First of all, it was an honor to see one of my shots come up when I
looked at the three photographs you used as your examples. Thank you.

As for my advice, just take that 70s rangefinder (whatever it may
be), load it with some Tri-X and go out and shoot.

For what it's worth, I try to meter off of something "general" in the
area I'm shooting and then preset the focus for a distance I'm
feeling comfortable with that day, and shoot. The hardest part for me
is not feeling "obtrusive." Somedays I feel invisible, other days I
feel like everyone within a hyndred yards is staring at me.

Good luck, enjoy, and post some results.

I concur with Michael. So much so that after buying, trying and
selling Leica lenses of different focal lengths and speeds, I have
settled on the 75 Lux and a just pre-ASPH 35 lux. I love this combo
so much that I just bought a used M6-TTL .85 to go with the 75. No
more switching lenses for me. In my book (or bag) this IS the combo
of choice. BTW, I had no trouble focusing/framing the 75 Lux with my
M6-TTL .72. I just want the ability to shoot an event without having
to switch lenses and possibley miss a moment.

I too tape over the logos on my M6. I'm not so much worried about
theft as I am by people saying "Oh, is that a Leica?" as I'm about to
take ther picture. But then again, I don't wear jackets that say
Tommy Hilfiger or hats that say Nike. I resent being expected to be a
walking billboard. Rant ended. Instead of black electrical tape buy a
set of 1 1/2" black vinyl numbers from Staples or Office Depot The
center of the "8" is perfect to cover the red dot and the "1" is
perfect for the logo.

I also have a Black Konica Hexar that I love. In silent mode it is
dead quite. Exposure if dead on, even in program mode, which is the
best program mode of any camera I've seen. It will bias itself to the
aperture that you want and shift only if that aperture will not give
a correct exposure. Its autofocus is fast and accurate. It will never
replace my M6, but I do find I grab the Hexar a lot more than I
thought I would when I bought it.

A piece of 1/2" dense foam cut to fit inside the rectangular lens
hood of a 35/2 (or 35/1.4). Wrap a small piece of gaffers tape (with
a small folded flap on one side) and you have the cheapest and best
lens hood cap a Leica lens has ever seen.

Well, I'd say you've just taken the "People Photography Forum" to a
whole new level. Multiple photographs (just wonderful, as usual) and
words. Now the pressure's on.

Consider an old collapsible 50/2. I picked one up a while ago and am
very happy with it. Mine dates back to 1954 and is in mint condition.
It's a bit heavier because it's chrome, but not that much. I have a
Leica UV filter and a lens hood from the new 50/2.8 on it and it is
exactly the same length as the pre-ASPH 35/2 with the rectangular
lens hood attached. It is really a great lens.
-
I'm about to buy a 50/1.4 and was wondering about people's opinions on the different versions. Any help would be appreciated.
-
Neat. I love the lights reflecting off of the pavement. I to would
like to have seen the man and the women directly in front of the two
headlights. A small point that takes nothing away from the photograph
as it is.
-
Terrific use of slower shutter speeds to capture the moment as it
really was. Nice job.

A Kaiser 40mm push-on lens cap works on a Leica E39 filter. B&H has
them for about $6 each. Buy more than one, as you will lose it sooner
or later.

I just picked up a MINT 50/2 collapsible lens last week for $350. The
lens was made in 1954 and looks like it just came of the dealer's
shelf. Sometimes older used equipment has features that are no longer
available new. My 35/2 preASPH lens is just one other example.

And besides, who knows where that 50/2 collapsible has been and seen.

That should be "always" not "allows".

Tony, you allows post the greatest shots. It's as though Dad is
totally glued to Dan's words and dan is speaking directly to your
Dad. Great composition, great tones... Just a terrific photograph.

I so much envy your's and Jeff's and Mike's (and other') work. You
all seem to have an "edge" that for one reason or another I can't
seem to get. Damn.
-
Yes John, I'm looking for a cap for the hood. I know that a 40mm push-
on cap fits perfectly on a E39 filter, but the 12549 and 12550 hood
has a raised "knurled" ring that makes it larger than the 40mm smooth
filter.

Thanks

Does anyone happen to know what size push-on lens cap will fit the M 50/2.8 lens hood (part #12549)?

Thanks in advance.
-
I just picked up a Summicron 50 collapsible (1954) that's in terrific shape. It came with both caps but no hood. I looked up the hood number that goes with the lens (12571/12585) but can't find one anywhere (ebay/B&H/etc). Any ideas where I may be able to pick one up or what other hood will fit this lens?

Just an aside. Why is it that we constantly hear about the need to use a hood on the Leica lenses (and other makes) to prevent flare, yet my wife uses her cheap point and shoot camera regularly without ever having flare problems?

Thanks in advance...

Does anyone know if the Kenko AF 2x telplus MC7 works with the Canon EF 85/1.8 lens? If so, does it have full autofocus and metering capabilities? If it matters, I would be using it with an EOS 3.

Thanks...

I'm so glad to here someone else rave about the Elmarit 135. While I
use my 35/2 and 50/2 much more than the 135/2, for the situations
when I need the 135 it is tops.

You should give Delta 3200 a try. I find it to be much better than
the Kodak 3200. Tighter grain, better shadows and highlights. It is
really great if you shot at 1600 and develop for 3200. I sometimes
load my M6 with the 3200 rated at 1600 and carry a 1 stop and 2 stop
ND filter with me to slap on the lens if I'm shootong in bright
light. Works great.

May I suggest an older 135/2.8 Elmarit (with goggles). I picked one
up used for just over $400. I love it. While it is certainly not used
nearly as much as my 35/2 and my 50/2, for the right job it is
wonderful. The goggles magnify the viewfinder image so that it uses
the 90mm framlines instead of the normal 135mm framelines. I use it
mostly to shoot theatre shots, concert shots and recording studio
shots, but I do use it elsewhere on occasion. Works great. There are
people who complain about its size and weight (which is considerable
compared to other Leica lens) but I find that my M6-TTL with the
135/2.8 has pretty much the same heft and feel as my Nikon F3 with a
35-70/3.5 zoom, so it isn't that much of an ajustment for me. There's
even a tripod socket on the lens which comes in very handy!

Great stuff. I especially love the the first shot (Starry Night). You
should send them a copy (if you haven't already), it would make a
great album cover. By the way, my campsite at FRFF this year was
right across from the double-decker Greyhound bus.
Which tape for "stealth Leica"?

Pick up a sheet of vinyl stick-on numbers. I think either the 1 1/2"
or 2", I can't remember offhand. The oval inside the "8" is perfect
for covering the red logo and a piece of the "1" will cover the name
logo. If you really want to go nuts a piece of the "1" will all cover
the rewind "R".
