Were you using the ID-11 stock or at a 1:1 dilution? The 1:1 time for HP-5 at 400 is 13 minutes. For a stock solution, it's 7 1/2 minutes. If you developed it 13 minutes in stock ID-11, you really overdevoloped.

For the past two years, I've been using emptied 5L wine boxes with the collapsible bladder and spout for my ID-11 and LPD stock solutions. The rectangular box takes much less shelf space than two 2.5 L bottles and shelf life seems no problem. It's also fun buliding your supply of storage containers, hic!.

I want to shoot my first roll of Kodak HIE this weekend. I have a Quantaray R2 red filter. Is this dark enough for good IR effects or should I get a Tiffen 25?

I too have experienced this Xtol clumping problem and my results at

1:1 with Delta 400 have been fair at best. Even with "unclumped

developer" I'm getting sprocket streaks and unacceptable grain.

Happened with FX 39 on my 1st try also. Any clues as to what I'm

doing wrong?
