  1. I have gotten to the point where I seriously do not care. Bob, please delete this thread. thanks for those of you who were actually helpful as for the rest of you get a life, maybe if it bothers you so then offer the maintainer your services to go through and correct all the spelling on the forum, or just get a freaking life. There are a few other places to get the information I may need. Not here, this is sickening.
  2. Hey John, I really could not give a rats ass about what you think of others spelling. Mine in in particular. First, I do not use a spell checker period! in when writing a serious peice I do not even wait t=until the end to check spelling I correct paragraph by paragragp or aftre an idea has been placed in writing and can go back after the flow and make sure the spelling and grammar is correct. In fact I have always had a stronger grasp on the English language than many grads I know who hold Master's degrees.

That said I turned to writing instead of journalism as my ethics are too high to go prying into other lives and asking questions I would not appreciate others asking of me. That is what makes me a bad reporter not an inability to write. Instead I write columns and magazine style entries now based off obsevation, research, and experience. If you don't like it don't read it. Better yet, keep it to yourself as a troll, and so far your contribution is completely unwarranted and senseless. Again, this is a post on photo forum not a Master's Thesis

Thanks to the other posters who chose to write something constructive, and helpful. From what I am gathering this lens should give me what my old Kodak Anistigmat deleivered which actaully was pretty good for an uncoated lens. This particular lens looks to be sitting in a newer shutter and the price war started at the end telling me that somebody else wanted it too. I take that as a good sign. For me the big thing is to be able to use the camera for now. I have a 210mm barrel lens that just needs a large shutter. If I decide I do not like the effects of the longer focal length I can find a shutter for the Meier Gorlitz. But that is also part of the fun of using older camears, trying different lenses to see what they do.

Thanks, to those who actually contributed. To everyone else I bet it makes you feel like big men to smart off to someone you can't look directly in the face. Lets me know quite a bit about your character.

  3. I have heard some peopel say good and ohters say bad. I bought a

Shnieder Linhoff Symmar in a Linhoff-Compur shutter on ebay. I went

ahead and went forthis one because I know the Shneider lens and no

the glass to be great glass. I have heard that some are not as

contrasty and sharp as other lenses but like I said I went wit hab it

of experience knowing the Shnieder name to be a good name. Anyone

    know any more about these?

Incidenatally I am putting it on a Newton NewVue I was able to find

in the classifieds here. IOW I was able to get a camear exactly like

the one I had for the same amount I sold my other one for. I can

definetly live with that. I know these to be sturdy and make great

    feild cameras.

    Thanks,

    Daniel

  4. Well I sold mine not because of a flare problem but because it's sale alone paid for 3/4 of my killer Bronica ETRS setup and I'm telling you a decked my ETRS out!I NEVER had lens flare in mine. You pointed out the elemnets are big and theres a lot of them. Use your lenshoods at all times. The only lens I do not use a hood with is my50 as the element is recessed so deep.

Having said that I will say that I am going to replace the 70-200 2.8 with a 100mm Macro and a 200mm 2.8L Not for a flare probelm but I got sick of getting stopped by peopel who were in awe of "the lens" and assuming it would magnify the moon like a telescope. Also for the weight and for the need of a tripod anyway I figured that for all that care I might as well put it on a negative that will produce more resoltuion. Even with my primes I use lens hoods.

  5. Yes the read the manual Everything you say seems to point to the fact that the camear settings are not set for what you are trying to acheive. As for the improper exposreus be sure to lock out your QCD on the back you can accidenatlly change your Exposure compensation if you are not careful. I keep mine locked out in my 1N. Well not true, I USEDto keep it locked out. Now I just shoot in manual all the time so it becaomes my aperture control.
  6. Oh Dave I was making a refence to an earlier comment made in this thread about it being clear that Tamron was dropping the Bronica line. I went to check the websites press releases and found nothing. I completely agree with not caring what others shoot with just whatever works for you. In fact I prefer to do things a bit different than others do anyway. I also do not see how one could list a few cameras with non removeable backs as a camear for someone to shoot in a fast paced situation. Unless you feel like handing offthe entire camera, lens and all over to the assistant to reload, such as the Pentax which was listed in an earlier thread. To be honest For a camear that sells for as much as the Bronica new the Pentax really does not offer much if you consider the fact you are stuck wit hthe finder, and whatever film is loaded if the light changes.
  7. Well as oppossed to searching threads the best thing to do is to go to the Tamron site and see what they have in the press releases. Well it is not clear that Tamron is shutting the Bronica line down. I say that it is not clear as there is not a press release stating this so could somebody send info confirming this?
  8. Well Dave thatertainly makes since. I have not heard that Bronica was being dropped but I'll have to go through and double check the thread but there was a post staing that Tamron was going to contiunue the Bronica line posted recently. In fact Aside from Mamiya Bronica was a more common name for me than Hassey of Rolly so. I'll go double check the sites befroe confirming or denying they are dropping Bronica.
  9. I have held Hasseys Rollies Maiyas and Bronicas. In fact I have done quite a bit of work with an RB67 and my ETRS. The Bronnies are very well built and tough camears. AND CHEAPER than the others. The images I get with mine are very sharp and contrasty and thats with the hated MC lenses that every body seems to think suck. I am compaing the image quality to that of my old 70-200 2.8L EOS lens which is hands down one of the best lenses I have ever seen for image quality. Do yuorself a favor and save soem money and buy Bronica. It'll do eveything the others do even if it still looks a bit old. Brian mentioned that he wants to hook up to lights but he never said specifically he is shooting fashion.

These comparisons are starting to reemind me of Canon vs Nikon arguments.

  10. Funny, most of the Professional shooters around here are i=either using Mamiya RB67s or Bronicas. I think I would be more inclined to take my $600 Bronica into the bush and rap off a a few rolls of chromes in the wild before I would want to take a multi thousand doolar HAssey or Caontax. If I had my druthers it would be a Contax but I don't have that kind of dough. I have seen them and they feel pretty sturdy and give great image quality, but they cost thousands. I just took my Bronny on a logjam and shot plenty of chromes at a wtarefall with a fisherman in the low left. I don't know if I would have been as inclined to pack a big expensive rig to the same place. Get the best camear your pocket book and wife will allow. I also own one of the best autofocus cxameras made in the 1N and in MF I don't feel its all that necassry.
  11. Bronica is a very wise choice. I just bought a Bronica ETRS with AEII finder and 75mmlens, two backs, speed grip and a nice bag for $535. I have since added a 50mm and 150mm lens a rotary and waist level finder with other stuff. The lenses and other accessories are very inexpensive, and I prefer carrying it over my EOS 1N in the feld. The image quality is easily better than my EOS L glass. You can pick up a body, AE finder and speedgrip for around $500 including the 75mm lens and back in that price.

I consider mine a capable enough camera that my 35mm is now an afterthought to pursue after I get my large foramt. Later on a I will replace the long L glass I sold to get my Bronica, but for now the MF does all Ineed it too for a very nice price. The leafshutter lenses sync at any speed which is nice for fill flash, and the speedgrip gives you such a grip as to knwo the camera will not slip from your hands as your navigating logjams to get that perfect shot.

  12. Yes I bought into the Bronica because of its leafshutter lenses and durable build. Also because the system is completely modular allowing me to customize the camear to my needs. The interchangeable backs, different finders and extension tubes and grips make the camear much more than a Pentax or the Mamiyas built in the time of the ETRS. But much more than anything as compared to other 645 cameras they have interchangeable backs. Another reason I bought inot Bronica over Pentax or Mamiya. Alot of people were complaining in that old thread that Bronica was not being innovative and improving the line-up. I feel it doesn't need improvement. What, change the body so it looks liek a spaceship? Add autofocus so the people who buy them can no longer afford them? I bought it for the very high quality glass and great handiling at a very affordable price.

I know the Mamiya Pro has interchangeable backs but hte used price is twice that of Bronica too. The PEntax does not have optional backs or finders, it does have a hell of a lens line-up but I am happy with my 50, 75, and 150.

As for the Digi backs The article only lists the names of the companies, Phase-One and MegaVision. I suppose you could do a search and find them. I have not had a chance yet as I am cramming for midterms right now. I read the magazine for a break!

  13. I was reading a comparison of Contax, Bronica, Hasselblad and Mamiya

645 cameras in The June 2003 Issue of Popular Photography as the

similarity of these 4 is their digital readiness. I wanted to write

this for the FYI for those getting in to MF as I ran across a thread

in my research that stated Bronica did not have digital ability. I

ran across it while researching the cameras before I bought one.

It was just something I read and let go by paying not much attention

but some of the arguments against Bronica in the thread were that

they have no autofocus are still using leaf shutter lenses so the top

shutter speed is 1/500 and there was not a digital option for Bronica

camears. Yes no auto focus, and top speed is 1/500 but thats what ND

filters are for. But apparently MegaVision and Phase-One make

didgital backs for the ETRSi and the SQAi at 7,000x7,000 pixels and

image files up to 144MB. So for anyone wanting to convert your Bronny

to digi tool you have an option!

As for me I am glad of no autofocus, and leaf shutter lenses. These

things are constructed like little tamks and with a speed grip they

are very well balanced. I liek carrying my ETRS through the woods and

over rock and stuff way more than my 1N. The pistol-like feel of the

grip allows for a very solid grip and the build makes for a very

hearty little camear. And since the build is so simple and lenses are

so cheap(compared tot other MFs) they are the perfect wilderness

cameras! Now if I luck out and win my Viewcamera I'll be set for the

    summer, I can't wait!

  14. I myself am getting a monorail this time around and intend on using it for feild work. Why? I want all the movements. I had a Newton dualrail that was considered a feild camear by everyone who saw it but it did not fold up so I had the same portability as a flatbed with some of the advantages of a monorail minus the rise of the rear standard, although the rear did tilt and swing. I intend on buying a nice and solid monorail and am looking at an Omega having loved the durability and craftsmanship of my Omega enlarger.

As for transportability, I will end up carrying it in a bag with stiffened sides that can be slung on my shoulder or after it gets here may try and modify my LowePro back pack to accommodate it. I can also get help from my wife in carrying so that can aid in the solution too. We do everything together which kind of reminds me of Christopher Burkette whose wife goes out with him in the feild when they feild work. christpher Burkette takes an 8x10 into the feild so....

I would also haver to recommend ebay. I get most of my gear there anymore. I am bidding on my amera right now and looking at the rest of the gear such as film holders lenses and such. A lot cheaper than going through B&H and Adorama.

  15. thats funny, my manfrotto 190 N and 3028 Manfrotto Ball head are more than stable and adequate. I currently use it for my MF gear and it will be supporting my view camera soon. Damn stable tripod have you tried adjusting yours?
  16. At the present time I do not consider digital cutting edge. The EOS 1V is cutting edge, the 1DS can rival film in 35mm foramt but is still way to inefficient to make it worth my while yet. I won't denounce digi but for now it is too power hungry and requires too much storage. If I were shooting for the paper or Time Life maybe. But I do not. In saying that even the CANON 10D is still not good enough as I can see the noise, among other factors that make an image scream digital. I am curious just how efficient they can make it though. I had considered going digital then decided to go the other way. I sold most of my EOS gear and bought a Bronica ETRS system for the bulk of my work. It is this move which has brought me back to Large Format too. All the work I go through to make an image what it is pays off in the biigger foramts in the amount of detail is captured. That said, when I do need to go digital I have already bought into the digi system I want anyway. Sorry to all the Nikon guys out there I don't mean to start a war, but I love my EOS glass, and I know they will keep the full frame digis. Until then, I will use my film and take advantage of that quality to try and keep an edge.
  17. I am well aware of the costs of large format phtogrpahy. Hence the selling of my Newton last year to pursue more 35mm gear. Since then I ahve come to the realization that my injuries are such as to rule out photojournalism and other forms of telephoto phtorpahy where 35mm shines in favor of slower more claculated forms of the craft.

I have all I need except the camera itself having kept my film holders and such I just sold the camera and the lens it had on it. the third listing of my 210mm lens shows it will not sell for what I expect to get out of it and so I will keep it. Now at this point there is actually a need for the photogrpahy that I am doing for large format and a void it will fill nicely. To be honest I am finding MF and LF photography to be cheaper than 35mm. In order to eek all you can out of such a small negative requires expensive glass and for all that money it is still being transmittd to a very small and limited negative.

I am in no position to jockey for the shot of a lifetime at the race track or in a warzone and have turned instead to that which surrounds us in our world and environment. Either natural or man-made theses things are better recorded on larger negatives and to be honest my move to MF has been libertaing to the point that I feel 4x5 will definetly be a benifit. This is why I am considering it now. I am half tempted to go make an offer to a local shop that has twin of thecamera I sold if I cannot gt the Omega view I am looking at.

  18. I couldn't find a more appropriate place so I just made a selection

    to post.

I am watching the prices of large foramt camears dropp to even less

than MF systems. I just crossed to MF from 35mm so I could slow down,

smell the film and shoot. I had a 4x5 last year but sold it as at the

time the lenses and other stuff was hard to find used and still very

expensive. It would appear the digital era has caused sveral users to

convert this is the only way I can rationalize the insane price

drops. even in a bad economy people will buy things if they want

    them.

I ask/say this because I am going to get another LF and am looking at

an Omegaview 450. First does the back rotate to get vertical shots?

Also the rail looks pretty long when the bellows are are compressed

when the standards are drawn in will this rail obstruct and create a

shadow in a wide angle shot? Otherthan that I like this camear and

the price may be very right at $100 maybe a bit more. Also does

anybody foresee large format film going the way of the dodo? It would

seem a shame. while everyone else lugs around their batteries,

portable harddrives and CF cards to get shots with their magical 10Ds

I would prefer to trap loads of detail on very large negative

surfaces. In fact I would prefer that others do this. Because the

editors will be able to see a noted difference in image quality when

viewing our chromes on a light table versus a file on a monitor.

I ask the latter because I am still kicking myself in a** for selling

my dual rail Newton NueView, it would have made the perfect feild

camera. This Omega looks sturdy enough to make a good feild camear

and double as a studio camear.(I am in no condition to lug a camera

on my back in the mountains....I make my wife do that! But for as

sturdy as the Newton was it still wasn't a collabsible camear so the

Omega would work as well for what I used it for.

I figure that I better get back into now before sonething happens to

make the prices go up so high that I cannot afford to get into it.

After a short gear head phase I am now concentrating fully on the

image in cameras that are not as easy and truoble free to operate as

automatic/autfocus pro 35mm cameras. It is liberating, and I want to

be sure I can still enjoy life under the cloth later on too.

  19. Ohhh!!!I have mine set at 1/3 to 2. The way have that set is pretty stupid if ask me. I like the way Cnon does it and gives you +1/3 or -1/3 what was Bonica thinking with this 1/2...1...2 crap? I generally let my bells go off when I meter the scene and know what I should have according to the ISO I am using and the amout of light in a familiar scene and I know what I should be getting. If thesettings do not coincide with what I know to be normal for the situation I get out a meter I know I can depend on. In most cases I use my Canon camears as my gauge. They are always dead nuts on the money. In fact I will set my handhelds to my 1N, before it was my T90. Because I know from the chromes I get these meters do not lie.

I just got my 1N back from Canon. Man am I glad to have it back. It is such a smooth camera and deadly accurate. Mine looks liek its had lots of love and it has. I was going to sell it and keep my Elan 7...I am glad the wife demanded I keep the 1N over the Elan. I was going to keep the elan because its light weight for her. She had a cyst on her wrist and ever since she cannot hold heavy items. She told me she would rather get used to the weight of the 1N/booster than sacrifice it for a lesser camera.

Now I am looking to get another large format. the Bronica is a blast, and I am glad for the switch of the Bronica as my main camera, But the LF will be great for soem of the scenics I want to do, and the bronica my serious production camera and the 1N for those places where 35mm and Canon in particular shines over all. That would be long lenses. I care not to get a 500mm for my Bronica. F8 is not worth it for that. I can spend less and get better working light. So in the case of telephoto work in the extremes 35mm and Canon in particualr have the edge. Landscapes, and portraits I feel Medium Format and Large Format hold it. And in all this, a good light meter is a must!

  20. Microtek 120TF? What does that run. I am trying to get a bid in on a scanner but if I lose I need to find some way of getting my 120 shots scanned. Admittedly I am pretty picky. But most imortant I need to digitize for advertisment purposes. I can always mail a slide to amn editor who wants to print the image, but they can't like it unless they can view it!
  21. I have found the Minolta M spot meter that arrived last Friday to be a very pleasing addition to my Bronica. I prefer to be able to meter specifics in my scene as compared to simply averaging the light available in my scene anyway. IOW I prefer to meter for my subject. The Minolta has a avreaging function to average between two points but I found that simply basing an exposure value between what I visually se between the two readings work just as esay and I can bias towrds a highlight or shadow if need be.

The AEII finder is really a joke if you ask me. Yes the meter is accurate but there is no exposure lock so metering then recomposing is kind of a nightmare. You meter, then set to manual then recompose using the original values. Just keep it manual and use the spot meter and I am fine. Therefore I concluded that the AEII is unnecassary for my puorposes. My Rotary arrived yesterday and has replced the metered prism, and my Waist level should be here soon. With tthis set up I am very happy, and find it medicinal to be able to meter my scene set my camera then make my shot. A lot more thought goes into every shot making it more my own.

I would like ot eventually get an ETRSi with an AEIII prism for when I need to shhot and go, but that is more for when I might need TTL flash than anything elses. First I am getting a Large Format. I shouldn't have sold mine last year as that old Newton Dual Rail made the perfect feild camear. I know where another is and am going to try and get it. It feels great to get back to basics. Who cares what new badass lens Canon or Nikon puts out, I can get just as good with this set up. Feels good to finally put the blessfully short gear head phase behind me and refocus on photography.
