1. Hello,

This question is not specifically related to the photo.net website, it

can be applied to any website which allows patrons to upload their pictures -

    Flickr, Photo.net, Kodak, mPix etc.

When we share pictures that we have taken - landscapes, nature,

portraits - anything - what prevents anyone from copying (Ctrl+C), saving and

re-posting it somewhere else? Given that they may not get a full resolution

image in all of its DPI glory by doing this, a hacker may still paste it at a

different web-site for a different motive altogether. Interestingly,

OneModelPlace does restrict users from copying <Ctrl+C> images.

As an exception, California dwellers were requested by Yahoo Flickr

specifically for their pictures of the wild fires - these were then used in

Yahoo news and other prominent web sites. However, what stops a hacker?

Portraits or Glamor pictures - like those taken by experts here - may be

used in a totally different context in any other web-site. What prevents that?

Rules / Regulations? How can we avoid this?

Any information on this subject is highly appreciated.

Thanks for any responses,

Naveen

  2. Alex,
I never thought of low thermal conductivity...why is that a perspective?

David,
You are correct! there are soo many posts that keep praising the Gitzo 1228 CF...although it will cause a MAJOR dent in the wallet! The 3021 is my starter tripod, its served me well so far.
Thanks for all the information!

  3. Hello!
I currently own a Bogen 3021, love it - but its too damn big and heavy. I

travel a lot, really need something lightweight. My max setup is a D200 with

Grip, and an 80-200/2.8 lens. I have been looking at some Carbon Fiber,

    Magnesium / Basalt etc etc...
Most of these are expensive, and then again, I'll have to get a head

    separately...which is ok!
I have looked at the Slik 714 series, Manfrotto 190 etc. Any opinion / ideas

that the forum can suggest is welcome...
Thanks for your responses!
I agree, there is a whole bunch of reviews out there that the Tokina 12-24 is one heck of a cool toy! better than the Sigma counterpart...Ken Rockwell's site also lists it as a strong contender to the Nikon 12-24. Other forums in here also brag about the Tokina. I think I'll get one next week...

    Dave
...Never thought of Writing-On-Stone...I'll check it out, sounds great!!

Nancy
Thanks for the word of caution, I need to practice running faster than my hiking partner (lol)

  5. Michael
Thanks for this information, The sites you mention have also been mentioned in other forums, looks like those are very popular sites! I have them on my list!!
As for the equipment, looks like from all the responses to this post, the 17-35 is a must. I'm gonna go ahead and get me a Sigma 12-24 due to the 1.5X factor of DSLR's.
I did check out the official website, and I agree, they must have a lot of time in their hands, its more informative than other National Park sites.
Thanks a bunch for all the wonderful suggestions...

Greg
For some reason, I always thought GNP had only Grizzlies, not black bear...it'd be interesting! I am not overly interested in shooting wildlife, if they come overly close to me, its a different story :)

Thanks everyone for the wonderful suggestions...

  6. Michael
Thanks for the information...I'll be on the lookout for furry critters...in addition to lugging a Tripod and a 50lbs camera bag! just one more day in the life of a landscape photographer... :)

  7. Bruce
:) Yes, I do have a Tripod.

Tony
I don't want this discussion to change to a lens comparison, however, that being said, is there a considerable difference in terms of print quality if I were to use a Sigma 12-24mm or a 10-20mm as opposed to their Nikon cousins? I understand that the Sigma 10-20mm is a digital only lens. The Sigma's are somewhat less expensive...

DN
Killin me maan!! the lenses you mention cost more than my entire travel budget! but then again, thats what landscape photography is all about I guess.... :)

  8. Hello,
I needed to get some advise from the experts here regarding taking pictures

in Glacier National Park...some time in September. Based upon earlier comments,

I was considering [to avoid lugging a heavy backpack] taking my 17-35mm,

24-120mm (VR), UV filters and Polarizer. I have a Nikon D200 and an

F5, however, I'll probably end up taking only the D200 to keep my backpack

light; I mostly take landscapes. Any suggestions are highly welcome!
Thanks for any responses!

  9. Hello,
Ever since switching to digital the one thing that I miss the most is

multiple exposures. I hear that the new D2Xs comes with a button to overlay a

digital image on top of another...however, in the mean while for the common

folk [who cannot afford one] can someone please explain how this is done using

    Photoshop CS?
I use a Nikon D70, typically shoot in the High Res JPEG mode and am

somewhat familiar with post processing using Photoshop.
Thanks for any responses...

  10.
Most caverns also offer private tours, without the visitors...you could take a tripod in one of these...
Assuming that you have a tripod, things go lot easier...you can use an ISO 100, use a wide angle -- go completely creative!!

  11. Hello All,
I intend to travel to Monument Valley some time in July, from the Utah

side to the Arizona side. What are the best times to photograph here and the

    best locations?
Given that this is by far one of the most photographed locations in the

US, is there any other viewpoint other than the most photographed / most

    obvious locations.

Thanks for any responses in advance,
-Naveen

  12. Hello,
Anyone know of a place where I can photograph Snakes in and

around Dallas / Fort Worth? One obvious location is the Zoo, however,

if that were not a preference, any other locations?
Also, along the same lines, any special tips (besides staying

    careful) on taking snake pictures...?

Thanks for any responses...

  13. Hello!
There are numerous posts within Photo.net advising locations

where to take pictures in Death Valley...Question regarding Zabriske

point -- during this month (November first week) do morning shots

work better than evening shots? I have a Nikon D70 some 2 stop

filters, a warming filter and am considering using a Nikkor 14-28mm

    lens.
Also, I wondered if anyone knows which direction the sun rises

from -- South East or North East during this time of the year - in Z

    Point?
I am planning on being on Z-Point or Badwater for sunrise

(depending on the feedback that I get from this thread)...and the

    other place for sunset.
Thanks for any responses in advance,
-Naveen

  14. F5 F5 F5 --- the best-est camera in the whole world...built like a tank, it never ever fails. Heck, you can use old nikon 'manual' lenses and get metering! If you need something for the long haul, go for this and dont look back....
NN

  15.
...Sorry to hear the mishap! consider it this way though, it could have been a lot worse if you ended in the water along with whoever was in the canoe with you! As pointed out in most of the responses, digital SLR's have extremely complicated circuitry behind the lenses...if dropped or dripped, they're dead at best. :(

  16. I will be traveling to Kauai some time in June and am planning to

spend at least a day hiking in the Napali coast. I'd love to know /

learn about other member's experience in taking pictures at the

Napali coast - both while hiking and from the air. Locations, film

speed, time of year, tips, pitfalls any advice is very very welcome...
Thanks in advance for all your time
-Naveen

  17. Hello,
I need to buy a wide to tele - all purpose fast lens, am looking

at the 20-300 Tamron and the 28-300 Sigma. I will mostly use this

lens as a landsacpe lens, occasionally macro and portraits. Any ideas!
Nikon does not have an equivalent. I use an F5 and a D70.
Any help is highly appreciated....

Thanks,
-Naveen
