I have had my M7 for 4 months and have left it in auto without exception. However I
do from time to time use the exposure lock feature to hold a reading that I consider
to be more
appropriate for the effect I am trying to achieve, rather than blindly using it as a P &
S. In the months I have had the camera I have put 25 or so rolls of C41 and E6 film
through it and 99% of the exposures have been spot on.

Trying to locate the edition it was in - probably in one of my piles of stuff! Will post
over the w/e. BTW, there is also the Canon i6500 in the frame now. I think it's a four-
ink machine but the sample prints I got from Canon looked fine. Choices, choices! I
posted questions on kit selection earlier in the year. The replies were interesting but
so divergent that I ended up going with what felt right! No regrets so far! (And OSX is
wonderful!!)

I think it does depend on what you really need. I went with the i9100 and have been
delighted with its output. It is quick, quiet and on Glossy Pro, which is my preference,
the results are fantastic. I had an Epson 890 previously and the Canon seems to be
delivering better results than that. I reprinted images for which I already had Epson
versions and showed them to friends. Without exception the Canon prints were
preferred. As for logevity, I think it really depends on where
and how you store/display your pictures. I am not printing for posterity - if an image
fades over time I shall just reprint it! "Photogrphy Monthly" here in the UK tested the
220, 1290 (!280 in the US I think) and the i9100. Ironically, the 1290 came out top!
If you choose the Canon you won't be disappointed and the running costs are
significantly lower than the 2200.

I installed an i9100 on my OSX Mac this week. I am delighted with the print quality but found the same frustrations as you Vole. It's irritating but at least it wasn't just me being dumb! As an aside, how long are you finding that your ink lasts? I was only printing A4 but seemed to run low pretty quickly.

Hi Carsten
I got a 1GB Microdrive "bundled" with my G5 here in the UK in July. I'm not shooting RAW as Fine Jpeg is good enough for my family/holiday pictures. I have used the camera extensively since I got it, including in extreme heat in Spain and have had no problems. If it has added to battery drain it is only very minor - battery life seems very good.
Buy and use with confidence!

If you can venture a little bit outside London then do try Wey Cameras in Weybridge Surrey. (Easy 30 minute train ride from Waterloo Station)
I have bought Hassleblad and Leica stuff from them. (Bought an M7 and Tri-Elmar yesterday, as it happens)
The owner, Stephen, and his two sales guys, Carl and Sean, are friendly, knowledgable and patient. I haven't needed any after sales service as yet but have every confidence that it will be very good if I need it.

Hi Aaron. If you're worrried about "investing" in obsolence get a Leica M and a Minolta
5400 scanner. Leica change their M series machines once in a blue moon, the lenses
are peerless and replacing a £500 scanner will hurt a lot less than wondering about
what Canon will announce next. I say this as the owner of 10D, a G5, a Leica R9 and
Hasselblad 503CW. Although I love the technolgy that canon deploys my German
lenses are still head and shoulders above the Japanese zooms I use on the Canon.
In the end, it's the pictures that matter, not the vehicle you used to capture them!
Cheers

Wait! Get a G5. I just did, to supplement a 10D when lugging it and the associated
lenses etc is too much like hard work. First images look great. Size very similar to
5050 but seems like a really well built machine.
happy snaps!

I agree with Thomas. A Rollei66 projecting a 6x6 slide is amazing. Definitely worth the effort. The 66 is a big, old fashioned machine, with a tendency to get through bulbs, but seeing the projected images makes it worth the minor hassles! It has helped my wife to appreciate the cost and to her mind "fiddle" of making images with my 503CW.

Maybe the 2200 (which for some reason is a 2100 here in the UK!) has better OSX compatibility.I wasn't intending to contradict you. I only have an 890 at the moment. There may well be operator error on my part but I can't figure out how to get the result I seek! In making the move to an A3 printer which the output from a Canon10D deserves I want to make a choice that will work well with my Mac as well as giving me excellent results. Since I have no pretensions about my images being worthy of long term display I suspect I could trade of image longevity for ease of use.
No offence intended!

I'm with you on this having just bought a new G4. My Epson 890 is not working as it did under my previous Win98 PC. If Canon have got true OSX functionality they will get my cash. The Epson UK website has some disclaimers about Mac compatibility which imply that their drivers are missing some functionality because of the way OSX works. It's very irritating not to be able to do borderless printing now or even to centre a 10x8 onto a sheet of A4!
Let us know what you decide.

FWIW I have heard from a source within the retail trade here in the UK that the next Digital EOS will be a 3MP device priced to get existing EOS users at the consumer end of the market to move to digital.Out this summer he thinks. Seems odd to me - would that market not now be dabbling in 4+MP compacts like the G3?
By the way, I took delivery of my 17-40f4L yesterday - first impressions very positive, though it's big! 77mm front thread. Decent wide angle view through 10D finder!

Good point Jack. I do have PS7 running on my current Win98 machine. Other than that and the Office suite and a browser I don't use the PC for much else. I have a nagging worry about driver compatibility but I guess Epson are pretty OS X friendly. Although I love the look of OS X and the style of the Mac products I struggle to justify the huge price differential. I guess Mr Gates will be holding me hostage a while longer!
Thanks again to everyone - this has been a really helpful thread.

Wow! Thanks to all for the responses - the passionate, the biassed and the coolly analytical!I didn't mean to start a flame war.
I'm in the UK so the price differentials are even more marked. A highend G4 from the Apple Store with the stuff I would want is about£4.75k. A P4 3.06 mHz system, configured similarly seems to be about £1.2k less (£1=$1.55 give or take).
I've been in IT sales myself since 1978 but don't have the tech skills to build my own PC. If I get a PC I will be wrestling for mouse control with my younger game player son - if I get the Mac the older one will doubtless want to "borrow" it for his music projects. Maybe Linux is the way to go.....!
I'll post when I've purchased and the cognitive dissonance has set in!

Thanks to everyone for the swift responses. Maybe I need to revisit the plan! I had read that Photoshop in particular benefits from the dual processors. Don't want to squander my money however...I was a Macist from the late 80's (before which I had an AppleIIGS) until my other son took the Powermac over for his Music Technology degree 4 years ago.
I'm disappointed to hear about the OS X experiences - I was hoping that it would be streets ahead of any of Mr Gates' offerings. Oh well!

As I am always vying with my teenage son for time on our Athlon900
PC (Warcraft over the net anyone?) I have decided to get my own system
mainly for photographic use. I am thinking of a dual processor G4 with
2GB of RAM and Apple Flatscreen (20")to support my Photoshop 7
endeavours.I also use a Minolta Dual Scan III via USB on the PC right
now.
Has anyone else taken the Mac plunge lately and what pitfalls might be
waiting for me? Sorry if this has been covered before - my archive
search hasn't thrown up anything particularly helpful.
Thanks

My local UK independent retailer (Alton Photographic) were surprised to get a 10D for me almost by return. Am collecting it later today - with 28 - 135 IS. Warehouse Express are quoting 1299 UK Pounds for it (against RSP of 1499) and claim it is in stock.

Thank you Oliver. I'll contact them at once.

Could anyone point me towards a UK source for an adaptor which will
let
me mount my Leica R lenses on an EOS?
Many thanks

My first post to the forum after months lurking! I have taken the plunge and entered the apparently tiny club of R9 owners. Delighted with it. My UK dealer told me that local Leica reps have indicated that there is a digital back coming. They think it will be a slim back with a cord attachment to a power source/storage module to be carried in a pocket. This will help to keep the R9 size proportions.
I also puchased a pair of the new 10&15x50 binos - wonderful!)
I have enjoyed watching the forum. Wonderful standard of pictures posted - thank you.

A gentleman at the UK Rollei distributors, Prisma, told me this morning that they are expecting first shipments of the camera, the 60-140 and the 180 in September.

I spoke with a gentleman at Prisma (the UK distributor)this morning. He expects availability in September, with the new zoom and the 180. Seems reasonable to assume that this will be the worldwide timescale.

Canon i9100 vs. Epson 2200

I have a 9100 attached to a G4 Mac running OS10.2.8. The only issue I am struggling with is very visible banding on my prints. I am using Canon Pro Photo paper. I have cleaned the heads etc but still I am sorely disappointed with the results. They look ok from a distance but up close the banding is very obvious. However, it is very quick!!
Unless I can sort this out I may have to swallow the loss and switch to Epson.
