Hugh, this is the only question I have ever seen here on PN that I actually know something about. I have been to this area about ten times and have never had any problems with theft or worried about my safety. The cameras and film you were thinking about bringing sounds good. I would recomend going to the Biosphere (forgot the name) which is south of Tulum. The Mayan ruins at Tulum are worth seeing once because of their location on a cliff overlooking the ocean. The ruins at Cobal (west of Tulum) are nice because not many people go there. Akumal is a nice village not far from where you are that is worth checking out because it has a nice lagoon to snorkle in. Playa del Carmen is worth spending an afternoon in. It is a great place to people watch and sit on the beach and have a cool one. Have fun, the weather is usually good.
