As already said, to see the ears of the dog would have been nice to see. I personally would have liked to see the eyes of the (confused?) horse too. Though, I don't know if latter would have "killed" the photo. - Nice shot!

He really looks like a gentleman.

Very sharp picture, I like the DOF that actually just covers from the nose of the donkey to the back of the cart. I'm not quite sure about the red front signs, they have an attracting and a distracting effect at the same time.

    Hi Tom,

    nice cat!

Just some ideas that went through my mind:

    - light on the left side of the picture is too harsh (maybe frontal fill-flash would have helped here)

    - I have the impression, that the nose is sharper than the eyes (since you're close to the cat, go safe and stop your lens down, e.g. f/4 -> f/5.6 -> f/8; the DOF varies then between aprox. 7 cm (=2.8") and 15 cm (=5.9"))

    - the photo doesn't look very sharp (it can be a scanning issue, try to use a stronger "unsharp mask" in PS); for this kind of portrait, maybe a slower film (ISO 50/ ISO 100) would be better too

    - the view angle looks strange to me, maybe a frontal or lateral portrait would have been nicer

    - the posted image size is difficult to view (I'm using a 19"@1280x1024 and I still don't see the whole photo in "medium size")

    Happy shooting!

Yes, you are right. The other photo is a portrait of my wife being completely sceptical about Charlie's (the dog of my parents, 18 months old) love for wood sticks. This one is was taken maybe 15 minutes later. In this situation, my wife was holding a wood stick and he was holding on to catch it (btw, he didn't wait too long ;) )
