1. D80 and D70:
Menu -> Optimize Image ->
"Softer"? Or a combination of custom setting?
sRGB or AdobeRGB?
RAW or Jpg Fine?

SB-800:
Set it on full TTL auto, yes?

Lightsphere:
Keep diffuser dome on except for tall ceilings?
Use appropriate gels while using Lightspere?

Any suggestions?

  2. As Daniel mentioned, Mac OSes -- at least so far in the 3-year-old OS X family -- get

faster with each major revision. Jaguar (10.2) was faster than 10.1, and Panther (10.3) is

faster than all of them. It's a neat perk of using OS X. I also look forward to 64-bit

optimized OS X, so that my G5 will be even snappier.

That's part of the reason Macs have a longer useful life (for everyday people -- I'm not

talking about the odd techie that can make a 486 do 3D modeling).

Old Mac not going as fast as it used to? Upgrade the OS. That's cool.

  3. Ethan my man, where'd you get your numbers?

    Dual 2.5GHz PowerPC G5

    $2,870 configured to match PC

    Dell Precision Workstation 670

    $2,257 configured to match Mac

That's with bare bones OS on the PC: win2000 not XP or XP Pro.

PCs come with 30-day evaluation copies of everything. There will be something like 3 or 4

image editing applications on the PC, none of them worth $20, and all of them expiring or

    self-crippling in a month.

So you'll need anti-virus software, firewall software with the PC for sure. Plus spyware

detection software, like Ad-Aware, which thankfully is free. With the PC you'll get USB2,

which isn't as fast as Firewire, let alone Firewire 800, which comes standard on G5s.

  4. DO NOT BUY CHEAP RAM.

Yes, I shouted that. I read about issues all day on forums, like

mine -- cheap plug here www.appleswitcher.com -- and one thing is clear: OS X is way

more picky about ram quality than OS 9, and G5s are more picky about ram than G4s.

OWC (macsales.com) has good ram. I have no affiliation with them other than having

bought several things from them since 1999.

Let me shout it again, sorry for it but it's necessary:

    DO NOT BUY CHEAP RAM.

  5. As Rob at www.barefeats.com said, the price advantage of the 1.8 is 17%, but also is the

speed disadvantage 17%. So it's a wash, right?

No! Because for the rest of the time you own it, each time you use it, the speed advantage

(read:time savings) of the 2.0 will be 17%. Multiply that by how many times this effect

comes into play over the life of the machine. That can add up into real time, which equals

    real money.

Disclaimer: of course, if you're not taxing the processors 100% at least some of the time

you're doing work, this calculation is useless. It's really a valueable calculation for video

editors who let their machines sit and crunch video for hours at a time, and on the

opposite end of the scale it's not valueable at all, for say web surfers.

  6. I strongly urge you to look at the PowerBook 12"

    Why?

    1. monitor spanning -- when your'e at home or in the office, you can plug in a DVI

monitor and have that much more desktop space, *not a mirror* of your desktop like the

    iBook would give you.

    2. more max ram -- over 1 gig available... iBook can take only 640 officially, although

    newer chips might raise that

    3. G4 chip -- not that big a deal really, despite the buzz... but your Photoshop filter times

will be shorter. The faster bus speed will aid Photoshop too.

    4. smaller -- that 14 isn't exactly small... my wife has a 12" iBook and it's about the upper

limit for what I'd want... but that's just me :-)

    5. same price, or less -- copied straight from Apple.com:

    $1,599.00

    12 PowerBook Combo Drive

    12.1-inch TFT Display

    1024x768 resolution

    1GHz PowerPC G4

    512K L2 cache

    256MB DDR266 SDRAM

    40GB Ultra ATA/100

    NVIDIA GeForce FX

    Go 5200 (32MB DDR)

    Full size keyboard

    10/100BASE-T Ethernet

    FireWire 400

    AirPort Extreme Ready

    Mini-DVI out

  7. How much do you expect to spend, roughly? $4000? That's a ballpark figure. Then how much time will you spend on the project x dollar (yen, mark, peso etc.) per hour (your time is worth something) = the other half of the total cost. So let's say, again, very ballpark, your time comes to another $4000. And the time space is critical too, you say...

$8000 can buy a whole lot of professional scanning, and it's much faster too.

But then you don't end up with a nice Mac at the end ;-) Pros and cons to this :-)

  8. But with a twist: here's what I do --> http://www.photographlink.com/slideshow.php

I have an FM3a and 50mm 1.8 AFD, and most of those were taken with that combo. I

rented a 24mm AIS for a paying job and loved it. Overall it's great to get that

breathing room in the frame. It was very well built and

felt like it could last decades if treated right.

Can you recommend which wideangle you'd get if you took the photos I take?

Thanks, Matt

  9. Arg... that is the pits! Sorry to hear about that. I know how you feel...

This won't make you feel any better I'm sure, but it will help you feel like there's

others who feel you pain -- me!

In 1994 I got hit by a car; I was crossing the street. In 1995 the driver's insurance

company offered $10,000 because I was in physical rehab for my knee. Ok! Later that

    year I bought a Nikon N90, SB25, 35-80mm 4.5-5.6, 80-200 2.8 ED AFD, nice bag

    etc. :-D

1997 -- The Nikon gear and bag got stolen from my apartment, right out of my

closet! Never saw it again. Never had the income again to replace it. No insurance. I

was 25 years old and held crappy, low-paying jobs back then; the Nikon gear was a

gift from up above, and I went wild with it and got some super photos, especially in

    Mexico.

Only now am I piecing my Nikon set back together with a (sorry) FM3a and 50mm 1.8

AFD. I'm glad to have Nikon equipment once again.

BTW, what city do you live in? Just curious.
