I have some time off from work this week and only one shoot so I
thought I would try something new. Lilies today, maybe magnolias
tomorrow. There seems to be something about close up shots of
flowers that can be very captivating. I think I'll eventually be
able to capture that...

For this shot, the subject wanted a portrait type shot with an
exotic feel. So for this shot, I approached it much like I would a
swim shot. Put this model in a bathing suit and on the beach and
this same technique would produce incredible swimwear shots.
My question is, would this technique work for more extreme portraits
of everyday people, or should this be reserved for calenders and
magazine covers?

This was an 8 second exposure at f 5.6, on camera flash with rear sync. The camera has to be set in manual, take a meter reading of the ambient to determine your shutter speed, then meter your flash for your aperture. It's really a lot easier than it looks, but the technique can produce incredible images. Oh, and by "on camera flash" I don't mean a pop-up, you need a flash that has an adjustable output.

I have several other shots from this same spot on the corner, but that roll of film is still being processed, and we're returning Thursday to shoot the same location again with several other ideas in mind. Thanks for the input and keep it coming. I'll post the rest of the slides as soon as I pick them up and have time to scan them.

Yea, the whole frame is tilted it looks like, perhaps some quick adjustments in photoshop could fix it. Thanks for the comment!

I realize the exposure is a little dark, it's meant to be that way.
The trumpet and top side of the mute were painted with a flashlight,
while the light on the mouthpiece is a single norman flash head.

The bottom of the bottle needs some more work in photoshop to bring
the label out a little better, but over all with the lighting and
idea, what do you think?

There is something very compelling about this image! Great composition, and the lighting on his face adds to the mood. Excellent shot!

Comments please... does this draw an emotion or is it to plain?
-
Just in the shadows.

This was the better of several single light shots of this guy,
trying to use light to get an emotion across.

it was a nikkor 135mm i believe. might have been a 150mm. i shot three different product shots with two different lenses, and i can't find my log right now.

Feedback on how to light the front of my background without lighting
my subject would be great! Thanks for looking.

The same image manipulated in photoshop and converted to black and white...

I guess I should have mentioned, the subject is off-centered so copy can be added to the left to finish off the ad. The tilt is intentional to add a bit more flare to the product.

I had an assignment in Studio Lighting class that required me to re-
create several magazine ads, and this one turned out the best... I
think.
