  1. Thanks Charles, and of course Cynthia Jean. There are a few of these Vector images in my portfolio. They have all been created in software called Canvas, which is now owned by ACDSEE. I play with it once in a while, never enough to really master such a huge program. It is primarily used in industrial/medical illustration.

Thanks Joe, appreciate the comment, much. I'm with you, the really beautiful scenes like Yosemite are so over shot that I rarely go there. I do love the overcast coastal images which I'm lucky enough to get the opportunity to shoot quite a few of.
  2. Arthur, this is the Suisun Bay near Benicia CA, actually part of SF Bay. It is really hard to get close to the ships. There is a guarded military post in the way. The only real shot of them that I have found is from an observation point on 580 where this was shot from, and it was shot at 300mm. Maybe from a boat.

Very nice series Pnina. The old burned stubble is wonderful for leading the viewer into the subject. All of them are well composed and good lighting in a difficult situation. Well seen.
  3. Pnina and Fred, thanks for the comments. Much appreciated.

Fred, this is actually a street shot. Santa Cruz has quite a number of these characters that show up downtown, especially in the off tourist season. This is a color shot but it has not been converted to b&w. I removed the background and used a black to white gradient to isolate him. He actually plays the accordion through the covering, working for tips.

This photo probably comes close to capturing true bird phsyche better than any I have seen in a long time. It has much more going for it than the pretty picture nature photo we all see so many of.

Yes, the image has technical flaws, but the intenseness of the expression on the gull is the photo. The photo need not be anything else. It is powerful. It is bird.

  4. These Saguaro Blooms are beautiful Gerry. All in this section of your portfolio are very well done, this is my favorite. Almost like hands with an offering to the Gods. Well done and sensitive works.

    No Way Out

Thanks Pnina. And, thanks for bringing the title to my attention. Can not figure why I did that. The actual title of the piece is "No Way Out", as represented by the knobless and keyless door hardware and the missing steps leading out of the image, down from the pedestal. It is one of my favorite pieces.

Thank you Art and Janusz. Appreciate the comments and ratings.

Hi Katherine. I don't know what type of software you have, but to do really good vector images you need really good software with innovative capabilities. I think there are some really good 3D programs out there, however I have never worked in them. I'm sure that Adobe Illustrator is great, but I have not worked with it. Canvas, in which this image was created, is highly regarded in many industrial design fields, is kind of like having Photoshop, Illustrator, a web design and professional publishing software (plus) all wrapped up into one package. Needless to say, a very steep learning curve.

I like to work sometimes by starting with a blank screen so to speak. No pre-conceived idea about an image at all. Just let something materialize by playing with shapes and the software's capabilities. This is what happened with this image. Another good example of this would be my "Full Speed Ahead" image in my portfolio http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=5636522 that was done in Photoshop. It started with a photo of a piece of colored glass that I just started manipulating with the Liquify Tool. The shape of the dolphin emerged and from there the rest of the image just fell into place.

I hope this rather vague answer helps.
