1. oh yes!

    I have a GANDOLFI 8x10. bought it in about 1990 for 4000$........
wouldnt change it for anything.
it is the most beautiful camera I've ever seen in real life..
including Deardorfs...

  2. well - I use SE1 (The Kentmere product) all the time.
I have virtually no problems now - but take in count that I have been doing this for more than a decade..
the idea of pre wetting the paper is good - make it humid - not wet! then the emulsion covers the surface easyer.
Start with quick strokes, so you cover the paper with the emulsion.
then add some more emulsion with very gentle strokes - horizontally - then vertically, and finally - when you start noticing a stroke-trace behind the brush strokes - diagonal ones.
the latter has to be done SO very light.
IF you se bubbles, and there are bound to be many after the first action, theese are quite easy to remove with the second, gentler brush strokes.
You can also put the tip of the brush in hot water (only a small amount of water is needed) and with this "melt" the bubbles away.
i fyou use paper, I recommend you use a soft brush. the foam thing is not good in my opinion, as it actually makes even more bubbles... (and it is more expensive, as emulsion go up in it and stiffens - wasted.)
finally: if you don't have it; go buy the book "silver Gelatine" which is a "bible" regarding liquid emulsions!
you can get it at
www.silverprint.co.uk
look under "books" and there it is. VERY good book!
have fun
