1.
Hi There,
I specialize in headshots and am really interested in your opinion regarding the difference of a headshot and a portrait photograph.
The major difference in my opinion is the client's rights of usage, our customer need to have full discretionary rights of images so they can add the headshot to web, marketing and branding needs. Where as in portraits the image is the photographer copyright material to be used in a more artistic and less commercial ways such as art shows, books and so forth.
Please add your opinions,
Thanks in advanced,

  2.
I am a photographer specializing in Headshots, currently updating my system for clients to pick their chosen portrait to be touched up. I am wondering what proofing system do you use or recommend? Currently I have been using Photoshelter for 5 yrs, but am looking for a new solution, their galleries produce a unique numbering system that does not match the actual file size. Every time I produce a gallery I have to match their choices with my actual images increasing my workflow, I also lose traffic by using them... I asked them to help me, but photoshelter is more interested in teaching than learning from their actual clients like myself who has been paying a monthly fee for 5yrs.
I am excited to learn about your gallery proofing system for headshots,
Thanks,
Carlos
3.
Hi Christal,
I read your passage for doing a 75 Headshots to a corporation which is a huge undertaking, you were fortunate to have a few people offer great advice. Michael for example seemed quite experienced in this area... Now, that I assume you went ahead and did it! What did you learn from it? What would you have done differently?

Thanks for sharing,
Carlos

  4.
I had the same problem during a shoot. Read this forum, contact Canon. They wanted me to deposit $250 before filling out a repair form...

I decided to repair it myself by using super glue in the areas where the original adhesive worn off. My camera is working perfectly well, my cost was $3.00 and it took me 5 minutes to fix it. The other way it would have cost me $250, shipping and handing. Three weeks minimum wait and who know what other BS, would be incurred. Not Thank YOU,

Fixed it myself and am happy with the results.

  5.
WOW, I was surprised to see the number of responses ignited by this topic. My reason for bringing this topic is that a potential advertising client decreased their print and photography budget while increasing the video and flash budget. Not providing video lost me a potential client.
I don't think that people will stop having images in their walls, but as a photographer who has been providing services since the eighties & dealt with a great deal of changes. Darkroom to photoshop, film to sensor, high quality low volume to lower quality higher volume...
Now, should I be adding video to my services? I have refined my company ( www.artofheadshots.com ), now I feel that its back to the drawing table - or not?
I was encouraged in the early 2000's to move into digital age and photo.net was paramount in instructing me how to do it. Now, its video. I love stills and am frankly not as excited about video.
What should I do?
Thank you for all your great comments,
Kindly,
Carlos

  6.
Hi John and Kelly,
I suppose the images have been brought down, because of Matt's complaint... I am not sure if I agreed with him as these images have been displayed in photo.net and wikipedia ( public domain ), he isn't a portrait photogapher.
Afghan Girl has a unique expression in her face, she is both beautiful, mad, young, naiive and wise. Her eyes expressions are powerful. The Mona Lisa, well its - Mona Lisa!
I see your interpretation of the difference of Portraits vs Headshots, true...
Thanks,
7.
Modern Portrait and the Ageless
Mona Lisa or La Gioconda is debateably the world's most famous portrait painting, painted by Leonardo da Vinci 1503-1505/1507.

Afghan Girl by Steve McCurry taken for the National Geographic Magazine's cover image in June of 1985, considered by some, the greatest film portrait photograph.

Our top image at photo.net - all time portrait at photo.net by photographer Paul Dzik of Stargard, Poland. January 2, 2005.

What direction are we going with an inflation of images posted in google, facebook, linkedin, and any other Social Media? Leonardo da Vinci took years of hard work to accomplish his painting, now an individuals headshot is posted every couple of months? A new Art of Headshots is being born or dying? What direction is portrait photography moving, or taking a circle?
8.
Hi Matt,
It interests me to hear from photographers about the difference between portraits and Headshots as its my profession and livelihood, and an area that I take seriously. I added an image that is relevant to Headshots, which I wouldn't have relevance as a portfolio image, because of its commercial nature.
Its an example of a Headshot and not a portrait. Which is a discussion that is quite relevant to professional portrait photogaphers, specially in cities that have movie productions like, L.A, Vancouver and New York.
I am quite looking forward to this discussion,
9.
Dear Portrait Photographers,

Do you consider yourself a Headshot photographer automatically simply because you shoot Portraits? Or a Portrait photographer differs from a Headshot Image Capturer?

What is your opinion of the difference between a Headshot and a Portrait?

In my opinion the difference is that Headshots implies modern process for capturing a portrait image, which includes social media sites like facebook, linkedin and tweeter. Headshots are professional images designed to evoke an acceptance from its viewers, by way of modern pos-production approach.
Looking forward to your ideas and discussion,
Sincerely Yours,
Carlos Taylhardat

    Headshots vs Portraits

What is the difference? Is it just words? Or are there style differences?
Headshots is the new terminology for modern Portraits. But when we think of portrait photography we think of school pictures, old studio boring images.
Headshots in my opinion means a modern professional portrait images. An image for casting, facebook, tweeter and any professional modern means. An image by a professional photographer that is well captured and exceptionally finished with all the latest and most innovative tools.
Thanks,

    Carlos Taylhardat
