JJ, the wonderful thing about digital cameras is you can experiment, get immediate feedback, delete what doesn't work and try again. Give it a try.

Raymond, us Jersey boyz think alike. I signed up for ICP's Intensive Photoshop I course in January. I've taken three bw darkroom courses from them previously. Good school. I'll probably want to buy a Mac after using their equipment!
Take care, Doug

I am printing color. I have not profiled/calibrated my system, yet. Although, what I see on the screen is pretty close to what the 1280 outputs. I have color management on the 1280 turned off. I downloaded P.I.M II sw from Epson which gave me some generic profiles for certain papers and the 1280.
The colors are not flat. It is more the image itself. Not as much depth as the ones from my lab.
Well, I am not going to obsess (sp?) over this for now. I am scheduled for an intensive 4-day Photoshop class in NYC next month afterwhich I hope to have a better understanding of the digtal workflow, advantages and limitations.
Thanks for the replies.

I am just beginning to get serious about digital
photography/printing and need some guidance.
I am printing from photoshop cs to an Epson 1280 using Epson
colorlife paper (Image source Canon 10D). When comparing a print
from my printer to one from my lab (MF 120 film source) the inkjet
print looks flat. Is this typical?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Linda, the 50mm f/1.8 should be fine.
Re the 10D. Buy one if you can afford it. I own one and like it. The wedding studio I shoot for uses both the 10d and the 1D for wedding work. As others have pointed out, the 10D gives you a digital negative which you must then take into your digital darkroom and work with. I am struggling to learn Photoshop as I write this.
Good luck and have fun!

I used to own and use a Nikon F5 and Sb-28. I now own and use a Canon EOS-1V 550EX. I give the edge to Nikon. I shot a wedding with a Nikon D100 and SB-80 and that seemd to do a very good job.

Your flash should work fine in auto mode witht he 10D. I use a Metz in auto mode with a 1D. I own a 10D, but use the Canon flash (550). Take the flash with you when you go to you rcamera store and see if they will let you try it out first.
Good luck.

First suggestion is to read the manual. Check out C.Fn. - #5.
And no, the external flash does not have to be in manual mode, nor does the camera. (Where do people get this mis-information from?) External flash works in all modes. (Well, P,M,Av, and Tv. I don't mess with other modes.)
I think the custom function you want is 2. However, my 10D is set to the default of 0 and my external 550 flash works just fine. On camera or with the off-camera cord.

If you want to go digital, buy a 10D and use your existing Canon lenses. Actually for the price of a 1D you could get a new 10D and a used 501CM kit. BTW, the 1D is being discountinued, or so I have heard. My dealer can no longer get them, but Canon have not made an official announcement.
Good luck.

Just to jump on the bandwagon... The 550 works perfectly with the 10D. So, you either have an incorrect setting or a malfuntion.
BTW, when you say the image is dark do you mean the lcd image? What does the histogram show?

I have used (owned) both. The EOS-1V is faster in my opinion. Also, the canon "hunts" much less than the Nikon. I currenly own the EOS-1VHS and a 10D. Use both for weddings.

Canon 16-35mm f2.8 L or the 17-35mm f2.8 L. You should be able to find the 17-35 used for under $1k.

Another vote for CF cards. I use 512mb 16x cards. 16x is more than adequate. I wouldn't spend a premium for faster cards.
Regardless of what you decide, I'd have more than one card.

Stroboframe Press-T. Use it for weddings all the time.

Update...
Re-installing Windows XP Pro resolved the issue.

A question for you experienced Mamiya 6 users... Does the viewfinder
correct for parallax?
I shoot weddings for a local studio and the first weddings I did
with the M6 I was getting the subjects heads too close to the edge
of the frame and some shots weren't centered (subjects too far to
the right.)
The last two weddings I did I used my Hassy 501 for more of the
formal shots and the photos looked better as regards the above. So,
I thought this might be a parallax issue.

Talked to Canon support. Problem is with my PC. It does not know what it has attached to it. The GL2 shows up in device manager as Other Device. I need to contact my hardware vendor on Monday.
-
Adrian,
Thanks for the info. I'll give that a try. The firewire connection appears to be fine. It shows up in device manager as working properly and XP is able to determine what camera is attached to the PC via the firewire connection.
I'll check the settings in Adobe and let you know.

Doug

Has anyone succesfully gotten Windows XP to recognize the Canon GL2?
The camera did not come with drivers, except for seting up
photostitch and zoombrowser or browserEX (don't recall exact name.)
Canon site is no help. Driver downloaded does not include any driver
files that I can see and XP hardware setup can't see any either.
Perhaps I just don't understand. I am very new to video editing and
just want to get XP to recognize the camera so I can capture video
from its tape to Adobe Premier.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Doug

Here is the number for Allen's 215-547-2841 .

My dealer had several on his shelf when I was up there Tuesday. His price is $1,399 the last I knew. So, Amazon probably can't them because they are not a dealer (just a guess.)
-
Prices vary. My local dealer sells the 1Ds for $7,000, I believe. When the 10D came out he was taking orders at $1,399 when everyone else was selling for $1,499. He likes to move product.
Also, all his products, Canon or otherwise, are US products. No gray market. So, price can vary.

Interesting thread. When I point my 10D at a grey card and take a picture the histogram shows underexposure. When I shoot weddings for the studio, we set the 10D to overexpose by +2/3, when indoors using flash we set the flash for +2/3 exposure compsenation. A similar thread on another board had results similar to mine.
Guess that is why photography is an art and not a science! (-:

Buy a card reader and use the Caon software to transer your files. I use the Zomm Browser software that came with the 10D. I burn DVDs as backups to my hardrive.
Have fun and enjoy!
