Help!

 

A school recently approached me and asked me to do their school

portraits. The other local schools were using a photographer who

gave key chains and bookmarks with a picture on it. They wanted me

to do the same. Do you know how I can go about doing that? I have

the option of shooting film or digital.

Unfortunately, 8X10 is my total space, unless I change my arrangement. This will clutter the room a bit more, but then I can be as large as 8 X 12. Originally, I was planning to use the 10 for the people, and the 8 for the distance between us. I can use the 8 for the people, and then I can actually go as far back as 12. Once again, this is total distance.

I have been working as a photojournalist for quite a wile, and am

looking to get into portrait photography. What are the basics that I

will need? Should I avoid buying used? Any specific brands you

suggest? What power lights?

 

From my readings, it would seem that I need the following:

1 main light (+ light stand)

1 gill light

1 back light

1 hair light

 

a power pack

 

a backdrop

 

a light meter

 

some props

 

Anything else? Should I get umbrellas or soft boxes? Any good books

with time tested set ups?

 

BTW - I will be building the studio in my apartment. This means low

ceilings and not too much room (the ceiling is 8 ft high, and I will

have a total floor space of about 8 ft X 10 ft) .

I am not familiar with the Metz flash system. However, I do use the F100 & SB-80DX combo. What I can tell you is that I did this because I often use the flash as a �fill flash�. It is in these situations where it is especially important for the camera and flash to be able to communicate properly. When I company like Metz puts out a flash. I don�t think Nikon reveals to them the method in which the camera's electronics works. Thus, they may not be able to do as good a job as Nikon.

Everyone has been replying to me that it is not supposed to be a fill light. (Thank you for the help!!!)

When I bought the flash, I was told that that the SB-80DX is supposed to have some sort of fill light to help when using bounce flash.

I guess they were wrong. (or maybe they were referring to the built in bounce card?)

As for the IR, is there any way I can check if it is working properly? (In my Minolta, I could actually see the IR light)

TROUBLE WITH Nikon SB-80DX FILL LIGHT (it doesn't turn on)

 

I bought the SB-80DX in July. Since the day I bought it, I don�t

think the little "fill light" ever worked. When you use bounce flash,

the fill light is supposed to go on to help fill the eye sockets.

However, it never seems to go on. The same light is supposed to be an

AF assist light. Even in dark situations, it never turns on (yes, I

checked that it put it in "AF-ILUM" mode). However, when I sup the

camera on red eye mode, the light does turn on.

This means that the light bulb is fine, just it doesn't turn on when

it's supposed to.

 

On Friday, I went to B&H and showed it to the guy there. He

said "yeah, its known to do that." He suggested I send it in to Nikon

USA to be repaired, but I'm scared to do that since they'll probably

send me a refurbished one.

 

Any advice?

PROBLEM WITH COLOR TEMPERATURE WHEN SHOOTING WITH FLASH AT SUNSET?

 

 

Philip Greenspun writes " If you use electronic flash closer to

sunset or sunrise, when sunlight is redder, objects illuminated by

the flash will look unnaturally cold" (the article is on photo.net at

I often shoot at sunset, with fill flash. I haven't experienced this

problem, or maybe I just don�t SEE that "unnaturally cold" look. Any

of you have experience with this?

 

Below is a picture of my friend's daughter. I took it towards sunset.

I used both a reflector, and fill flash. I don't see that problem in

this picture. (maybe that's because I used a reflector?)

I shoot with a F100 and SB-80DX. I generally place my subjects in the

center of the frame (since this is where most of the light and

focusing sensors are), lock focusing and exposure, and then recompose

my image with my subject off center (thus obeying the rule of thirds).

 

Will the TTL flash know to give proper exposure to my subject which

is now off center, or will it try to give proper exposure to what

ever is in the center, since it still thinks that that is where my

subject is? If it does, is there any way of getting around this

problem?

I am looking to purchase a flash bracket. I am considering something

like the Stroboframe Quick Flip (model 350). The frame has an arm

that you can move to keep the flash on top of the camera at all

times. However, being a right handed, I like having my right hand on

top, and my left hand on the bottom, when shooting vertically. With

the construction of the flash bracket this would place the flash

UNDER the camera.

 

The only solution is to have your left hand on top, and your right

hand on the bottom. This is very unnatural.

 

Are you familiar with this problem? Do you know of any solutions?

I have teh 28-105 and love it. it's a great lens. it also has "macro" ability.

in your queston you mention the 24-85 is a "G". later you state it is a "S". nikon has 3 levels G, D, S. G is the worst and S is the best. if the 24-85 is a G, then go with the 28-105.
