    Good Job

I always forget to look for shots like this when I'm out shooting skateboarding (always looking for that magazine cover/action shot). This photo makes me want to get out and skate. It reminds me of the chapped and grubby hands, sweaty t-shirts, sore legs and shin bruises that make skateboarding so awesome. (I hope that came across well)

He thinks he's people! It looks like you focused about a foot too far and sharpened in PS witch boosted the contrast. It could probably use some work with the levels. A flash wouldv'e helped with the background being lighter than the subject but maybe wasn't feasible at shooting time. Nice one.
  1. What are you trying to build? (I think your question was worded strangely but I figured out the meaning after some thought). Neat idea here but try backing up a bit to lesson the effects of perspective (uh... what's the technical term?). You could use a view camera with tilt to fix this or try photoshop (skew transform I think). The basic idea is to straighten out (make more parallel) the vertical lines. Gl.

Actually I think the selective desaturation works well here since the theme is St. Valentine's Day. It's also nice to see a typical glamour setup used with a male model. I get frustrated seeing mediocre glamour photos get high ratings here just because there is a nude/seminude woman as the subject. Let's see this how this one does...

And btw, is this image any more original because the subject is a man? I would have to say... yes, but not dramatically so.

  2. I'm going to give this a bad review. Most of the action is obscured by the fence. You should have moved in front of the bridge for a better angle.

Part of my dislike for this photo is not entirely your fault, it's the skater's. With skateboarding photography you really want the photo to look like he is going to land the trick, not just jump and kick your board out of the way. Sometimes a skater can easily land a trick but will "bail" in the middle of it because of balance or just confidence issues. This looks like one of those instances. It is then the photographer's job to either shoot enough photos to get one that looks like a winner or have a good enough eye to not take the bad ones. Anyhow, I have a supercritical eye for skate photos because I grew up skateboarding and learned the art of photography by shooting my friends while skating.

On the good side it is well exposed, focused and has frozen the action well enough. Still, good technical specifics don't always make for a good photo. Keep looking for oportunites to photograph skaters and don't be afraid to ask them to retry something if you think it makes a good photo.

  3. Very nice work. I would like to see what the original image looked like, probably very dull in comparison. On first glance I thought that the sky was over done (too cluttered) but the darkness of the trees on the horizon provides a nice center to pull the whole image together. I like that there are enough patterns to allow the eyes to "play" in the picture. The sky reminds me of a certain flavour of ice cream, something with bands of chocolate and caramel. Once again, very nice work.

Really, what an awefull title. Did you tell him you were going to name it this before you shot it? I doubt it, since he has a smile on his face. Other than that, not a bad photo overall. It is certainly interesting to see how people age.
  4. this wouldv'e been more effective (increased the sense of isolation/alienation of the environment) if the people in the background were not present. keep shooting at this location and try a wider lens if you have it.

i actually used three flashes for this. one ttl flash in my left hand, a second main light on 8ft stand at about 2 o'clock, and the background "kicker-light" in the frame. i set up to light the rail with the 8 ft and use my ttl as fill/trigger. when ramsee (the skater) switched to the ledge i just used my ttl flash as main. you can see how the rail was lit in my skateboarding folder.
