Actually Peter, I think the point is whether or not you need f2.8. If you do then you buy the
17-55mm else you spend less, carry less plus you get VR and get a bit more width with the
16mm.
-
It's certainly nice to think that extra small amount of resolution or corner sharpness will
suddenly transform your mediocre photos into good photography...
-
If you have the 18-200mm already then the 12-24mm make more sense. The 24-70 and 17-55mm would be redundant.
-
Your pano shots are better. 60 and 67 are good but the other framing is too loose. Get
closer or switch to a 35 or 28mm.
-
Of course if you just **WANT** a D3 then just get one. No need to justify it really...
-
IS/VR work wonders for static subjects. Wide angles at 1/8 sec and ISO 800 is sufficient for
most photo ops unless you are doing time exposures.

What exactly is the difference between a graduation portfolio and a portfolio? Can you just
graduate with what's already done and work on another Social/Doc/PJ for potential agency/
employer after? Having said that, perhaps you can combine them to show your versatility as
both a portrait and doc photographer.

Anyone have experience using live view mode as their default mode on the d300? I have heard that the
battery life of the d300 is incredible compared to the d200 but how about in LV mode. How long can a
full charge last when using LV mode (the one with LCD on all the time) ? Is there any tech data on that?
comments? Thanks!
BTW why is the battery life better on the d300? Isn't the D300 LCD ultra high end? And isn't the D300
faster in every way?

I'll go out on my own here. While some of his shots are great, I find the same-o-repeato
subject to background juxtapose rather lame after the initial few gotchas. Same same and
boring as some of the In-Public folks.
-
That cost you $13 for 3 swabs...about as much as a roll of film and basic processing. How
often do you clean the sensor? You do know that most countries pay more than 3.40 dollar
per gallon for petro right?
-
Yeah use a 20mm or at least a 24mm on a DX camera...a fast zoom would be quite handy.
-
By the same token, 2 x 4 gig is better than one 8 gig card...never know it will crap out on
you.
-
I would pick up a backup say a d70 for $400 or so especially if you are going the 2 or 3
lenses route.
-
The problem with nikon is they have no fast prime in the wide range so there really isn't any advantage (none faster than 2.8) to go prime except for less weight/bulk. The 35mm and 50mm combo are not good efov due to the crop factor.
I would get the 17-55mm but if you like primes then maybe a 20mm / 50mm is worthwhile combo. You can add the 18-70mm for another $200 also. They will end up costing much less than a mint 17-55mm.

Sure having a discreet camera is helpful but your demeanor and personality play a bigger role. The shooters on the doc/street forum use everything from Mamiya RB to Ricoh GRD to Canon 1d Mark3 to
olympus epic...so it's really not about the camera.
-
Nice setup but the 65mm EFOV isn't really useful for general photography. As for compact dslrs...I don't understand the obssession with small sizes. If it is too big for a pocket then you gonna have to bring a bag or hang it anyway. Even the new Oly is too big for a pocket imo...

You win Bob! I would rather talk to my door...

>>>The reality is that many people can afford an M8- I certainly can-- but don't want it,
great lenses and all.<<<
Exactly! Even if the lenses are slightly sharper wide open etc...it doesn't matter much if you
can't get the shot because you are limited by 2fps, no zooming, no AF, no long lenses, no
sub f2.8 wide lenses etc...and the 5k price certainly doesn't help!
-
>>>I've said nothing about what PJs use. I wrote only about your (false) claims that there are
much better cameras for much less and that the Leica lenses are not an advantage over DSLR
lenses.<<<
Again, you are just reading what you want to read and not what I wrote. I said nothing of FF
nor leica lenses as no good. I even said I like M lenses. What I did say was that there are
better tool for *PJ* than the M8. BUT the point is you are too blind and deaf to see or hear
that. Where is the 24mm F1.4? 16-35mm f2.8? or 24-70mm? for the M?
-
You just want to see what you see Bob. The fact is the M8 isn't the tool of choice for working
PJ. It's a fact...I didn't make it up. Whether you can use the M8 to take portrait is another
thing altogether Bob. BTW I can shoot great portrait with a $400 digicam. Again, that is not
in question here.
-
Seriously now Bob, I like leica lenses just like any others here but it is not a good tool set for
photojournalism today no matter how you slice the pie.
-
The "truth" is you are blind, deaf and duped by the the leica myth Mr. Blakeley...how sad
indeed! I do feel sorry for guys like you.

My vote <a href="http://www.bungeetrampoline.com/

There isn't any, that was my point. Photography is art and not a science...
