    Arm Chair Traveller

This photograph has all the right elements (camera, travel books, globe, etc) but it's just not working. The lighting is too harsh. You can see that by simply looking at the shadows falling on the globe. Matter-of-fact none of the shadows add anything to the photo. I would redo this photo and soften the lighting a bit. I would even put a soft focus filter on the front of my lens and make the final print in sepia (brown) tone. This would give it a old fashion look to it. I would also get rid of the objects to the far right (candle stick holder and vase?). They don't add anything to the photo. That would give you more room to add more books, rolls of film, maps, airplane tickets, money, passport, travel brochures, or any number of things a traveler might take with them. I know a number of still life photographers who make several changes before they are happy with the final print. I think you are on the right track. You just need to play with the lighting and elements more.
  1. The whole concept of this photograph is rather silly. The aesthetics is none existent. It's an out of focus crotch with a waterfall in the background. So what!! Also the captions are of no value at all and seemed to be written by someone approaching puberty.

A very good photograph. It has all the elements that I like. Interesting clouds, dramatic lighting, the wide view, a foreground that's not wasted.

In other words, "everything comes together" Good job!!

  2. This could be an interesting photo if done right. The lighting is too flat. I would return to this location in the early morning or evening under more flattering light. Even midday when it's partly cloudy, the light breaking through the clouds could be very dramatic. Yes, good lighting diffently would add some dimension to the subject matter.
