I love the pre-ASPH Summicron 90/2. It's a bit heavy but handles very well. It also has enough inertia to allow for very slow shutter speeds without too much shake. See the following for a natural low light portrait. F2 at 1/15 sec.

I'd highly recomend FOTOROMA in Via di Monteverde, 7/G tel. 06 5344764, surely one of the best in town. Ask for Riccardo Scoma, he has lots of professional equipment (Leica, Rollei, Hasselblad, Mamiya, Nikon, Canon ecc), both new and used. He is also keen on swapping good used equipment, and it's a place where all the professionals hang out.I bought most of my Leica stuff there and the prices seem OK.

Just one more thing: leave your credit card at home, then you won't be tempted to buy the whole shop :-)

Classic and a 24mm ASPH. Thanks to Roger Michel for the idea of the

shootout, I really enjoyed walking around near St Peter's looking

Thanks to everyone for helping me out on this one. I too would have said "something around 100", what puzzles me is that I didn't own such a focal length in those days. I had an Edixa manual screw mount reflex with a 35 and a 50 mm Schneider. I also had (and actually still have) a 240mm Enna tele-enna f4.5, however that would seem to be too strong for those pictures, although the out of focus of the first picture could well be due to a stronger focal length even at the relatively high (by modern standards) f-stop of 4.5.

The only other possibility would be that I may have used a focal doubler on the 50mm turning it into a 100mm, but I doubt that, I hardly ever used it.

Today I'd probably do those kind of pictures with a tele-elmarit 90/2.8 (for it's compactess) or else with the Summicron 90/2.

This morning however, I tried street shooting with a 24 ASPH, it's wonderful, you get really close to people, cannot wait to get the chromes developed tomorrow.

While getting ready for the street shoot out I looked at some old

negatives that I made in the late sixties in Rome. I'm having a hard

time figuring out (remembering) which focal length I used for these

shots. Anyone care to help me?<div></div>

I recently found an old Paterson negative binder with FP4 and HP5

negs exposed in the late sixties. Unfortunately the negs are in a

pretty bad state. They are not only covered by dust, but also contain

tiny sticky particles that cannot be blown away with canned air, or

by brush. Also on the emulsion side there are signs of some sort of

mineral deposit, perhaps due to developing chemicals not completely

washed away. When scanned on a 4000ED this shows up as a crackelé

effect with ofcourse all the spots due to the small particles.

So the question is, is it possible to wash the negs, and if yes, what

would be the best way to do this and with what liquids?
