Paul I was about to respond to your post but its not even worth it,
because it does not make any sense. but I will say this just as Bach
and Beethoven are both classical composer and can be compared in that
they both are in the same genre of music. I would consider Misrach
and Fatali to be in the same genre that was the basis of my
comparsion. Also I think we can have a discussion without calling
someones opinions "childish" or insulting their views. I disagree
with you but I dont need to insult you to show that.-J

Hi david at this website (http://www.jackspcs.com/pmk.htm) they say
11 min @ 70 degrees for N. I think those times are straight from
Hutchings himself. I remeber reading an article by Hutchings about
bergger and I think he said to rate it at 100. I have never tried
this film before so I dont know first hand.-J

"Michael runs a bussiness. Plain and simple."
could not have said it better myself.
<p>
as for the comparison to Misrach they are similar they both shoot
color landscapes of the west.the differnce is Misrach is good and
does not need the gimmicky hyper saturation that is inherent to
Fatalis work.-J

I have been using pmk for almost a year and love it. the problem i
have with Dixactol is the formula is not published and there is not
whole lot of info available on it. G hutchings gives you the formula
for pmk if you buy the book or you can get it over the web. and i
think Dixactol is more expensive.-J

I would try the arista 125 since its the same as fp4 and very cheap.
supposedly 5x7 will be available later this month. I shoot arista 400
in 4x5 and love it.-J

Fatali is a mediocre photog with incredibly bad taste.Richard Misrach
has shot the same type of subject matter and has a far more
interesting take on it. I think the real discussion should be which
is worse his prose or his titles?-J
-
I think chris is right Fatali`s writing is much worse than a few burn
marks on a stupid rock.not to mention the super saturation in his
photos, they actually hurt my eyes.-J

On a related note Im curious if anyone has ever tried tech pan in
Modified Windisch dev sold by the formulary. It states its similar to
the old windisch but modified by bill troop. they also recomend it
for tech pan.-J

If the fence has a hole in it the security guards asleep and i know
theres a good shot there im in. I spend as much time trying to
decipher the hidden meaning in no trespassing signs as i do under the
cloth figuring the composition. sometimes you just know that you get
away with shooting sometimes you know you cant. i get thrown off of
property every other shoot but people are generally nice about it.
you just have to use common sense and hope luck is on your side.
besides its adventurous (i know spelled that funny).at some you just
have to take a chance and shoot.-J

You should decide what is more important portability or movements. if
you need portability a monorail (like omega, calumet, cambo) may
present problems.if go for a graphic get a super speed its the only
one that can shoot vertical and it has front swing.as for monorails i
have cambo that i got for $250 its bulky but very flexible and easy
to use (just hard to carry).i shoot in the city so i drive alot walk
a little and the cambo works fine. if you hike or walk alot or take
public trans you should get something smaller (super speed).peace out-

My bad it should be 3/8ths not 1/8th. I dont even think there is a
1/8th. oops.-J

Stop bath can decrease the amount of stain you get with a staining
developer (pmk). It can cause pin holes and its just one more chemical
to mix and deal with.-J
-
I would try to get the thicker 1/8th in thick instead of the standard
1/4 in. Its always been my experience the 1/4 is not heavy to hold
the glass flush against the neg.-J

I use a gravity washer and it seems to work nicely but they are
expensive. It automatically drains the water every few minutes fun to
watch.-J

the best answer for you question is to get the film developing
cookbook it will tell you everything you ever wanted to know and alot
you did not -J

if you use wine bottle you can get these rubber corks and this pump
that will suck all the air out the bottle. great for developers.check
wine maker shops.-J

Hey Sean
Photo formulary sells it in 100mil bottles for $4.50. with a dilution
of 1:2000 it will probably last a lifetime.-J

I love the older Riteways (not to be confused with the new ones which
are expensive and i have heard nothing but bad things about).I get
them at camera shows for about 7 to 8 dollars apiece. the tape on the
bottom is much better than the new fidelities and the finger thats
holds the darkslide actually works.before you buy them just check
that the tape is not to worn and that the holder is pretty clean.
Before I use them I check them for leaks and i usually vaccum them
out and clean them with alcohol.-J

Should special care be taken when disposing of fixer? or can it just be dumped down the drain? I have heard it can corrode metal pipes. Any info is helpful.-J
-
i use wine bottles with rubber corks and a small pump to suck the air
out. check wine maker shops or cook wear shops. the pump is about 15
bucks the corks are 3 or 4 dollars a piece.-J

chris
if you wanted to be extremly anal you could time how long it takes to
pour out the chemistry and use that time as to when to start pouring
out the developer.will it effect the film? yes. how much? probably
not that much you would have to have a pretty critical eye to tell
the difference between 6 min and 6 min 30 sec. what i do is pre soak
the film for 2 min in water then process as usual i would start
pouring the dev out at 6 min knowing that it would take about 20 sec
to pour out. that is time enough to adjust for the fact that it took
the developer 20 sec to displace the water presoak in the emulsion.
a pre soak also prevents uneven developing.-J

Easy Killer.i think You read a little to much into Q`s statement.-J

Randy I have never used this tank but I have never heard a good thing
said about it.If you snoop around on this site you may find some
threads discussing the infamous yankee tank.If you have not used it
yet you may consider taking it back and exchanging it for something
else.-J

you might try drilling holes in pieces of board until you find the
right drill bit. then just drill a blank lens board. at least that is
what I would do. Just curious does the shutter have B & T ?-J

I would just like to say that kevin has a very elquent pen indeed!!
and I think he should be the spokes person for this site.He made such
a moving statement that i think we can all sympathize with. BRAVO!
BRAVO!-J
