1.
Many thanks again for the responses. I have decided to use 32GB cards & using D3's second CF slot to keep a back up. If this get full I will store some images in my WD portable drive using the hotel's computer. Eventually I will get a Colorspace UDMA Hyperdrive. B & H was out of stock recently so I could not buy it before the trip.

  2.
We are planning a trip to Italy. Just wanted to check which insurance company offers personalised cover for expensive photographic equipment in UK to travel Europe? I know State Farm insurance in USA offers this to USA residents, but it does not provide cover for non-residents. Any tips? Many thanks in advance.

  3.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I agree my primary lens is gonna be the 24-70 which is also my mostly used lens at the moment. I have a WD portable hard drive, may be I could use it to back up the images by using a hotel computer. I am also planning to take 1 or 2, 16 or 32GB CF cards as well on top of my usual set of 8GB cards.

  4.
Hello,
We are planning to travel to Italy in June. Will spend a few nights in Rome, Florence & Venice. I will be taking my Nikon D3, 24-70, 70-300 & may be 17-35 or 28/1.4. I would be grateful for any particular tips? Also keen to know how to store the images? I used to store in my laptop but now not keen to take it because of airline regulations. Many thanks in advance. Cheers, Cham

  5. I am sure this is discussed some stage.

The leading CF card are from SanDisk & Lexar. They have 8G & 16G cards. What is

the optimum CF card for D3? This is for general photography including candids,

portraits, landscapes. I am not a sports photographer.

  6. Many thanks for all the help. In the past I have bought many film SLR & lenses from Man Shing Photo Supplies, Mongkok. Very reliable and they even took a phone order from me to pre-order a 500mm AFS!!!
  7. I have decided to buy a D3. My mainline of photography is portraits, landscapes

& available light photography. I live in Australia & planning to buy it from

Hong Kong as it is significantly cheaper ~ USD 1750.00. The problem is that the

warranty is not valid in Australia. Unlike in USA, Nikon Australia will repair

it if required but the buyer will have to pay. I am thinking of getting a Mack

warranty. What experience do you have with Mack warranties?

  8. I have decided to buy a D3. My mainline of photography is portraits, landscapes

& available light photography. So far I have decided on a RRS QR plate (the

standard non-L), Lexar UDMA 8GB card (x2), Extra battery as accessories. Could

you please suggest me other must have accessories (not lenses/ flashes) for a

    D3?

  9. The Item 320223709475 on eBay has been there for many many months. He has been trying to sell it for a while. Obviously it is way over priced!!! I am actually looking for a 55mm UMN myself. The value IMHO is mainly collectibility rather than any actual use in practical day to day photography.

I agree with listing on eBay. It will get the value for it or more if you are lucky if there are any crazy people with too much cash.

  10. Many thanks for all the responses. I agree with Shun, Jose & Justin. The 14-24 is a bit too wide. I have owned the 17-35/2.8 and I loved it. It was one of my favourites besides the 70-200/2.8. I did not like the 28-70/2.8 as it was not wide enough. May be I should consider 24-70/2.8 at a later stage.

I think I will go ahead with the 17-35/2.8 to cover my wideangle needs. If required I will keep my 15/3.5. Also I do own the 13/5.6 & the 8/2.8 if I am desperate!!!

  11. I am a keen on landscape photography & portraits. I especially love the use of

wideangle lenses. I am planning to get a D3 for the same reason as it is the

only full frame digital available at this stage. Please help me decide between

    the following combination:-

    1) 17-35/2.8 with 15/3.5 AIS for wider views. The advantages include flare

resistant 17-35/2.8 with the possibility to use neutral grad filters. 15mm lens

is excellent for architecture as distortion is well controlled. The downside is

it is a combo, 15/3.5 flares & it is manual focus. Also the 17-35/2.8 is not as

good in the 17mm range in comparison.

    2) 14-24/2.8G. The advantage is that it has perfect reviews for optical quality

& has the latest technology (Nanocrystal!!!!!). Whether it is helpful is a

different question. The problem with this lens is filters cannot be used & not

as flare resistant as the venerable 17-35/2.8.

Please help me dicide between the 2 choices with reasons to justify each option.

  12. Instead of 14-24/2.8 what do you think of 17-35/2.8 with a 15/3.5 lens? The advantage of this combo is that it will be a cheaper combo if you already own one of them. Also the 15/3.5 has better control of barrel distortion especially if shooting architecture & can use graduated filters etc with the 17-35/2.8. What are the opinions on this?
  13. Many thanks for the very quick respenses. The reason I selected D3 is because it is the only Nikon DSLR with a full frame eventhough it is far too expensive. I prefer to have the full frame hence the reason not buying a DLSR so far. Should I also consider D300?

May be I should get the D3 and then think about the extra lenses. Financially this is more favourable as well. Also I do have 15/3.5 & 8/2.8 if I needed anything wider than the 17-35/2.8.

  14. I am interested in buying a D3. I am an amateur photographer mainly interested

in landscape, travel & portrait photograpahy. Until now I have used F5. Also I

have FM3a & F3HP. I only use manual lenses with them. With my F5 the most

commonly used zooms were 17-35/2.8 & 70-200/2.8 lenses. The 17-35/2.8 is my

favourite lens so far. I did not use my 28-70/2.8 or 35-70/2.8 so I sold them.

As we know there are 2 new zooms 24-70/2.8 & 14-24/2.8. Which zooms should I

use with a D3? I am tempted to buy them both & sell my favourite 17-35/2.8 to

fund them. I am not sure whether I might regret this as the 17-35 range is very

popular & previously I did not use much of the 28-70 range. But the new zoom is

more versatile as it covers 24-70!!! And for superwides I can use the 14-24. I

would appreciate suggestions & rationale behind.

  15. I have had 3 NOCT AIS lenses and all had great optical quality. Never owned an AI version as yet. If the focusing throw is longer as Bjorn says it would be precisely focused easier. However my intention is if I ever purchase it is purely for collection so that is not relevant.
  16. Many thanks for the quick responses. I have had 3 of the AIS lenses. I have sold 2 of them and got a sample for my self. It is perfect apart from not having the boxes or warranty card.

As Roland mentioned the AI version should be more collectible than the AIS version just from the rarity. But people seem to collect the AIS version. I could not understand the logic behind it. Please do not ask the logic behind collecting itself!!!!

I have access to a NIB AI lens, I am trying to justify buying it.

  17. As you know there are 2 versions of this lens, AI & AIS. For usage I suspect it

would be the AIS version because of the newer coatings etc.

Just wanted to check which version is more collectible?
