  1. Does anyone know is there a simple formula, or some chart that will let me know what

speed i should be using for taking photos from passanger site. How to adjust it to the car

speed? We are talking about small curvy european roads. I would quess ISO at 400. F4,

now one parametar missing. in k/h or

    m/h whatever you can find.

And one more question, am i right assuming IS should be off if i choose another lens?

  2. i would suggest backup cards, half the size or the one you use normally is ok. Remember

failure will happen and when they do, well as backup you will need to shut JPG instead of

raw for a day or two no big problem. And take laptop, as you remove the card upload the

images, so you have the copy. If card just dies dont hope it will get better, stop using it.

As far as laptop i have 12inch powerbook, and i dont know if you favour Apple, but it is

perfect for this work, even for me, amateur photographer, since it is not its primary

    purpose.

  3. true, not many need 300mm side, especially not on digital (480mm) and especially not on

2x extender making it 960mm. Of course it would be a bit "crappy" image at that lenght. It

is not something you use often, more as technical cappacity that might here and there

produce interesting image. Ken, the only time i have used this combination was to see will

full moon take whole of just a part of the image of 6.2Mpix. Quallity, hmm, could be much

    better.

Geoff, i was also a bit afraid of off-white L-lens. when trying to find something so small so

far away without IS, last think i need is someone to keep asking me some thenical details

that i dont know off. 17-40L with hood looks scarry enough if i need to scare someone.

  4. 1. favourite lens my old 50mm 1.8 II, i still need to abuse new ones to put them in the list.

    2. Other camera? well one of the favourite is my Sony Ericsson p910 phone camera.

horrible quality (makes webcam look like "L" class lens), but it is always in my pocket, but

then many will not concider this a camera.

  5. bad picture taken with digicam, so do you have any picture that shows "your tax money at

work" as we would say here in US. If you do please feel free to post amendment without

much needed agreeing to amendment or something like that.<div>00D0tv-24866884.jpg.6d015f70f7bf400a3e4e69fdd270b242.jpg</div>

  6. i had the same issue when i was buying new lens for my Digital Rebel, or D300. I switched

from standard 28-80 no USM to 17-40 L, and trust me, especially with digital EOS bodies,

you will change them, but i hope lens will stay with me for a long time. Capturing images

is more about optics then mechanics of the little box that holds your film, or memory

card. Just think of the path of light. In digital EOS forum many use just that combination L-

lens with Drebel or D10, D20, etc. It is much healthier combination then high end D1s

mark II and 28-90 cheapest lens.

L-lens will fit any EOS body, now what do you really need in camera it is your choice. Some

prefer 1v becouse of speed, shutter speed, maybe size, maybe material. I would say do

your research and find what L lenses do you need. Have fun with them and when that

combination reach its capacity then think about new camera.

  7. Ok i have some really silly question about finally ordering this lens. I hope more

experienced shutterbugs on this forum will not mind.

    1. Is it slow at f/4? In the group (mm and price-wise) only one IS lens exist EFS 17-85 that

    is f/4.5-6 but with IS

    2. it is great for having it around all the time, but when carried around on DRebel will it be

heavy and flip the rebel. i hope you understand what i asked, if not please take a long

zoom lens and place it on your camera, then put it around your neck, and walk around

with lens hitting your belly constantly.

    3. Is lens hood really necessary to have on? (i will be traveling europe with two infants so i

need to think - less it good

    4. Where do you store yours, it is fairly pricy lens, so how do i keep care of it, obviously

my EF 28-80 II (no USM) was not treated well at all.

  8. I am going to europe for fun in month. Well i will take a lot of my photo stuff with me, but

concidering two infants that i have my bag will have to be lighter then yours. With all the

items you mention i would take a film camera. With a lot of B/W rolls of film, you will see

once you get there. I have been to many of the places you are going to visit, and even

more that you will unfortunately have to skip this time.

My best suggestion would be 1 D-EOS camera, and maybe 2 lenses at the time. Have your

16-35L attached (what no 17-40L?), keep your 70-200L in the backpack. And remember,

lot of walking, no a/c, actually when you get back to Miami you will find climate to be, well

    comfortable lol.

  9. you are walking down the street with your trusty camera... and then you notice something

is wrong there. so please post such images here.

  10. i dont think converters will work with EFS, but other issue here is that EFS 17-85 is f4-5.6

lens so 2X teleconverter will reduce max apperture for 2 more steps (did i get this

correctly?) making it something like EF 34-170 f8-11 IS.

hmmm, EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is around $400, Canon 2x II Extender EF $280. Well

add that $120 and you will have great lens. It just make no sense to use teleconverter on

    any good wide zoom.

  11. almost year ago i switched from my Rebel 2000 to Digital Rebel or 300D. It made my life

easier. I got pictures right away. Just imagine next time in italy, no more "i wish i used

wider aperture" type of regrets. So my life is now digital, no more focusing to take

picture, focusing to print them, focusing to scan them. Such 3 step process have to be

mistake magnet. and you can keep your 14-85, at least before you buy 17-40L, everyone

have one, it is like a memory card, you must have it, or camera is worthless.

now i still carry my Canon Rebel around, for black and white images. Yes i can simply take

picture with digital and with one click change it to the black and white, but i am grain

freak. I just love the look of high ISO black and white film, and digital will not replace it.

So that is my backpack, hmm concidering wife just got that new 10 oz, (300mg) sony

video camera, i have space for a lens or two....

  12. family pictures? blurred background? with 17-40L. have i missunderstod the basics of

photography? 1. blurred backround =small aperture. f/4 small enough. 2. portrait picture

= do not take from such distance, use 100mm at least, or all your family members will be

a bit rounded. so will someone now explain to me please where did i get it wrong.

  13. i have a bit strange issue. I own lovely 75-300 IS, that opened my eyes to the new

dimension of quality. Well i guess it would be time to upgrade the wider side of my lenses.

    So i want to by EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS , or EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS, or maybe L

    lens.

my question is do you guys feel strange slapping $1500 L-lens in front of entry level

digital rebel, or is it just my crazy idea?
