winder because it makes the N80 feel just right. For $500.00 (finding one online, do not buy Gray market), you will not go wrong. I am planning on buying an F100 later this year, but first I am going to use my hard earned money to buy the best lenses I can get, then upgrade to the F100, using the N80 as a backup.

My advice for your situation is to do as I did. Shop online to find the best deal for the N80. I bought the 50mm lens new for $130.00, and the power winder for $90.00 from local dealers.

Photography is a wonderful activity and you'll find more opinions than you'll ever need. Bottom line is that you should do the research for yourself and buy whatever YOU feel is right.

    Good luck and have fun!

  2. I am in a simular situation as you. I want to start doing wedding photography, but I am on somewhat of a budget. I realize that the equipment I purchase must be able to meet the objective that I am trying to achieve. Therefore, for wedding photography, as stated by some of the other threads, I need 2 of everything. After much research, I've decided as an initial investment to purchase the N80, 35-70 f/2.8 zoom, 80-200 f/2.8 zoom, and the SB-80DX flash. As you can see, I'm investing more money in quality lenses and the flash, and that is because I plan on purchasing the F100 as my main body in the future and keep the N80 as my back-up. The reason I choose the N80 over the N90 is, from my research, the N80 is basically the N90 updated with more features but without the construction. I will not have to update my lenses when I buy the F100 and they will work just as well with the N80. The SB-80DX flash has a pc sync and can be used TTL from 24mm to 105mm. I'm buying everything online in order to get the best deal. I hope this helps in your decision making. Gregg
