Excellent. Thank you both very much for the replies. I'm not too sure how it works. but now that I have a name I can do more research.. doesn't appear to be worth too much, but thats ok. it's still an interesting piece of photographic equipment. The one I have is different than the ones they showed in the photos on google.. mine is older im sure, Judging by the Leitz logo, and knowing how that has changed..
thanx again for the info. if anyone else has more, please feel free to post it...

Can someone help me with this. I got it at a garage sale. I have no
idea.. the only markings are E. Leitz Wetzlar. it has two spools for
35mm film i am assuming. but no lens or shutter or anything. no
trigger button. one side flips open, and there is only a piece of
glass on either side of the thing. one is red. the other clear.
I put photos of all sides of this thing, and apart as well... I would
greatly appreciate any info someone may have as there isn't enough
markings to really even do a search on this... Is it a camera..
sorta.. is it a neg viewer... sorta.. is it a microscope thingy..
sorta... I dunno!!! Please help :)

Well I hope someone here knows, because I use Photoshop 7 and it isnt for me so far... I wish it would..

Tiffen does make a filter called something like a mirror filter.. a hot mirror.. something like that.. I cant remember.. its designed to cut out all infrared light that could be picked up by digital sensors... I've taken about 5 shots with one.. I didnt notice anything.. Ive never noticed a problem with any of my shots on digital and I've shot thousands.... so... is there a filter for digital yes.. do you need it? not in my opinion.
-
btw.. the rotation that takes place in the camera doesnt seem to hold when you put it in the comp.. mine always end up being horizontal again, no matter what...
-
It's about the same.. You get used to it after a while.. yes.. because its a smaller sensor, the viewfinder is perportional to that...
-
uh.. thats sorta like comparing a chevy to a ford if you are in the US.. but anyways.. if you have one system or the other, it might be wise to stick with it, just from the cost consideration of replacing so much gear.... if you don't, my personal preference is canon.. I have used both brands for film cameras, and prefer canon's lenses over nikons. They seem to always be one step ahead of nikon on that one... as for the bodies.. I have heard rumors of the nikon DSLR's having sharpness problems. something about the light not going perfecty through, where as, canon, with their larger diameter lens mount doesnt seem to have the problem.. this is of course only a rumor, I have not used a Nikon DSLR, and really, working in a camera shop that sees a lot of them, I personaly haven't found anyone to say yes its true... just a rumor! ;)..
its up to you really.. I would say use both at a store and see which you like better... my vote though, is for canon...

anders makes a good point... keep a look out for good deals on the cards, you often see them drop for a week or two.... if you time it right, you can get pretty good savings... and I always like to have a back up. I plan on getting a 1 gig microdrive soon, and will keep my 256 as a back up, incase I get into a situation where I need more, then I know I always have an emergency card good for about a hundred shots or so depending on the ISO...

Thanx for the info Beau. I guess I should run some more tests and just see if its some fluke thing. It certainly sounds like it should show them.. and it didn't make any sense that i couldnt transfer them.. a jpg is a jpg.. doesnt matter what the color space is, it should still transfer....

Good link Vsevolod Krishchenko. :)

umm.. I dunno.. It's a personal preference.. I would say at least a 512, though personaly, I plan on getting a 1 gig.. as for microdrive vs. a normal Compact Flash.. the Microdrives are cheaper. I havent heard of them being any more problimatic. the only negative I have heard is that some claim if you shoot a lot of images in a small amount of time, the card will actually heat up to the point that you can feel it in the grip.. though, of all the people I know that use them, only one has ever had that problem, the others all loved them...
At the camera shop I work at, we rent a D60 with a 1gig Lexar CF card.. our first one had some sort of problem, and actually got corrupted 3 or 4 different times, finaly to the point that their software would no longer repair the card.. Lexar said it was defective and sent us a replacement for free.. but, I dont know anyone else that has one of these, so i dont know if its a known problem, of if we were an exception or what....
its up to you man.. and of course, you could also go with getting some sort of digital wallet to hold the images as well.. they make them in the range of 5-40gigs, and probably higher....

I must be a newbie because I have no idea what a gistogram is.. now if you mean histogram, you are quite right... But I was just refering to trying to look simply at the image and decide if the exposure is right or not, as not only can you change the brightness of it, but it will also look different depending on the angle you view it...
I was trying to be helpful, but nevermind, you obviously know WAY more than I do about it...
-
Well, I have both, and that is my standard, go everywhere with me, set up. I would love it if they made a say... 20-85, but thats just wishful thinking and im not even sure it would be technicaly possible.. but anyways.. Yea, the 24-84 is a very sharp lens, quick at AF, and reasonably fast at f3.5-4.5
The 27-70 f2.8L would be a great lens, but two drawbacks... price obviously.. and its heavy.. the 10D is already a bit of a weight increase from my old D30... so I don't know that I would even want to deal with the extra weight of this lens... lightness has a lot going for it!

FJ Sarmiento... to answer you question since i didnt see a responce.. yes, the 1Ds does have a full 35mm size chip, so your 24mm lens for example, is still a 24mm lens...
as for the 10D I just got mine yesterday.. I bought a D30 in may or so of last year and loved it. It basicly did everything I wanted.. though some things, not that well.. I wanted more mp, larger than 3, and I hate the AF system in the D30.. its no secret that it didnt work all that well.. and that the D60 wasn't much of an improvement in that respect... Working at a camera shop, I knew the rumors the same as everyone else, and tried to decide if i might want what ever was the next one. I knew PMA would answer my question.. so... after checking canons site every day for a couple weeks, the 10D finaly showed up.. the specs looked good.. still 6mp, as the D60, but a welcomed increase from my D30... BUT... how does the AF work.... It said that it was based off of the Elan 7.. haveing sold this camera quite a few times, i had had the benefit of using it and knew it worked very well.. so, I took the plunge.. besides.. I decided if it was $2000 I would go for it... I called Adorama, asked when they were taking orders, they said I could be 50th on the list if i wanted.. I said how much, they said $1,500, I said sold.... I asked when they thought they might get them.. they laughed at me.. I said I just hope its quicker than the D60 took and they agreed...
well, low and behold, 17 days later, I come home from lunch, and there's a nifty adorama box on my doorstep!
now for the test.. just how well does it auto focus? Well, I haven't made it fail yet... It seems to respond as well as the Elan 7, and also, it seems to match my EOS 1n film body as well..
Yes.. I'm happy!
Now what am I doing at this computer when I could be out using the thing!!!!
-
Ok.. a bit of back ground... I have windows xp, photoshop 7.0 using
adobe 1998 for the color space, and have a custom monitor profile
created with a Spyder. Oh.. and a card reader as opposed to hooking
the camera up to the comp for transfer...
That said.. why is it that when I shoot my 10D in standard mode, the
thumbnails and so forth all pop up, but if i swich it over to adobe,
they wont.... on the computer that is.. now I can understand that
since the comp isnt opperating in the same color space it might not
be able to convert.. but the computer wont even let me copy the
images off of my card reader and onto the hard drive.. The only way I
can transfer is to shoot the images in standard.. or use the camera
to convert them.. either way it defeats the purpose of it...
Is the Adobe RGB function on the camera only to be used with a Mac
platform? I believe the 1Ds has the same sort of color space
choices.. Has anyone noticed this problem with theirs?
It's going to get really tiresome if I have to convert every image I
ever shoot with this camera when I open it in photoshop.

Sorry, but I'm going with David on this one.. I have a 10D my self and have seen no problems with it. I also see no problems with the photos you have shown.. don't forget that not only does it come down to personal preference, but also monitor calibration. Do not rely on the screen in the back of the camera. They are far too small to get a good representation.
-
Yea.. what the heck.. who cares.. just process the damn thing.. its all of $10 or something! But dont drop the roll.. if you do that they will be out of focus and need to be put into a bath of focusall....
:P
-
update... I just did it on mine, and all it says is busy... so I guess its not a buffer issue..
Nevermind :P
-
I may be wrong, but I was under the impression that type I, II had to do with how large the card was, both in memory, and in physical size... the type II cards are thicker than type I's.... and are the larger file size cards... 512 and larger are type II cards because they are thicker...
I think!
-
you said a quick series of photos.... if you fill the buffer the d30 and 60 would flash errors of some sort to make you wait till it had finished saving... I just got my 10D about 15 minutes ago, so I havent seen this one...
-
I've had a bucket of water on my 1n, snow, and rain. never had a problem... as for the lens.. I dont have that one. but using my 24-85 lens, which is certainly not sealed, no problems either.. use common sence. if water gets on it, dont zoom and suck it into the lens, dont spin the focus ring while its all wet, dont remove teh lens, etc.. just dry it off and keep shooting..
-
it might all be legit.. of course.. if you want a charger thats $1000.. oh.. warranty.. another grand.. how bout some driver software.. thats $500... oh what.. you wanted the cable to plug the charger in.. ok... $250... um... am i forgetting anything?
what? you want it before next year... well, thats a $2000 rush shipping fee

I've seen a 1.4 fall off a bed all by itself and result in a $150 repair so i agree ;)
Well it says E.Leitz Wetzlar... but what is it???
in Leica and Rangefinders
