    The Oriental Lily

          2

I have some time off from work this week and only one shoot so I

thought I would try something new. Lilies today, maybe magnolias

tomorrow. There seems to be something about close up shots of

flowers that can be very captivating. I think I'll eventually be

    able to capture that...

A fill flash was used, you can see the catch light in her eyes.

And believe it or not this is very natural for her, at least she plays it off as feeling natural.

For this shot, the subject wanted a portrait type shot with an

exotic feel. So for this shot, I approached it much like I would a

swim shot. Put this model in a bathing suit and on the beach and

this same technique would produce incredible swimwear shots.

My question is, would this technique work for more extreme portraits

of everyday people, or should this be reserved for calenders and

    magazine covers?

This was an 8 second exposure at f 5.6, on camera flash with rear sync. The camera has to be set in manual, take a meter reading of the ambient to determine your shutter speed, then meter your flash for your aperture. It's really a lot easier than it looks, but the technique can produce incredible images. Oh, and by "on camera flash" I don't mean a pop-up, you need a flash that has an adjustable output.

I have several other shots from this same spot on the corner, but that roll of film is still being processed, and we're returning Thursday to shoot the same location again with several other ideas in mind. Thanks for the input and keep it coming. I'll post the rest of the slides as soon as I pick them up and have time to scan them.

    The trumpet...

I realize the exposure is a little dark, it's meant to be that way.

The trumpet and top side of the mute were painted with a flashlight,

while the light on the mouthpiece is a single norman flash head.
