"I read all of your responses. It's kind of funny listening to such each of you trot out your personal key points, get into a defensive posture and listen to the next person spout off before coming up with something else."
It's called rebutting, or defending your point, moron.

Whatever you use, please don't put javascript on your page that pops it out to the screen's
max resolution.

I need about ten 11x14 or 16x20 Nielsen black aluminum frames with glass, hardware.
You know, the standard gallery ones. Question: do you have a favorite online store to buy
from with good service/ good prices?
(Or do shipping costs negate web store savings?)
Sorry if this has been hashed/re-hashed. I searched and didn't find anything.

As Daniel mentioned, Mac OSes -- at least so far in the 3-year-old OS X family -- get
faster with each major revision. Jaguar (10.2) was faster than 10.1, and Panther (10.3) is
faster than all of them. It's a neat perk of using OS X. I also look forward to 64-bit
optimized OS X, so that my G5 will be even snappier.
That's part of the reason Macs have a longer useful life (for everyday people -- I'm not
talking about the odd techie that can make a 486 do 3D modeling).
Old Mac not going as fast as it used to? Upgrade the OS. That's cool.
-
Ethan my man, where'd you get your numbers?
Dual 2.5GHz PowerPC G5
$2,870 configured to match PC
Dell Precision Workstation 670
$2,257 configured to match Mac
That's with bare bones OS on the PC: win2000 not XP or XP Pro.
PCs come with 30-day evaluation copies of everything. There will be something like 3 or 4
image editing applications on the PC, none of them worth $20, and all of them expiring or
self-crippling in a month.
So you'll need anti-virus software, firewall software with the PC for sure. Plus spyware
detection software, like Ad-Aware, which thankfully is free. With the PC you'll get USB2,
which isn't as fast as Firewire, let alone Firewire 800, which comes standard on G5s.

DO NOT BUY CHEAP RAM.
Yes, I shouted that. I read about issues all day on forums, like
mine -- cheap plug here www.appleswitcher.com -- and one thing is clear: OS X is way
more picky about ram quality than OS 9, and G5s are more picky about ram than G4s.
OWC (macsales.com) has good ram. I have no affiliation with them other than having
bought several things from them since 1999.
Let me shout it again, sorry for it but it's necessary:
DO NOT BUY CHEAP RAM.

Refurbished PowerMac G5/1.6GHz for $1,299 8:52 am
The factory-refurbished PowerMac G5/1.6GHz with 256MB RAM, 80GB hard drive, and
SuperDrive again costs $1,299 at The Apple Store. It's still the lowest price we've seen for
a G5 system. Shipping is free, although sales tax is added where applicable. A one-year
Apple warranty applies.
-
AND DON'T GET CHEAP RAM. Sorry for shouting, but it's something that should be
shouted, especially for the G5s.
Crucial brand, Kingston brand... but not the generic stuff... unless you enjoy solving kernal
panic problems.
-
Whatever the answer, you have something to look forward to: snappier OS feel (and tests
prove it) with each major OS revision. Beta --> 10.0 --> 10.1 --> 10.2 --> 10.3... each
has improved on the speed of the last.
BTW, G5 single 1.6s and 1.8 as refurbs are flirting with the $1300-1500 range right now.
Great value.
-
As Rob at www.barefeats.com said, the price advantage of the 1.8 is 17%, but also is the
speed disadvantage 17%. So it's a wash, right?
No! Because for the rest of the time you own it, each time you use it, the speed advantage
(read:time savings) of the 2.0 will be 17%. Multiply that by how many times this effect
comes into play over the life of the machine. That can add up into real time, which equals
real money.
Disclaimer: of course, if you're not taxing the processors 100% at least some of the time
you're doing work, this calculation is useless. It's really a valueable calculation for video
editors who let their machines sit and crunch video for hours at a time, and on the
opposite end of the scale it's not valueable at all, for say web surfers.

I rely on the fine Carbon Copy Cloner ($5 shareware) and Disk Utility's Permissions Repair
function.
CCC is an amazing tool -- make a perfect, 100% defragged bootable backup of any drive.

Or recalibrate:
System Prefs --> Displays --> Color --> Calibrate

I strongly urge you to look at the PowerBook 12"
Why?
1. monitor spanning -- when your'e at home or in the office, you can plug in a DVI
monitor and have that much more desktop space, *not a mirror* of your desktop like the
iBook would give you.
2. more max ram -- over 1 gig available... iBook can take only 640 officially, although
newer chips might raise that
3. G4 chip -- not that big a deal really, despite the buzz... but your Photoshop filter times
will be shorter. The faster bus speed will aid Photoshop too.
4. smaller -- that 14 isn't exactly small... my wife has a 12" iBook and it's about the upper
limit for what I'd want... but that's just me :-)
5. same price, or less -- copied straight from Apple.com:
$1,599.00
12 PowerBook Combo Drive
12.1-inch TFT Display
1024x768 resolution
1GHz PowerPC G4
512K L2 cache
256MB DDR266 SDRAM
40GB Ultra ATA/100
NVIDIA GeForce FX
Go 5200 (32MB DDR)
Full size keyboard
10/100BASE-T Ethernet
FireWire 400
AirPort Extreme Ready
Mini-DVI out

How much do you expect to spend, roughly? $4000? That's a ballpark figure. Then how much time will you spend on the project x dollar (yen, mark, peso etc.) per hour (your time is worth something) = the other half of the total cost. So let's say, again, very ballpark, your time comes to another $4000. And the time space is critical too, you say...
$8000 can buy a whole lot of professional scanning, and it's much faster too.
But then you don't end up with a nice Mac at the end ;-) Pros and cons to this :-)
-
Now get an iPod to go along with that Firewire card ;-)
-
How much did you pay for your iOne Display? (Having trouble finding it online).
-
I don't know the answer. All I'm saying is that if millions of 1024x1280 LCD monitors
being sold today all over the world show a square as a rectangle, I'll eat my hat.
-
Gordon, are you saying the the dozens (hundreds?) of different LCD 17, 18 and 19
inch monitors made display a non-square square?
(9 out of 10 monitors in these sizes display at 1024x1280 native resolution)

I need a 5- or 20-pack of Velvia 135. I'm on the West coast,
Seattle, and would rather get it sooner than if from B&H etc.
Love B&H's price, hate the shipping time.

But with a twist: here's what I do --> <a href="http://www.photographlink.com/
slideshow.php">http://www.photographlink.com/slideshow.php</a>
<br><br>
I have an FM3a and 50mm 1.8 AFD, and most of those were taken with that combo. I
rented a 24mm AIS for a paying job and loved it. Overall it's great to get that
breathing room in the frame. It was very well built and
felt like it could last decades if treated right.
<br><br>
Can you recommend which wideangle you'd get if you took the photos I take?
<br><br>Thanks, Matt

Arg... that is the pits! Sorry to hear about that. I know how you feel...
This won't make you feel any better I'm sure, but it will help you feel like there's
others who feel you pain -- me!
In 1994 I got hit by a car; I was crossing the street. In 1995 the driver's insurance
company offered $10,000 because I was in physical rehab for my knee. Ok! Later that
year I bought a Nikon N90, SB25, 35-80mm 4.5-5.6, 80-200 2.8 ED AFD, nice bag
etc. :-D
1997 -- The Nikon gear and bag got stolen from my apartment, right out of my
closet! Never saw it again. Never had the income again to replace it. No insurance. I
was 25 years old and held crappy, low-paying jobs back then; the Nikon gear was a
gift from up above, and I went wild with it and got some super photos, especially in
Mexico.
Only now am I piecing my Nikon set back together with a (sorry) FM3a and 50mm 1.8
AFD. I'm glad to have Nikon equipment once again.
BTW, what city do you live in? Just curious.
