Any difference in how it's done? Is it simply screwed onto the rear board in the 4 corners? Or is it more complex than that?
Thanks,
Chris

I've seen complete graflock assemblies on ebay with holder and glass
come up rarely. Would it be possible to simple remove the stock gg
on my Wisner Traditional and screw a graflock on? Then I can use
something like a Horseman 120 film holder. Anyway, just wondering if
this is possible and/or feasible.
Thanks,
Chris

Curious, does making multilple passes on a smaller dry mount press cause lines on the photo at the junction point?

Just on a return trip from France and the Netherlands. France was terrible on tripods, period, lf or 35mm. IE) Denied photographs of the Arc de Trompe' using a tripod! It's centuries old, public domain. But denied. Ridiculous! I plan on writing France's tourism and complaining. And I don't have any plans upon returning anytime soon as a result.
-
Ken, Thanks for the comments and hints on using the Wisner! I appreciate all the hints I can come by lol
For tripod, I have a Gitzo 225 and an Arca Swiss ballhead. I like using the ballhead much better with 35mm, it's a bit hard to level a 4x5 with a ballhead. But heck, it's paid for hehe I'll check out the Reis tripods as alot of people are using them and they do look sturdy as heck.
I also thought the spring back was a bit strong. I've just been pulling back very slowly and carefully as not to disturb composition or focus. A weaker spring would be a good idea.
My biggest concern right now is weight. I'm packing for a trip overseas, and I use a PhotoTrekker backpack. It's stuffed with my 35 and 4x5 systems. Wow is it heavy!lol And I have to carry it as a carryon as to not get stolen or broken. NOW I understand why people are concerned re. weight.lol
Again, Thanks for the thoughts Ken. I too like this camera. I think the only thing I still want is a wide angle lens, and apparantly bag bellows. Otherwise, I too think it'll serve me well.
Take Care,
Chris

LOL! Glad it was helpful Bruce as I was very tentative about asking such a basic question. But this forum has been very helpful and to date, never negative on any of my posts.

Great to hear. I too am off to Amsterdam and Paris next week, along with my new used Wisner 4x5!
As long as on topic, I need, and don't have time to get before departure, a step down ring. Any good photo stores in Amsterdam you guys know of?
-
Ah, found it! Thanks Guys for the help. I never would've found those black marks by myself. As well Ken, Thanks for discussing the neutral positions...good to hear how others work.

I have a Wisner Traditional. New to lf, and am wondering where is
the middle position for the front standard in relation to rise/fall?
The rear has a notch so you know where it's supposed to be. The
front has no notch, so I'm wondering what's the centered position for
the front standard? Or does it not matter? Just guess center, and
adjust the rise/fall in composition? Hope this makes sense.
Thanks

I heard it scratches real easily. You guys have problems with this? How's this film compare to Agfa 25?

I too just went thru this process and research...ordered the Nikon 300M from Badger and awaiting delivery actually. I read past posts from alot of users, but William's post seems to be the most prominent opinion. I went with the Nikon as I shoot mostly landscapes and wanted a lens designed for distance and the multicoating. Otherwise, I would've went with the G-Claron as I saw on a lens test webpage that the G-Claron was sharper by the stats. Note though, I'm a only a beginner shooting 4x5 right now, and would like to learn to use this format proficiently before considering moving up to 8x10...or if I ever do. The Nikon apparantly barely covers 8x10 but should cover it if needed. Both have great resale value so they are equal in this respect. Good luck.
-
I just ordered one, what's the new material Sal mentioned?
-
What topics do you guys like to print on MGIV Warmtone? I just bought my first pack of 8x10 to try out and am not sure 'what' to print on this paper.

Update: I decided and bought a used Wisner Traditional, a couple boards, 180mm CaltarIIN and some film holders. This'll do for a bit:))
Thanks again for the great discussion and suggestions!
Ken, the Technical went for too much, but alas, you can't have everything you'd like lol
-
Great to hear that Kevin. I plan on attending one this coming summer in N. ca. And I too was impressed with his online photos.
-
Going thru the same, and there are used Zone VI's going for $5-600 on ebay. It's about the most affordable large bellows 4x5.
One question about Tech's? What's the scoop with the cams? Do you have to have each camera sent to company for each lens you use on it? Seems very expensive, and a huge negative imo on this camera if true.
-
Thanks for all the responses. I thought of using a can/front extension on something like the Tachi, but apparantly movements are limited. Too bad as there is this today: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2914011631&category=15247
The Canham is too expensive, as well as the Tk45. I'd like to stay below $1000 at most. The Traditional does have 23" of bellows so that's a fair amount and not really sure I need the extra length and cost of the Technical. Here's one for $1k http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2914298361&category=15247
Thanks for the ideas and suggestions! Chris

Hi, I'm in the market for a 4x5 field camera. Unfort. something like
a Tachihara isn't going to work as I want to shoot longer 400-500mm
lenses perhaps in the future and money allows. That leaves alot of
cameras out of contention. The short list seems used Wisner
Traditional, Wista field and the added extension rails(? cost of
these), or some kind of mono like an Sinar F1. I plan on short hikes
at times though with this camera, something to keep in mind. I'd
prefer used if possible. Thanks for any suggestions!

I saw that finally just yesterday Paul! Luckily, a friend had a old one he didn't use off a D2 that fits like a charm in the holes you described, I only need now to buy a $5 red filter from B&H...much better than the $55! Thanks for the response!

Thanks Guys for the help. I guess I like to have one when burning in as well as focusing (focus sheet is a good idea). It's nice to preview the image under the filter to memorize where exactly I have to burn and get in the right position before I hit print.
Anyway, Thanks again!

I upgraded from an Omega B22 that had an under the lens filter
attachment so I could arrange my paper in the easel with paper on it
safely. There's no attachment or filter at all on this D5. Maybe I
adjust the c/y/m somehow? The dichroic head has a lever on the right
side that switches b/w low, high, and white(unfiltered). But no red.
It's a real problem for me not having one. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Chris
-
Thanks alot Al for the quick reply and good answer! I thought they'd be ok and it's good to be assured though.

I just happen to come across some older D2 neg. carriers and I have a
D5 with only one carrier that is perfectly flat. The D2 has either a
flat bracket or 4 tabs attached to one side. I tried it on the D5
and it appears to work, with only a smidgeon of light if you look at
it the right angle. Are these ok to use this way or should I sell
them and look for D5 carriers?
Thanks for looking and I'd think this is a quick answer :)

Not sure the end consensus, is the 650 Logan a decent enough cutter for an amateur photographer or should I just hold off and wait till I can afford either the C&H or Fletcher? Thanks
