1.
I have thought of Big Bend many times, however, it's close to the Mexican Border and I am sure I will be harassed by the Border Patrol (I am not white).

I went camping in the organ pipe National monument and it was really bad. Everytime I would set up my tripod, the BP agents would show up ask for identification. They would make me stand in front of them (with my hands out of my pockets, inspite of the cold) and ask me what I am doing etc. By next morning I was harassed out of the park. I am very wary of getting a repeat of that. I do not want to be shot for indulging in photography!

  2.
Hey guys,

I was planning to go camping in a National park or any other scenic area where I can do landscape photography.

Does anyone know of national parks (outside of FL) where camping can be reasonably pleasant at this time of the year (not colder than freezing)? I want to spend the entire week in the area.

Thanks.

  3.
Hey guys, Are there any great locations for sunrise/sunset pictures in the DC area? Nature landscape shot suggestions are welcome, but I was mostly hoping for architectural shots of the monuments at sunrise/sunset. Also, I was hoping for locations where I can actually see the sun come up/go down right at the horizon (I like to include the sun in my shots).

I was hoping to include the fall colors with the monuments, so any nice locations to catch the colors in DC?

Thanks.

  4.
Hey guys, I am trying to buy a reasonably priced lens for my canon 60d. Both the tamron and canon are roughly the same price. Earlier reviews I read indicated that I should buy the Tamron as it's cheaper than the Canon. Now given that they are very close in price, which lens is better in terms of image quality and usability? What do the gurus suggest? Thanks.

Both have IS and both are the same focal length range.

  5.
Hey guys,

This is a follow up of http://www.photo.net/travel-photography-forum/00ZL8r.

It has so happened that I might need to spend a week around the Syracuse area around Christmas time. Given that I have two weeks of vacation around that time, I was wondering if the veterans knew of any winter landscaping trip I could do for two weeks, centered around the Syracuse area. I don't necessarily need to camp. I was wondering if I could get any landscapes similar to the ones Marc Adamus does :). Basically mountains, streams, snow, and sunrise/sunset.

Any idea? Sorry for the repeat question, but really have no time to research. Thanks!

  6.
Hey guys, I have an old Samsung Syncmaster 997 DF monitor I still use that I bought way back in 2004. I will be getting a new PC (Dell XPS 8300) and I figured I should upgrade my monitor.

What do the gurus suggest? I will mostly be using it for my photo needs (photo editing using cs2), maybe a few games and then maybe movies (very rare). What monitor would best suit my needs? My budget is around $300-$400.

Thanks.

  7.
Hey guys, I am in the DC area. I want to start taking pictures of winter landscapes with the snow etc. Which areas would you recommend within a 1200 mile radius of DC for the same? I also want to start doing some winter camping. So I should be able to access the areas by car.

Thanks.

  8.
Hey guys, I am in the DC area.
I have a two week long vacation coming up in July. It's been a while since I took a camping photo trip and I am excited. I would love to go anywhere within a 1200-1500 mile radius of the DC area. Since I will be camping, it might make more sense to head north (say MI, WI etc. ) than the south.
I do nature photography and would just love to get some ideas on the possible places I can see.
Thanks.

  9.
hey guys,

I have a cokin P system that I use and I have hitech grad ND filters that I use. I notice that my filters keep getting scratched and since I shoot at narrow apertures, all the scratches show up. How do I keep my filters from getting scratched? I currently use a CD disk holder for my filters.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

  10.
Hey guys,

I am planning to go to FL during the entire thanksgiving week in November and then again during the entire christmas/new year week. I am thinking of hitting a few of the national forests, wildlife refuges and state parks. I will be camping the entire time.

So can the members recommend the places I can visit (with the break up for Nov/Dec if possible)? I do mostly landscape photography.

Thanks.

  11.
Ugh. I was a bit concerned about being so close to the border. Now I guess I will avoid the organ pipe then. I did call up the park and asked them about potential concerns and they said it's really safe! I wonder if I should call again and get a second opinion.
Let me keep doing my research and finally decide on where to go.

  12.
Hey guys,

I am flying into Tucson on 20th Dec and will be returning on 1st Jan. I am trying to camp as much as possible.

Here are the possible places I have shortlisted

a) Organ Pipe cactus natl. monument - AZ
b) Guadalupe mountains natl. park - TX
c) White sands - NM
d) Mojave desert - CA
e) Anza Borrego desert SP - CA
f) Joshua Tree Natl. park - CA

I know that I do not have time to see all of them. So will pick and choose depending on the weather.

How do you guys rate these places? Any other place in southern CA,NM, AZ that I shouldn't miss?

Thanks.

  13.
Hmm good question. There are to main problems with the front element rotating while focussing.
a) The focal length changes slightly
b) The orientation of the filters change.

I want to avoid these two plus have the distance scale.

  14.
Hello all,
This is with respect to my other post http://www.photo.net/canon-eos-digital-camera-forum/00Uw0y
Now, I like the kit lens and am happy with the results. My two main problems with that lens are:
a) front focussing element
b) Lack of the distance scale for focussing
I know there are bunch of lenses that have these two options. My question is: which is the cheapest lens with these two options that has a sharpness and image quality similar to the kit lens?
Thanks.

  15.
I currently have a rebel XSi. It's a neat little camera and I like it. I like the kit lens it comes with, but it's getting on my nerves with the front focussing element. I am thinking of buying the canon 17-85 mm lens for these kind of sensors. However, I want to be as cheap as possible. So my concern is how long will these sized sensors last? I hope at least for the next few years so I can get back what I paid for the lens ..

  16. Hey Tom,

Thanks for the idea. I am thinking of going to Blackwater falls state park this weekend. It is supposed to snow, and the colors are just past peak. Do you think it's worth it, going over? I will be camping too!

  17.
Hehe. Thanks guys. Maybe I should have mentioned that I go to Shenandoah all the time and was hoping for a different area :).
Maybe I can still go and check out the park. It's nice and rainy and I might get some good shots.....

  18.
Hey guys,

I have a bunch of images that I want to print from Adorama Pix (reasonable prices).

What are the things that I need to do before uploading? How much do I need to sharpen my images? What is the best paper for nature/outdoorsy shots? Here is a link to one of the pics I will be printing: http://www.photo.net/photo/8123414&size=lg

Anything I should keep in mind?

Thanks.
