1.
More...

A method that works well with Black and White photos and the Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy, Epson Premium Luster Photo Paper, and Ilford Galerie Smoth Pearl is:

    In Photoshop set the color settings to:
Working Spaces
RGB = BJ Color Printer Profile 2000
Gray = Gray Gamma 2.2

Color Management Policies
RGB = Convert to Working RGB
Gray = Convert to Working Gray

Conversion Options
Engine = Adobe (ACE)
Intent = Perceptual or Relative Colorimetric (either one works fine, subjective results)
Use Black Point Compensation & Use Dither are both checked.

    1. When I open a color image I allow Photoshop to convert the image to the working RGB (BJ Color Printer Profile 2000).

2. I also use Channel Mixer or a Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer to do the BW conversion (sometimes I'll convert to LAB mode and use the split the channels to use the Lightness Channel).

3. I do any image adjustments necessary.

4. If I want to tone the image I'll use a Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer with "colorized" checked or better yet, convert to Greyscale -> Dualtone then back to RGB. Print in RGB mode

5. Under "Print Options" I select the Color Management option and set

Source Space = Document: BJ Color Printer Profile 2000
Print Space = Profile: Same As Source

Media Type = High Gloss Photo Film
Print Quality = Custom -> (level 2), diffusion
Color Balance = Yellow -15, Intensity 5

    Color Adjustment = Manual -> Enable ICM

You may also get good results by using:
Media Type = Photo Paper Pro
Print Quality = Custom -> (level 1), diffusion
Color Balance = Yellow -15, Intensity 5

    Color Adjustment = Manual -> Enable ICM

Of course you can tweak the settings to suit your subjective tastes.

Let me know how these options work for you.

  2.
I'm assuming that you are on a Windows PC. Im not sure this method will work for you but, I tested my Canon i850 using a Canon printer profile downloadable here:

    i850 ICC Printer Profile for Matte Photo Paper

    This profile was designed to work with the Lyson inks, but I have found that this does a decent job in printing on the Epson Enhanced Matte and the Canon Matte Photo papers. This works particularly well in removing the green cast on the Epson Enhanced Matte for Black and White photos!

Install the profile, and then assuming your editing images in RGB in Photoshop, you can print using this printer profile. In Photoshop under the Print Options use:

For Print Space use:
Profile = i850_Fotonic_DarkroomMatt.icc
Intent = Perceptual

Under the printer settings use:
Media Type = Matte Photo Paper
Print Quality = Custom -> Level 3 & Diffusion
Color Adjustment = Manual -> Photo

Let me if this works for you.
