I would second the recommendation for the Gitzo 1325 and 1370 low profile head. It is light and gets low to the ground. I use it with an RW45 Ebony and find that I really like this combination. Its probably not that cheap but you'll never buy another. As for the twist locks I have not had any problems - don't try to cinch them that tight - just a moderate amount and they will not move or loosen up - then they will not bind. Buying something that only addresses some of your requirements will lead to frustration. If your equipment needs are solved you'll have lots of time to devote to the creativity side which is where you want to be - right?

Does Photo.net have (maintain) averages of all photos rated on the

My son and I are planning a road trip from central Minnesota to
Santa Cruz CA starting about August 5 and will have to return by
about Sept 1st. He just got his drivers permit so is eager to drive.
I look at this as a great opportunity for both of us to see the
country and especially for him to expand his horizons. Aaron is not
a typical teen. He is focused, mature, patient and very articulate,
displaying attributes far beyond his 15 years. So I want this trip
to be more than sight seeing instead focused on fostering an
understanding of the development of the US and an appreciation for
what makes the USA such a great country. I am leaning towards a trip
on roads less traveled and sights that are off the mainstream even
at the risk that we run out of time and have to make a fast trip
back, quality is in the details. I post here because I know there
are many members of this forum can point me to these places. Me - I
am along to document with cameras from P&S, digital SLR and 4X5. Any
and all contributions are welcome and appreciated

I listened to a radio broadcast about Lake Superior and the speaker
made reference to a long strech of sand dunes on the Lake Superior
shore line in Minnesota. Does anyone know about this - photogenic or
not? Thanks for your answer.

Craig, I have been studying this as well and just wanted to add that this is probably the best summary I have seen. Job well done!

Sounds like your new to LF. This happened to me when I started. But it got better the more time I spent under the dark cloth.

I had a sheet jamb in my 545 holder. So I consulted the user guide.
When I removed the the frame panel one of the small cross-pieces
fell out. It is metal shaped like a v about 4 1/2 inches long and
about 3/8's of an inch wide. There is another piece of the same dims
which is placed nearest the roller side. But I do not know where it
fits in the holder. (I failed the quiz on the book Zen and
Motorcycle Maintenance) Can someone help please?

I would second the recommendation of Photoshop 7 Artistry by Barry Haynes. He was going to publish another book specificly for photographers. I just do not know if it has been published yet.

I seem to be having difficulty composing the image on the ground
glass. I view the image about ten inches away and its like I
don't "see" the picture. Is this a matter of practice or experience
or approach? Can you describe your technique or approach to
composition as you moved from beginner to sucess. I have a frame
viewer which helps to a certain degree but would like to benefit
from the years of experience that many of the LF photographers at
this forum have. Thank you. Michael

Aaron - you could also look at this review http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/software/archive-creator.shtml
I also believe it is relatively cheap as compared to the other posts here. I have not used this as my work has'nt the need yet.

Thanks for all the responses. I went with the Gitzo 1325 and Gitzo 1370M Pan Tilt head - I liked the low profile. Bought from Jeff at Badger Graphics - he is the best. This will replace my Husky Quick Set.

Beautiful and original photography. The quality of your images are of the highest standards I have seen; I would love to see originals alas I cannot afford one.

I am looking for recommendations (model) for a Gitzo carbon fiber
tripod and which ballhead for an Ebony RW45. I do mostly landscapes
which require walking 5-15 miles (day trip). Largest lens is 300mm.
I pack my gear in a LowePro PhotoTrekker. I want stability and be
able to shoot low to the ground. Are spiked feet important? I some
times shoot from rock. Thanks for any responses. Cheers.

In his book Alternative Photographic Processes Christopher James describes making aa unltraviolet expousure unit which cost less than the commercial units that are available. www.bostick_sullivan.com sells the book. James also lists other sites for the lights themselves. Michael Hiltner

I just bought my first LF camera - an Ebony RW45 - a great camera. I
want to make contact prints but do not have an enlarger. Question is
what can I use for a light source and how do I determine expousure
time other than a test strip? Is easel best way to hold the
negative? I have reading a lot of the postings - thanks for the
education and response. Michael
