1.
So basically you just admited on a public forum that you've been illegallly working in the US and this is the first time it's going to bite you in the arse?

We're supposed to feel sorry for you and you want to blame someone else and bill the client for your foolishness?

Did I miss something?

 2.
What's the best camera?
What's the best lens?
Whats the best shutter speed?
Whats the best.....

There isn't one best. If everything thing in photography was black and white and one setting for everything it wouldn't be an art.

 3.
A first for me. Instead of a signature mat they want a signature book made of their engagement photo's. Has anyone had one printed? If so, where?

The album companies that I'm thinking of all have glossy or sprayed surfaces that seems to me would not do well for writing on.

Any thoughts or links would be appreciated.

 4.
I NEVER talk about a shot list with the couple. If the wan to give me one;
1. I will try to get the shots they request but can not guarantee it. I have no control on how the day will go, what will happen, etc....
2. I ask that they keep it to "Must Have" shots. Typically those are the same shots I make sure I get any way.

 5.
A Nikon flash can survive. I dropped my SB-800 in the lake. Immediate grabbed it and took out the batteries. Let it dry out for a couple days before putting the battery back in. Still works to this day, well over a year later.

 6.
A year is too long? Are you serious? I
It takes nothing as far as resources both physically and economically to keep files forever.

With that said, if it's a CD, just send it. It'll take you 10 minutes and $10 to burn and mail a CD.
Prints, that's another story. You can't be shelling out money for extras. It costs you money. If they don't have insurance or something maybe offer to replace them at a discounted price. Not that I'm a cold heartless Bast... but you can't take a loss due to other peoples misfortunes. You can do the discounted rate if need be and still be a hero.
It really depends on the situation. For one situation it may be charge full price. For another the discount. For one it maybe bending over backwards for them for free. It really depends.

 7.
Get rid of hours. I do full day packages. I try to keep it under 10 hours though. It eliminates those awkard moments where things don't go as planed and run late.

With that said; I do have 4 hour package, and it's 4 hours PERIOD! If they want to be budget contious then I am more then happy to work with them. They will not take me for a ride and sign up for 4 hours then the day of think they can get 6.
There's always the fine line of providing good customer service and getting taken advantage of. There is no one right answer. It really depends on the circumstance and the client. You really need to take each and every situation separately. Was it poor planing? Clients that just don't seem to care/respect their vendors? Or was it just one of those things where things ran late? The first two I'm less apt to help.
You also need to learn how to use the DJ to get things moving. They can really help you out a lot of the time in these situations.

 8.
If you put them online PEOPLE WILL COPY THEM AND REPOST THEM. Either live with it or don't do it. They should be small low resolution files then wouldn't even print a decent wallet.
Watermark them so when they do go out you're at least getting a little advertising.

 9.
If you are doing a TF you haven't "Hired" anyone.
Say no. It's that simple. She can tell you no on what she wears, or doesn't, what poses she's comfortable doing; just as you have the right to give her a file you find acceptable.
This stuff should be discussed before the shoot.

 10.

So what happens if you cash the check and don't forward the extra funds?

Seriously? No wonder these scams work. You'll pay the NSF charges! Duh! Do you think these checks are actually real?

Come on people. Let's use some common sense here.

 11.
YES!!!
Is everything free? Do they get as many prints they want for free? Free CD with all the images that they can have printed elsewhere?
Unless you are giving up all rights to the images you take you need to have a contract, agreement, what ever you want to call it WRITTEN and signed by both of you. This way both parties understand EXACTLY what they are doing and getting.

 12.
Having to smile in a portrait went out with film!

Seriously, I hate when I'm doing a senior portrait session and the mother is behind me yelling at their kid "SMILE" for every shot.
Nothing is worse then a forced cheesy smile.
Listen to your client and what they want. It's also your job as an artist to try to throw in a few "different" shots for them to see as well. Worse case scenario, they don't order those. You could also turn out to be a hero!

 13.
Quality, not quantity. Know what you are shooting, don't shoot for the sake of shooting. Let's do the math. I see some photographer saying 1500-2000 images in a day. Lets take 1500 images over 8 hours. That's over 1 image every 20 seconds!!! No one in their right mind can say that they are producing quality images when shooting like that.

Who in really wants 1500+ images? On paper is sounds great, but in reality it becomes a nightmare for everyone involved.
