  1. I like the 17-40mm F4.0L, possibly my next lens. It's most more affordable than the 16-35 F2.8L.

As this new lens is designed for both film and D-SLR cameras, I don't think it would have a smaller image size. Where you learn this?

I don't know much about MTF charts, but it's a Canon L lens anyway. I do want to know more about the lens quality as shown from those MTF charts as compared with other Canon L lens.

  2. I tested with a new battery set. I first the camera still show me an empty battery icon when power on. So, I believe it's the camera problem.

I keep power on and off again and again with the old set of batteries, it can start sometimes for a full battery icon.

I will return the camera, and take noted if the replaced one would have some other power related problem - like the batt drains when the camera is off.

Thanks all, and I will let you know how it goes!

  3. It's the first time I took my new EOS 30 out for photo taking

    yesterday.

One bad thing happened, the batteries lasted for only one roll of 36-

ex. The batteries are supposed to be new that come with the camera.

I seldom use flash, but just a couple of times when it was too dark.

In such case, I also have difficulties in focusing, so I found lots

of focus-assist light emitted from the flash and the lens keep

moving. I know it was power consuming, but just 1 or 2 times.

Any reasons for this except camera problem! Could that be the

    batteries sitting too long?

  4. I just bought 2 days ago an EF100mm f/2.8 Macro USM as it seems to

    be a very good lens.

As quite busy at the moment, I only have time to test using the lens

at home and late at night. I find some problems, I'm not sure if

it's related to the lighting conditions, or it's the lens, or it's

    the camera (EOS 30)?

    1. It can't focus (AF) sometimes. Too dark the environment?

    2. The lens should allow me to fill the full film with an 24mm x

36mm subject, but the AF failed quite often. Is it too dark again,

or too narrow the DOF so that AF failed to function?

Please help and thanks in adv.

"nikondigital.org SCOOP!! Canon drops the other shoe? After repeated news reports that the D60 has been discontinued, we've gotten reports from reliable sources that Canon will be introducing a 4MP D40 and 8MP D80, both of which will be shown at PMA. The D40 is expected to sell for $1400 with the D80 at $1800. This represents yet another price performance milestone in the low-end of the D-SLR market. We'll have more details once they are forthcoming."

It would be good if there is really D80, and it would be perfact if the D80 is using a full size CMOS!!!

  6. A question just come aross my mind.

When we use extender for our film-SLR, both the Focal Length &

    Maximum Aperture would be changed. Say, <EF 50mm f/1.4> + <Extender

    EF 2x II> will result in a <100mm f2.8>, right?

What about D-SLR, D60 has a "Focal length conversion factor" 1.6. If

we use EF 50 f/1.4. Most review will mention that the resulting

focal length would be 80mm (50mm x 1.6). Will the maximum aperture

    be changed also?

  7. Taking into consider the models of the same series, it took 2 years from EOS 88 (March 1999) to EOS 66 (February 2002), 2 years from EOS 300 (April 1999) to EOS 300V (September 2002), 5 years from EOS 50 (September 1995) to EOS 30 (October 2000), and 5 years from EOS 1N (November 1994) to EOS 1V (March 2000).

EOS 3 seems (to me) in a market segment different from all of the above, lower than 1V but higher than 30, there is no history here. (Please correct me if wrong!)

If the trend above STILL valid (I wonder), the replacement for EOS 30 should come out by the end of 2005. I do curious if there will be a replacement for EOS 30 so soon.

However, all D-SLRs available in the market so far are based on developed film-SLR bodies, not being built from the ground up. What if the design of EOS 30 have put some limitations on the development of their next D-SLR? (Guesswork)

BTW, as learnt from some other forum, D60 has been discontinued and no longer available from some of the Internet stores. If they are NOT going to replace D60 or EOS 30, should there be something wrong with their sales channel or what? Kind of new marketing strategy?

    Expecting news from PMA 2003!!!

  8. As I missed this question, I posted a similar one "Replacement model for EOS 30". (EOS 30 is the name of Elan 7E used in Asia.)

I found a big retail in HK has taken away all the EOS 30 from being "displayed" in their shops. According to their salesman, this model has been discontinued.

In early March 2003, there will be a photography show - PMA - http://pma2003.pmai.org/. I think (hopefully) there will be a new Canon film camera to be launched that will replace EOS 30.

Right timing: Canon D-SLR D30 and the new D60 are both based on the design of EOS 30 - more or less the same case. I think they want to launch a replacement model for EOS 30 now, and then after a year or so their next model of "lower-end" D-SLR will base on this new model. Seems reasonable, any comments?
