I agree about the need of Raw files to make comparison, but as far as I am concerned, the jpegs I get from my D3
are really impressive (maybe due since it's a 5K$ camera), and it's the first time I can use (sometimes) straight
jpegs out of the camera.
Most part of my pictures are taken in low lights (that's why I've always been using Leica M cameras): I don't
want to blame the M8, I've only said that it has not met my (maybe too high, but I had shelled out 5K$...)
expectations, and that I don't consider it worth its price. Today, I shoot in low light with D3 and Zeiss ZF
50/1.4 (great lens) at 1600 or even 3200 iso, with good results similar (similar, not equal) to 400 iso BW film
(after proper conversion). With the M8 I've never been able to get past iso 640 to have a satisfying result, and
a Summilux 35/1.4 (to roughly match the 50mm focal length) is a nightmare of an expense (also secondhand). And,
as I said in my previous post, the M8 makes a sound far louder than my previous M7, and closer (even if
different) to the D3)...

I've been using Leicas (M3, M4, M6, M7) toghether with Nikons (F2, F3, FM2, F5) for many years when shooting
film. Have loved the Leica M lenses for their quality and feel. Some of them are, I think unsurpassable, like the
Noctilux or the Summilux 35/1.4 aspherical. But it was not only the lenses, it was the whole M system that was
great. Being able to shoot unnoticed, silently, in very dim light could be unique. On the other side I've always
loved Nikons and Nikon lenses as well: I now shoot with a Nikon D3 and a mix of new and old Nikon lenses, plus
some Zeiss ZF, and am happy with it.
Indeed one year ago I bought an M8, believing I could use it as I was using my M6: I sold it after few months,
completely dissatisfied for at least three reasons:
1) it's noisy, expecially for that hateful bzzz when the shutter is cocked.
2) poor overall image quality when compared to cameras that cost less (Canon 5D, Nikon D300, ecc.)
3) complex in use, unreliable, and not dependable upon (weird colors, need of Uv filter, unreliable white
balance, ecc.)
Some of the complains could be lessened if it costed one third of its price, but anyway it is not what I need.
I'm also sure that the first one (Zeiss?) that comes out with a rangefinder costing less than $ 2500 and using M
mount lenses, with 12MP and quality comparable to D300 or 40D will have success.

Followed Mark instructions: copied the application folder in the applications and double clicked. EOS Viewer utility opens, but it seems to have most commands inactive. Tried the same for EOS capture, but when I launch the software it doesn't open. Thus when I connect the camera I can't download the images on my PB...

I've tried to copy the CD in the hard disk and install from there. Same as before: doesn't
install, and same message. It happens the same for EOS Capture, while Photostich has
been successfully installed from the CD at the first attempt.

I've just bought a Canon EOS 20D but can't install EOS Ultility Viewer 1.1 software on my
Apple Powerbook with OSX 10.3.5
When I launch the installer it opens a window stating "Cheking files on the local disk" and
stops there.
canon support center has told me that "sorry it is not a message originating from the CD,
it's probably an internal conflict, so we can't help....." (great example of customer care!).
Has anyone a clue? I have Photoshop CS installed, if this can help.

I've just got a Goerz 10 3/4 Dagor lens. It has an odd filter
thread, something like 2" (51cm approx.). Are those filters or step
up rings available somewhere?

Once upon a time.... (it was last month) I've gone for a photographic weekend with a friend.
My backpack: Canham 8x10 metal, 3 lenses (Super Symmar 150XL, Apo Symmar 240, Nikkor 450M), 3 film holders, dark cloth, changing bag and a box of 25 sheets of TMX.
His backpack: 2 Nikon F5, 1 Nikon FM2, 5 lenses (17-35/2.8, 28-70/2.8, 80-200/2.8, 60/2.8 macro, 300/4), flash, 20 rolls of film.
All other things being equal (lightmeter, Gitzo carbon fibre tripod and head, etc.), guess which backpack was heavier?

Sure many of the things I've seen here are right abuot risks in buying on ebay and the real deals being a few. But I want to contribute a different point of wiew: for all you fond of LF and living in the US, finding the gear you need is easy. In Europe, and expecially in Italy where I live, LF photography is completely unknown: to buy a box of 8x10 film could need two months waiting and a price double than B&H. Ebay is a good chance to find used stuff at fair (at least for us) prices with the possibility to see what you are buying. By the way my Canham I've bought it new at Badger Graphics (payed 20% less than the best price in Europe), but I've found many good lenses on ebay at one third of the price it would have costed here. I too have thrown away 500$ in a Leica M3 (mi first bid!)that was mint as advertised except for the fact that there wasn't anymore the rangefinder in it, but if I make the balance of all the things bought (after then I've become more cautious) this is anyway positive...

buying I need advices on which camera to choose: Canham 8x10, metal
or wood?

I have the new 50CFi, and have the possibility to buy a second hand
40676 Pro Shade. I'm wandering if it fits the lens or if it will
cause vignetting. Does anyone tried it?

I've read of very good results exposing HP5 plus at ISO 200 and
developing in Perceptol 1+3 for 12.5 minutes at 20 °C. Ilford doesn't
provide info on this, and I'm not sure of the time/temperature
values. Has anyone tried anything similar?
