The same thing has recently happened to my D700. I may have to send it in.

Had the Nikon 80-400, brought it back the next day. Way too slow for wildlife or birds. Now use the 300 F4 with the 1.4X. The 1.7X is pushing it.

With the lenses you already have the D700 would be perfect. The D700 has almost exactly the same menus and setup as the D300. It is slightly bigger, but feels the same to me. As said, you may have to add a little more cash. I have this combo and very similar lenses. I think you would be very happy as I am.

Actually the saying is "Improvise, Adapt, and Overcome" ...

I use the 1.4 and 1.7 TC on my 70-200. Pretty good results. The 2x TC is pushing it.

I upgraded in a moment of weakness. Can't really see a quality improvement. The V1 seemed so much lighter and more comfortable to handhold. Stay with your current version and spend the money on something else.

The two workhorses on my D700 ... the 17-35 F2.8 and the 24-70 F2.8. Two great lenses and perfect for landscapes.

The 24-85mm F2.8-4.0 is a great travel or walk around lens. Super on the D700. Good quality, well made, even has a macro setting. Hard to find used, but I picked up an E+ copy for $400.

Peter Hawking couldn't have explained it better. After this advice, I think he smashed that D5000 on his forehead. Now he can only see with shallow DOF.

Hi Jax. Seems like you've done your homework. I had the Nikon 80-400mm and returned it the next day. Definitely way too slow for birds. I currently shoot with the Nikon 300 F4 and the 1.4 extender. Pretty good, but have to use a tripod as my hands are not that steady and lack of VR. I have played with the Sigma 120-400mm. Although it needs more light and is probably not quite as sharp as the Nikon 300 F4, it has VR, versatility, reasonable price, and is great for handholding. I may pick one up for walking through the woods ... Ray.

Thanks, Mike. The smudges were definitely in the lens. I went to my local camera shop and tried a new 24-70mm. At the same settings there were no smudges. Came home and gave the rear element a good cleaning with a rocket blower. Must have dislodged it ... no more smudge spots. Also used the rocket blower on the sensor. Got rid of 95% of the dust spots on the sensor. I can live with a the couple of remaining ones. Just glad, I didn't have to send the lens for cleaning. Can't bear to be without this lens for any length of time. It's my workhorse. Thanks to all ... Ray.

Hi Janne. The two shots were shot at different MM. One at 35 the second at 50. That would probably explain the slight location change. Thanks for all the responses. I'll let you know what happens at the local camera store when I try a different 24-70mm lens.

In my first post I meant F22, not 22mm. The lens is about 1 year old. Just showed up recently. I also took some shots with my 17-35mm, same F stop (22) and same MM (35) ... no smudge. Also used my 50mm, and 70-200mm at F22 ... no smudge. Of course I couldn't use the same MM on these lenses. Tomorrow, I'll stop by The Photo Center and try using another 24-70mm lens.

Is it possible to only show on one lens if all were shot at the same settings?

I have a smudge on my Nikon 24-70mm F2.8 lens. It is not the sensor, it only appears with this lens. All my other lenses are clear. Upon checking this lens, I do see some dust on the screw in side. To me this doesn't look like a dust spot and normally dust in the lens doesn't affect the image. Just wondering if this could be the dust spot showing up like a smug. Only appears at 22mm, but I shoot landscapes at this range most of the time. Suggestions and thanks ... Ray.
