I had a picture in my mind of what I wanted this photo to look like -

while it didn't come out quite as I envisioned, I think it came out

more -original- than I had envisioned. I'd like to take more photos

like this when spring/summer come back around, so any advice on what

I can do to improve would be great. Thanks!

  1. Actually, I probably used a low-tech way to add the colors - I used the magnetic lasso tool to select the areas to be colored, went to Image -> Adjust -> Hue/Saturation and clicked "Colorize" and played with the controls to get the desired effect. I know there are other ways to do it, but this worked for me!

    Highway 1 Tree

To me, the tree's branches extending so close to the right side is a

flaw, along with the blurry foreground. But, I am my own worst

critic, so other thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

I could go either way on the sky - if I burned it in longer, there'd be a more uniform cloud cover apparent over the boat that probably wouldn't be so distracting. The day was overcast, but over the mountains in the background were big, dark puffy clouds. I'm planning on hitting the darkroom tonight, so I'll play around with it and see what happens! Thanks for the critique.

Wow, I didn't expect any ratings or comments on this photo at all.

This print did take a long time to get almost right - I'm still not completely happy with it, but sooner or later I'll get it to look like I want. The problem is the sky is severely overexposed compared to the boat - at f/11 the boat takes 10 secs, the mountains 20 seconds, and the sky burns in at about 35 - 40 seconds. This print came out of testing my burning/dodging techniques.

I'm glad at least some people like it though, very encouraging. Thanks again.

  2. Who's to say that whoever was holding the food actually let it go?

Anyway, I think it's a great shot, but agree that more hand/less rock would've made it an excellent shot. Good job, keep goin'!
