  1. Sorry to hear about your bad experiences, but I doubt the hospital scenario is the reason. I've heard the story of delayed work and lack of communication too many times. Fortunately my dealings with him were nothing more than a nuisance, as I (finally) received my hardware purchase.

For what it's worth, I, and many others, have had great results with Steve Swearingen (steven40 at aol dot com) at Camera Clinic in Reno, NV. I have no financial or personal interest in his services, just a satisfied customer. Reasonable prices, quality work, and quick turnaround times.

  2. If you plan to get into modeling/fashion, don't forget Miami. Lots of culture here as well since it seems to be a high traffic point for a lot of folks coming in from south of the border. We don't have to shovel snow in the winter either! You can do outdoor photography all year round (except when it's raining).
  3. If you make it up by Bartlesville, there's a place called Woolaroc outside of town, heading toward Barnsdall on 123. It's a private game reserve (http://www.woolaroc.org) setup by Frank Phillips (of Phillips 66 petroleum). Lots of other things to visit as well. Drop me an email if you're interested. I grew up around there and can offer some other suggestions depending on your tastes.
  4. Actually, right now is the time to be doing Everglades visits. There really aren't any mosquitos during the day. Maybe a few shortly after sunrise, and then about 30 minutes after sunset. Aside from that, I have no complaints. I spent 4 days out there about a week before Christmas. It was great. I was in Key West last week... usually the same with mosquitos. None! If you're looking for doing some bird shots, my 300mm is barely enough. They tend to shy away from people. I often use my 300/4 and a 2x TC on my F1N or T90, but I still want a longer lens for the birds... enjoy your trip!

p.s. Consider your N80. If you don't use it, what's the point of owning it?

  5. Tim,

I'm not familiar with Minolta's various mounts, as I'm a Canon FD owner. I was recently in a local shop and saw a Canon/Minolta mount which allows Minolta mount on FD bodies. Which mount? I have no idea. Call and ask:

  6. Steve, what a part/model number is your charger? I got it without charger or cable. I just got the 'household to PC' cable the other day. I connected it to the PC socket on my FTb and F-1N. They both fire it. I'm waiting for the battery pack to come back. It was sent out for 'repacking'. My spare is a wet cell (and I think it's almost dead), but the one I sent out will be a nicad when it comes home. I was planning on building a charger, but if I could find what the stock one was, I'd like to get one of those. I'll be experimenting with it over the holidays. I just have to get rid of this pager. Being on call is not conducive to enjoying hobbies!
  7. Let's not forget to mention The Everglades. Personally, I'd recommend spring or fall. I live here, so I can attest to the summer heat/humidity. The winter isn't bad, but spring and fall are when the animals are most active. The bird watchers go nuts over it. There is also plenty of other wildlife and scenery to shoot, as well as peace and quiet to enjoy away from the rat race.<div>005lI6-14078884.thumb.JPG.01af7c87e700ed77996a30eeeb93d80f.JPG</div>
  8. I'm going out on a limb and will assume that the A-1 has the same feature as my F-1N (since it's based on the A series)... if you want to save on batteries, remove it for your extended exposure shots. My F-1N works without the battery in it. Keep in mind, it doesn't play nice if the battery is dead and still installed. It needs to be removed completely, as I understand it. I have batteries for it, but I never use it. The F-1N is my backup (strictly mechanical) and I use the T70 when I'm feeling lazy and want power. FWIW, not all exposure times are available without the battery. My F-1N denotes them by different colors on the dial.

  9. Also look at Jupiter lighthouse. It's on the north end of Palm Beach County, but it's just a short drive south of Port St. Lucie. Lots of history... and if you're willing to spend the $5, you can go up inside and go to the top. The Crab House, right across the inlet, has pretty good food and they make an awesome bloody mary, complete with jumbo shrimp hanging from the side of the glass!
  10. I live in the Ft. Lauderdale area, so please correct me if I'm wrong. Didn't they recently close down Fairchild Tropical Garden in order to move it to Watson Island by South Beach? Or was that Parrot Jungle?

  11. I recently picked up a used F-1N (S/N#177xxx). I was told by a friend

that if I can find a "screw-in type cable for shutter release" that

it should work. He claims they're all pretty much standard for the

most part. Is this true? It screws on to the button, but doesn't

work. The cable itself does it's job, and the button works, but it

appears that there is no separation between the outer button and

whatever is inside it that the cable should be pushing into. Any

pointers on where I should go with this? Thanks in advance.
